I saw Mr. Klausz hand cut dovetails in some narrow pine boards once. He was talking to the crowd and just cutting and chiseling away. About 30 seconds later he shows a perfectly cut dovetail corner. I was amazed.
Quite common to find moulding planes of that type witch makes a complete moulding here in sweden. Most are narrower and the usually have no handles but i have at least one about that width lying around
Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece of historical tool and technique. I have no idea how it was made in the past, now I know. Many blessings to you Sir
Frank - please keep contributing some videos. Your approach is inspiring and it's clear that you still have a passion for the materials, tools and skills. And enjoy your retirement.
What talent. I wish I had known you when you had your cabinet shop. I will have to settle for your videos My grandfather was cabinet maker but passed away just before I was born. I remember going down to his shop in the basement where we lived and playing with his tools. God knows how many tools I lost while playing with them. The ones I have I cherish. The playing there led to a life as a master mechanic working on cars.
OK, I am 30 seconds in....... THOSE DOORS! Wow! Man those doors are nice. Inside and outside ones, and the arch.... If I ever go to heaven... it had better look like that. Man.
People had so much pride in quality craftsmanship back in the day that has been replaced by mass production mdf garbage. I live I custom built house on 10 acres from the 1960s that use alot of turn of the century items being discarded from 1900s home being renovated and now I am restoring those items from 120+ years of use and I totally appreciate what went into the crafting of those items by hand.
Great video. Love watching your guests! You have a special channel. For you...spending time with Frank is probably the icing on cake! Thanks for sharing.
shavings are very regular. and the result is simply astonishing. great moulding plane. Working with hand tools is much more satisfying than power tools
+Larché Jacques Clarel Glad you liked it! Yes, hand tools are much more satisfying...except maybe when you've got a couple hundred board feet of wood to mill :)
When the power tools are tuned and are sharp that is! Haha. Otherwise, power tools it is. Most people give up on hand tools because they lack the experience
I bought an old plane from craigslist and used it to square up some boards to laminate together into a tabletop. Planing down and getting that beautiful sound and just the right resistance against your push is an almost religious experience. Amazing. Table turned out nice too. :P
Tim Bruno Tim, did you visit the link to the blog post? It's here: woodandshop.com/frank-klausz-molding-plane It will have links to the other videos & articles. Let me know if you still have trouble.
I am impressed with the work of this man, is incredible! Thank you for showing that it is possible to do high-quality work without the use of modern machines.
Frank, Two things...#1) I can't belief anyone would give you a thumbs down on this video. #2) Many years ago I worked at a furniture mill (in the planning/Molding division). We hand ground knife stock for upper, lower and side cutting heads to produce molding and even round stock. My guess is that you have a template, probably cut into a thin steel plate like cabinet scrapper stock like we did? We would apply steel blue to the knife, and scribe a line along the template onto the knife stock with a carbide scribe, then hand grind the knives on a low speed grinder. My questions is, how do you grind into the steeply pointed valleys of the knife stock? Or do you make you knives a completely different way than we did at the mill? Hi Mark, Frank hasn't responded to me for years, so he won't get this message. But our video on moulding planes shows how to make irons like this. Just go to store.woodandshop.com. thanks for your service!
Wow just so mesmerising amazing 👏, I've just started collecting old wooden planes and bringing them back to life and learning all the time I love it . The video was brilliant thank you very inspiring 👍👌
I had to get a skirting made to match an old piece in a house I installed a dividing wall. It was approx 240mm tall and it cost me $1200 for a 5.4m piece. They had to make the tools to then make the piece and be explained to me they probably made all those mouldings in the house by hand. Now I know how they did it. Thank you sir.
That is some plane and it runs like a dream with Frank Back in the 60's when I was an apprentice joiner, our workshop was near a lot of up market Victorian hotels; the site carpenters would send in a small piece of skirting board and ask for us to make up 200 ft or so and we had to match it up with a variety of wooden moulding planes but we did not have a plane like this. Nor could we because all the mouldings were different. Those were the days Thanks for the video and yes I would like to feel the finished work piece.
Enredando No Garaxe I've got a Moulding plane video coming out with Popular Woodworking Magazine soon, which shows how to sharpen the irons. If you're subscribed, then you'll know when it comes out.
semerhi Thank you very much. I have been trying to take my first steps sharpening an old molding plane using a gauge sharpening stone, but Paul always shows the right way to do things. I hope Wood and shop will have the how to soon, too.
Hollows and rounds. These individual planes along with a rabbet plane and a snipes bill can make any moulding. You'd create a dedicated moulding plane like this for something you need to make frequently.
Aaaw what a beautiful tool and outcome! I envy him for his beautiful and well equipped workshop :) I skip the gym anyway as I love to make and do things without electricity or fuel, like mowing with a scythe and so on.
What a nice man, I could listen to him all day.
Yeah, he sure is

Glad you liked it Allan. Hope you've subscribed for more!
One thing I love about wood is how it not only looks good, but it feels good. I too wish I could feel how smooth and beautiful it is.
Never saw a plan like that before. I survey a lot of old buildings and it really goes to say they don't make em like they used to anymore. Facinated!
Quite common to find moulding planes of that type witch makes a complete moulding here in sweden. Most are narrower and the usually have no handles but i have at least one about that width lying around
Absolutely beautiful... the plane, the work and the presentation. Thank you.

"Make 300 feet of this molding, on the way home, you gonna skip the gym!" Classic! Is there a video of Frank making that monster molding plane?

Imagine, back in the day, if you were the young buck on the crew “sentenced” to planing the molding for a job. Must have been maddening to hit a knot!
Very good job & tool.
Congratulations.
WOW! I have some old molding planes. Wish I had the skill to sharpen the blades.
Enredando No Garaxe I've got a Moulding plane video coming out with Popular Woodworking Magazine soon, which shows how to sharpen the irons. If you're subscribed, then you'll know when it comes out.
Paul Sellers just uploaded a video on this matter. You should check it out.

Wow. That was wonderful, I'm surprised. Greetings from Venezuela
There is a machine that can make this molding. It's called a Frank Klausz.
Jess Neal yes met his brother santa he didn't need a plane, his sleigh could fly
LOL
People are wondering how he made the blade and how he sharpens it and all I'm thinking is: how did he make the bottom of the plane...?
TorSkywalker Most probably hand crafted it!
With another plane, the negative of it.
Router
😂
Hollows and rounds. These individual planes along with a rabbet plane and a snipes bill can make any moulding. You'd create a dedicated moulding plane like this for something you need to make frequently.
Wow that is incredible! You sir could probably throw some mean punches with shoulders doing that kind of work!
Helo mr. Klausz ,the teacher of the perfection
I just want this man to teach me all of his secrets. It would be like learning from my German grandfather.
How Beautiful! thank you for such priceless knowledge.
You're welcome Steve!
