I live in LA, and we actually had a super cool oppurtunity. With some friends from band, we got to go be part of the studio audience for America's Funniest Home Videos, and it was nothing like this. It was like 3ish hours on set, and they didn't really have the bad comedian. The guy leading us also expained what they were doing, like if we needed to do bumper shots, or backup laugh tracks and whatnot. It was actually enjoyable, compared to what Ted's experience sounds like (also it's much easier to laugh at videos of people running into doors).
Yeah as I said, not everyone live studio audience experience is going to be like this

I was legit thinking about this the other day. I realised that if there actually are live studio audiences that they have to sit through every take and listen to the same jokes over and over every time the actors fumble their lines or a producer farts to loud. It sounded horrible in my mind and turns out I was right

I was once an audience member for Australian Ninja Warrior. The filming took nine hours, and we were seated by the last obstacle which would be great except barely any contestants make it that far. We spent most of the night cheering at an empty obstacle course on a freezing winter night. Hou also weren't allowed to bring any food or drinks in, and no phones were allowed.
The only fun part was that the director would ask you to pretend to be family members or friends for contestants who didn't have any family or friends at the filming. I hope all my athletic fake siblings are doing well
In the sixties I had a very similar experience. It was surreal. Until now, I never wondered why the word didn't spread that participating in a live studio audience was like a bad trip.

Ive had some great studio audience experiences, but my worst one was for a show called "funny you should ask." It's basically Hollywood Squares but without the tic-tac-toe game. Not sure how much the similarities come through on the show, but it feels very obvious when they have to stop the show every few minutes to remind the contestants not to say "i agree" and "i disagree"
Man I could listen to Ted talk for hours, I sure wish he had a podcast, maybe even with some of his friends, like Slimecicle or Jschlatt for example

I went to a live, "Noon-time Variety Show" for my sister's 18th birthday. The show was one of my country's multiple noon-time shows (before the series of telenovelas that followed afterwards) that entertains viewers with multiple different gameshows and dance choreographies hosted by the nation's most famous actors, singers, and comedians contracted under the channel company.
During setup, they did some "cheering up" entertainment to get the people pumped for the event, which sometimes get interrupted with the hosts practicing for the live feed. Then, they'll prepare us for the opening theme with a few people being selected to star on camera while the rest of us practice for the mojo of the intro. Hell, the Director himself played around while preparing for the intro. After that, it's showtime! (wink, wink).
In the midst of the ad-breaks, we get to see the film crew move sets all over the studio. Sometimes they ask the audience to help out a bit when moving set props. Once back on air, the hosts monitor the movements and stories of each contestant or guest star, so they can find a perfectly good time to do improv and entertain the audience. Their skills were so good that they barely fail whenever they executed an improvised skit. Even nature played a part, as a cat was able to randomly wander into the studio during a performance, which completely shocked everyone, even the film crew, and the hosts went along and died laughing on stage seeing it as a random moment that shouldn't have happened due to the studio's multiple security entrances.
I was never really interested in going to the studio myself, as I don't usually like being filmed (the camera pans to the audiences sometimes). However, after seeing the entire production and all the weird and wacky stuff that happened behind the scenes, I honestly was surprised on how I was able to enjoy myself entirely. It really sucks to hear your experience of a live show though, it felt like the film crew was embarrassed by their imperfections that they decided to just cover it all up and make sure they get the reaction they wanted.
