As someone who’s been in a two person cult, I really worry about the daughter. Just seems like the mother is really being degrading and probably is much more abusive behind the scenes. I’ve been in those shoes and it is a horrible experience.

@@cosmosisrose well, it was an abusive relationship, but the reason I call it a two person cult is because it wasn’t just our relationship that was toxic. It was all based around a belief system/religion in which the other person was a higher authority. I was the follower and I had to believe and follow what they said about God. If not I was treated awful and had horrible things told me to. The other person took what certain people of faith were saying and twisted it to their own narrative to get control over me. Does that make sense?

If I had grown up with a mom who told me that there was a landline to an angel and the wire reached out of my fucking back and then I was on mushrooms, I can definitely see that as my reaction. Especially the way the mom has these realizations and the daughter has a completely different one but thinks she's on the same page. Creating profound ideas out of a misunderstood exchange has often been my experience. These things might have never happened to you but I don't think you can say someone's full of shit because you didn't have a similar experience. These ARE things that DO happen to people on mushrooms, whether you've personally experienced them or not.

That's exactly what I was thinking. What a sacrifice. I also think it seems like the mother has convinced the daughter that she is worthless, ignorant, and stupid, and can't live without her. The reality is that the mother would be lost without a disciple to validate her, and to have power over. A cult leader is not a cult leader without followers. I look forward to hearing that the daughter has broken free of her mother's control, and is reclaiming her thoughts, beliefs, and life in general as her own.

The way the mom says “our son” and then “knew his mother [could speak to the dead]”, she talks as though she is not the mother herself, even though that’s clearly the context of what she’s saying? The daughter clarifying that Lynn is her mother and they were talking about her brother was actually necessary for me to comprehend what Lynn was even saying. It makes me think that Lynn’s consciousness no longer recognizes/associates with her relationships and probably even her life on the whole. Maybe some sort of dissociative state/disorder?
