I bought these tablets for some fun at Christmas a few years ago, along with a load of fruit. Lemon's taste more like an Orange and something as sweet as a Strawberry tastes like cake, and I mean it, it takes like a chunk of cake it's so sweet (but still with strawberry flavor. The conspiracy theory Ben mentions might actually be true. About the same time there were two competing theories about what was making people obese. Ancel Keys identified dietary fat, John Yudkin identified sugar. The sugar industry threw its weight (no pun intended) behind Keys and Yudkin was discredited. And this the fat-free food craze was born with sugar replacing fat. And people still got obese.
Belinus That's so interesting. What made things worse was that high fructose corn syrup ended up replacing sugar. And HFC causes 50% more weight gain than cane sugar. It was an independent study done by Princeton University if anyone wanted to know where I got that info from.
@@IrKeNoVa It's not, actually - berries were *very* much a part of our diet way back when. Ketosis is an alternative metabolic state, for when you don't have enough glucose normally to run your brain. It can lead to, in extremes, some serious problems as the body is unable to keep up with the ketone production. So no, it's not the "natural" human diet. Ultimately, what makes you fat is, well... calories in excess of what you burn. Sugar just makes it really easy to have a *lot* of calories, and both fewer satiety signals and less energy consumed to convert food to energy result. A ketogenic diet is certainly doable - and is certainly more viable than a lot of other fad diets - but it's simply that; a diet (usually for short-term weight loss).
People have been getting more and more obese. Take a look at photos from the sixties and seventies, or even old movies like "The Goonies." Chunk was considered fat back then, and now that's what most kids look like. And then look up some of the recipes from back then -- scrambled eggs with one tablespoon (not teaspoon) of butter per egg, and one for the pan.
I realise this is a LOT later, but it would be interesting to see what kind of foods Ben and James could put together that are super healthy, but more or less needs the berry to be edible/tasty.
Haha, I remember playing with those. Eating lemons was good, it turned mandarins into some sort of hypersweet wonder fruit, and a glass of vinegar still had zing, but was like a tasty soda!
