Why has it taken me this long to come across these great videos!?!? Wow... stoked... you're a bad-ass Rob and this terrific information broken down in a wonderful way!
I love that you realize that "music" is the language that unites us all, and you don't just restrict yourself to "Black" drummers, "Hispanic" drummers, or ANY drummers that play within a particular style. I love "Buddy Rich" "Dave Weckl" "Jeff Porcaro", as musch as I love "Tony Williams" "Nate Smith" "Manu Katche", and "Clyde Stubblefield" and "Chongito".... Keep it up.... I appreciate you, and LOVE what you do. :)
Awesome. I love adding to my vovab. Having spent a good amount of time working on different ways to use my 6 stroke rolls (hands, diffrent timings, and stickingd, between hands and feel etc...) This one came quick for me. Gotta love when practice pays off!
I first learned this lick after watching Gadd on Zildjian Day in New York. Probably 1986 or so. He did it, and so do I, with the left hand doing a cross-stick. Awesome lick!!! Love the "Give me some chicken and a biscuit" analogy... Brilliant!
"Give me some chicken and biscuit" so simple but genius man....the name will help me remember the sticking and the pronunciation will help me remember the rhythm...Thanks for the lick man
Thanks for another awesome lesson and showing this cool Steve Gadd drum lick! I've been working up my Funk grooves a bit more and now I'm going to incorporate this lick as well. Great video with an awesome teaching demo!
I saw Gregg Bissonette run down this lick at a clinic in 1982 when he was just coming up. It was at a small drum shop near Cincy Ohio but it was recorded and I have it on VHS somewhere LOL! Nice breakdown bro spot on! I love this riff cause it can be applied to several music genres. It's no wonder why every producer wanted Gadd!
Thanks Rob,. I enjoyed the way you broke that down & explained the lesson, especially the part about spending time with it, REAL SLOW - To get rid of any bugs :)
Thank you for transcribing this lick. It always was one of my favorite of Gadd, but I never seen anyone show how to play it. I think it’s that lick which Steve uses in Tom Scott “Dirty Old Man”.
not many people showing how to play this lick because not many people can figure out WTF he is doing for it... bonus points to you sir. great explanation i knew it was simple but just couldn't hear it right
Hey where have you been hiding. I like the lick but the way you take your time and do a say and play makes it fun to watch you. Thank you. I'm a fan. Jim from Jersey
Great work, Rob. I, too, am a Gaddaholic. You can also check Steve on his usage of paradiddles btwn sd, hh, and bd across the bar lines. Believe there is evidence of that on his NYC clinic live last year or year before. I'll research the video. - Dennis
Holy shit I can’t believe Nate Morton commented on your vid! Honestly for real Rob you just lay it down about as perfect as Anybody can, and you just give Such great lessons and insight to all the layers of the instrument and groove. My teacher gave me this sheet music for this groove he knew Steve real well from Rochester and Eastman, i’m from Buffalo 40 minutes away got to meet Steve once at a clinic he is like Yoda of the drums
that lick is in the Steve Gadd "Up Close Book" several times, but anyway, this is a cool lesson. And sometimes Steve Gadd plays this lick with a rimclick instead of snare and opened the hihat on the first stroke, sounds also great.
Hey. Just recently subscribed. Been through as many videos as I can of yours. Love the way you really explain to the world how to do shit that we can't without boasting how good you are. This is a fantastic video and I reckon you have made this the easiest way to execute it. Gonna really work with your videos next year 2018. Happy new year Mr beat down 😎
The first time I ever heard Steve play that was on "Dirty Old Man" when the Tom Scott New York Connection album came out in 1974 or 75. They came to Atlanta and played at the Great Southeast Music Hall. I got up from my seat and tried to get a better view of his right hand. His version is a little more aggressive, I think.
Michael B. Porter Nice breakdown, is that the lick from Paul Simons "50 ways to leave your lover" Sounds like it to me and now I know how to play! Thanks Brother.
Michael B. Porter hey man when i started playing drums around my mid teens i was terrible. i thought you had to hit really hard and have big movements in your arms from watching keith moon type drummers. my time was terrible my fills were rushed (i can still hear a rushed fill sometimes in some drummers) i loved playing but i was not a natural as some guys are. for some reason i started practicing with a pad and meteonome and swear by this method today. with the metronome i immediately could hear how i was rushing fills and not being even. my fills weren't "clean". my playing (tho still weak) got better immediately. then over a few years i got to be ok. i never played anything f2f hat amazing but what i played was decent. i didnt totally suck. then as time went on i got better til there were gigs i could say to myself i actually played pretty good and even better then one or two of the other drummers on the same gig. im 56 now. I'm still not so good i st and out at a gig as "wow that drummer" but ive got to a point where i can eeally add to a song and i inderstand how to apply some rudiments to the kit and how to mix feet. n hands , not overplay AND SOMETIMES IM PRETTY GOOD. i hope someday to play in a convincing boham style and play swing jazz pretty good too. and last before i die to come close to playing like those gospel drummers (all hail them). but the very best start to me is learning to play relaxed in time with a metronome. cheers
Gadd uses that lick constantly, a version of it is on 50 ways to leave your lover...Or, when you see him in the drum battle between Weckl, Vinnie C and himself ...:)...He makes it sound so sweet though...:)
Once again, I'm late to the party!! Oh Well, better late than never! Isn't this just a paradiddle-diddle followed by 2 kicks, landing on the down beat at the end? I'm glad you figured it out for me! It is so hard (for me) to figure out detailed parts and sticking by just listening. Great party Rob, thanks for all you do!!!
Why has it taken me this long to come across these great videos!?!? Wow... stoked... you're a bad-ass Rob and this terrific information broken down in a wonderful way!
No, one of my absolute favourite drummers did NOT just drop a comment on my video! 🤯Dude. Thanks sooo much! 😃Wowzers
@@RobBeatdownBrown My fav online drummer meeting his fav drummer. What a thing to stumble upon!

I’m so impressed with Rob’s ability to communicate with us “students “ and to break down complex riffs. Thanks Rob!
My Goodness. I will never forget "Give Me Some Chicken and a Biscuit". I love the way you teach Rob
Terrific contribution to the Gadd fans of the world. Great relaxed teaching style and really clear slower version. Kudos. I subscribed.
Thanks Rob very cool lick, Steve Gadd is the best, good instruction my friend.
Awesome. I love adding to my vovab. Having spent a good amount of time working on different ways to use my 6 stroke rolls (hands, diffrent timings, and stickingd, between hands and feel etc...) This one came quick for me. Gotta love when practice pays off!

Your title of this "Gaddism" was worth the price of admission!!! Hilarious! Thanks for breaking that down!
What a great way to break down a lick. Thanks!
Sir, you are excellent. Both your playing and your explanation are hugely enjoyable. Thank you.
Great lesson. Flutter lick is super cool too!
Rob your pocket is amazing!
"Give me some chicken and biscuit" so simple but genius man....the name will help me remember the sticking and the pronunciation will help me remember the rhythm...Thanks for the lick man

Drum on!!! You are a good guy,... "hey man"!!! :)
Wonderful! Thanks so much.
Thank you so much, finally some one showed this! God bless!
So glad I subscribed to this wonderful channel!!!
Steve Gadd shows this lick in the beginning of "Up Close" (drum video)! But he begins it with two extra LL ghost notes before the first hi-hat accent.
That is some beautiful playing Rob!
Thank you Rob!!
not many people showing how to play this lick because not many people can figure out WTF he is doing for it... bonus points to you sir. great explanation i knew it was simple but just couldn't hear it right
Totally cool Rob! Gives insight into the likely origin of Kieth Carlock's signature para-diddle-diddle lick too.
Best drum teacher on the web! Rob is mad kewl!
Thanks a bunch, man 🙂👊🏽
Gonna be practicing this for the next few weeks , thanks!
Another great Lesson Rob Mate !

Hey where have you been hiding. I like the lick but the way you take your time and do a say and play makes it fun to watch you. Thank you. I'm a fan. Jim from Jersey
Found you by accident and man you have changed my drumming drastically!!!!!
Splendid!
Thanks for sharing that! Love the thinking about it in terms of rhythm as opposed to 16th notes.
Amazing lick Rob ! Thanks a lot for playing it in such a great way ! Reminds me of something Steve was playing with Will Lee !
Very cool!👍
Pretty damn cool. Have to put this tool in my arsenal pronto.
"Give me some chicken and a biscuit" classic- LOL
Gaddism. I love it!

Tune called "dirty old man" by Tom Scott where I think he does just this. Thx Rob!
love it.... kinda sounds like the 50 ways to leave your lover beat. thanx

Q : do you know what a metronome is?
A : A little short guy from the big city.
God bless Y'all.
LOL!
Hey Richard. Glad you liked my joke. I've been telling it for over 30 years. I hope to live long enough it comes full circle.

Gadd uses that lick constantly, a version of it is on 50 ways to leave your lover...Or, when you see him in the drum battle between Weckl, Vinnie C and himself ...:)...He makes it sound so sweet though...:)
