    For those who might be having issues, it's important to note that Hostgator doesn't seem to give the SSL certificate as soon as you add the domain to cpanel, so everyone should wait a few hours if you're adding the domain to cpanel for the first time before installing wordpress and activating the plugin (not sure if the video mentioned this, I can't do videos with audio).
    I installed wordpress and this plugin before I had received the SSL certificate from hostgator, so ran into problems and many more steps it was asking me. So for those who ran into issues, I had to start over, removed the domain and all remnants of it from cpanel (uninstalled wordpress, went to SSL/TSL in cpanel menu and deleted any mentions of the domain under "Private Keys (Key)" and "CERTIFICATES (CRT)"), so started with a clean slate.
    Then re-added the domain, checked in "CERTIFICATES (CRT)" and saw that the domain was not listed in there, so Hostgator hadn't given me the SSL certificate as soon as I added the domain. Waited a few hours then checked under there again and saw it was now listed under there, meaning I was then given the certificate. I then reinstalled wordpess and the plugin and it installed ok this time without prompting for additional steps.
    However, it's still not redirecting properly, even though it's saying in the Really Simple SSL plugin that everything is OK. If I go to the HTTPS version of the site, it says secure, but it's not redicting there when typing in the domain into my browser without HTTPS before. I'm looking into other plugins or ways to force it instead.

    • @hostgatorUS
      @hostgatorUS  Год назад +2

      Excellent commentary! Our server does require a bit of time to apply your free SSL to any newly added domain to the cPanel, usually this happens within an hour or two, if it takes longer than that call us!
      For your https routing issues if Really Simple SSL is showing it as okay just ensure that plugin has been engaged and is actively routing to https and is not just turned on. In any case we have another video which tells you how to force HTTPS redirects within the cPanel which may also help you out.

    Thanks for the video. After installing the Simple SSL plug-in, a Google Font I was using got replaced with a default font and images on the page aren't loading. I use Divi as my theme and I tried clearing the cache, but the images refuses to load (even after re-uploading them) and the font sometimes renders correctly. Not consistently, however.
    EDIT:
    I installed SSL Insecure Content, but didn't seem to fix anything. I noticed the font was being retrieved from an http url, so I reuploaded it and that was fixed. The images have https URLs in WordPress Media library, but it still isn't appearing on the page. I passed Why No Padlock and it says that I have no mixed content.

      An SSL only encrypts user data, and is necessary for selling anything or taking donations on the site. Having one means that browsers will not give the "unsafe site" warning unless there's malware present of some kind.

    • @hostgatorUS

      Chances are there may be some "mixed content" on your site preventing the SSL from working. These are usually images loaded from an insecure link. We like to recommend using www.whynopadlock.com/ to see what's causing the issue with the SSL. If you see any mixed content you would want to correct the URLs of those images/files.
      Our agents would be happy to help you further with this just give us a call at 1866.964.2867 or chat with us at helpchat.hostgator.com

    I get that getting your site to run HTTPS is part of securing the front end of your web site, but doesn't this usually have to work in tandem with a certificate that is installed in the back end or run through a separate service ?

    • @hostgatorUS
      @hostgatorUS  3 года назад +1

      That's right! We install an SSL certificate for all sites hosted with us soon after they're added to the cPanel. So forcing the https finds the valid certificate since you get it for free. We also let our customers install their own certificates if they have them!

    • @hostgatorUS
      @hostgatorUS  4 года назад +2

      Hi Zareh, thanks for reaching out to us, this is Karen. The red triangle page you received happens when your site tries to force it's visitors to use SSL (using https) when the certificate isn't valid or installed yet. It's not usually indicative of anything wrong with the site contents just the certificate.
      Our free SSL installs automatically within 24 hours of the domain being hosted on the server. After that point, feel free to install any SSL plugin you prefer (We recommend Really Simple SSL) and you should be fine!

      @Zareh Missirian, it shouldn't be necessary to delete the site. As long as the domain is pointed to us, the SSL should apply and your plugin operational. If you can, you can come into our chat support to verify that its active.

    I am looking to change our website from http to https, I do get the secure lock when I add the "s" in front of the URL. The website seems to function fine, but the only trouble I see is that one of the slider bars on our home page doesn't process the images so it creates a white block. Do you think this plug in will correct this by making the URL on the images https as well? It looks like it just can't find the images. If all else fails, the web server is virtual so I can take a snap shop and restore from snap shot if needed. I'm just trying to prepare myself for complications.

    • @hostgatorUS
      @hostgatorUS  2 года назад +1

      Hey there, this plugin does perform URL fixes for non-https content as far as we're aware. If not, you can also try the Insecure Content Fixer plugin as well.
      If both of those fail, the next step would be to re-upload those pictures as new uploads would have the https link once your site does.
      Our support should be able to help you out with these as well, you can get in touch by calling 1866.964.2867 or online at helpchat.hostgator.com or message us @HGSupport on Twitter.

    Thanks, Josh. I purchased the Hatchling HostGator plan yesterday, and when WordPress was installed, my permalinks were http. I installed the Really Simple SSL plugin, and they're now HTTPS and I have the padlock. But I'm still receiving SSL warning messages about missing security headers even though I added the following to my .htaccess file in public_html and cleared my cache:
    Header always set Strict-Transport-Security: "max-age=31536000" env=HTTPS
    Header always set Content-Security-Policy "upgrade-insecure-requests"
    Header always set X-Content-Type-Options "nosniff"
    Header always set X-XSS-Protection "1; mode=block"
    Header always set Expect-CT "max-age=7776000, enforce"
    Header always set Referrer-Policy: "no-referrer-when-downgrade"
    Any recommendations for how to resolve the security header warnings?

      If you've installed Really Simple SSL but don't have the Activate button. Try manually activating it from the plugin menu which you can get to from the Plugins icon on the left in your Dashboard. Once there, you can see a list of your plugins and be able to manually activate and deactivate them, try manually activating the SSL plugin and see if that fixes this for you.
      The nameserver issue doesn't make a lot of sense how you described it, we think it would be best if you contacted our support regarding that as it may simply be a misunderstanding as nameservers do take 24-48 hours to propagate.

      @@hostgatorUS I see in my Wordpress general settings that the URL of my website (both Wordpress and site URL) are with "http". Adding https there could solve the problem?

      You bet it could. That may be forcing your website to use HTTP. Change them to just 'domain.com', and see if that does the trick. You could also try going with, 'domain.com' and forgo the plugin, but there are other things the plugin does to help like checking for insecure content etc.
