Anyway your Mark Twain quote doesn't actually apply to this situation since his killing move was completely rational. The queen was attacking his knight and bishop at the same time and he had no way to save them both. It makes perfect sense he would take a pawn and check him with the bishop, giving him a move to bring the knight to safety, as that saves one of them and gets him as much material as he could have gotten for the other. The final move should have been completely expected.

It started when they changed the rules so that pawns could move 2 spaces their first move to speed up the start of the game. This had the side effect that an aggressive pawn's threatened square can get skipped, en passant allows you to take the pawn anyway, basically undoing the rule change in this instance to not upset older strategies.

@2:44 If he had done Bishop B4 instead of Bishop F8, then he could have gone Pawn B5, making it so if White captured the bishop, he'd capture the queen

1000 rated chess but every time your opponent moves a piece you must move a piece of that type as well (example : opponent moves bishop you move any of your bishop and you fail if you cant move it)

EDIT - Realised you already did this so 100 rated chess but your pawns can never be on the same file

You were shocked and appalled, and completely didn't see it coming, and thought it was an unexpected and irrational choice, but in fact that was his best available move. You were attacking his bishop and knight at the same time with your queen and he couldn't save them both. So what did he do? He took your pawn with his bishop and checked you, so that he would get a tempo to then move his knight to safety. That is literally what you should have expected him to do. Go ahead, and tell me, WHAT could he have done to save BOTH the knight and the bishop that your queen was attacking? He chose the move that would allow him to save ONE of them, while getting the most valuable material of yours as he could for the other one. Completely rational move. It is entirely your loss in not anticipating it.

Queen to B3. Protects the knight and attacks a hanging rook. Although it is no surprise white didn't see it.

Idk, that rook move might be purely development, but after the bishop exchange starting at 4:10, I have to wonder if the opponent was testing a theory that Simp was using whatever piece (or pawn) they did.

What was Simp's win condition, anyway? The only two ways Simp could've captured a piece in theory was if white moved that piece onto a square controlled by its counterpart or if white blundered a piece for multiple turns. If Simp captured white's pieces, he would've lost the ability to move those pieces. So at best Simp is functionally hoping for a trade. If Simp starts closing in on white's king, his turn economy goes away since Simp would end up moving his own king. Seems to me that the only was Simp was going to win is if white blundered a checkmate in 1 or got intimidated and resigned.
    I guess the theory of it, a paid actor who was aware of the challenge and trying to lose could've played: W: F3, B: E4, W: G4, B: G6, W: C3, B: B6, W: QC2, B: QE2, W: QD1, B: QH4. IE they would've had to modify the Fool's Mate in order to get it to work.
