Oh jeah, a had ABSOLUTELY no idea people do that bs. Then i needed a new suit jacket and there where 2 pockets that where closed, i didnt get that when buying. i thought shure they just made an error and closed them up by accident. Until i was stupid enough to cut them open.... 🤣🤦♂
Once a few years ago I had so much trouble finding women's black pants with decent pockets, and also weren't made of lint-magnet fabric, that I got a pair with fabric I liked and took it to a tailor (the kind of place that also does dry cleaning, not a posh dressy one) to get better pockets put in. Sadly I have zero memory of how much I paid and the price has likely gone up since then anyway, but that IS another option.
Fair enough but also worth bearing in mind that most women have always had small pockets and thus would never have had the chance to form that habit in the first place.
@@artyb27 I did. You can still get used to keeping half of your hand in your tiny pocket, though of course it would be nice to have the option of the more comfortable option of full hand in the pocket.
for a woman who is not used to that the pockets for women seem evil for no reason (and I used to wear hoodies all the time then had to stop, breaking the habit was hard and now I just hold my hands behind my back)
for real, now I just want a whole channel of him putting things in his pockets while girls react and slowly lose their minds. "NO! NOOOO!! Not a Nintendo Switch!!! AND THE DOCK??? WHAT THE F***CK?!"
I had a similar conversation at one point where I showed that I could fit a whole nintendo switch in my pocket and it didn't even create a visible outline on the outside.
As a clothing designer, I must tell you that You rock for doing this!!!! It is so true. I have been a Patternmaker and technical designer in the fashion industry for decades. And, it is so true that majority of women’s pants dont have pockets larger than 6” wide x 8” deep( and that is generous) but most of my Designers that I have worked w/dont want the extra bulk that would be added on to the women’s hips : (
Just..... just give me the depth to put my entire slab phone in. 8" is way more than most of my pants. I think my low rise jeans don't go deeper than 4".
Maybe try a new advertisement campaign: pockets, bigger as his D That will get attention and therefore sales. Don't pitch it to the designers but the marketing guys
I have a pair of cargo pants that can fit three 1-liter bottles in. Both front pockets, and one thigh pocket. I got them when I was a teenager. My mom's jeans, *in the early 1990s,* could barely fit her house keys. And women's jeans have only gotten worse since.

My younger sister found a gorgeous dress for her wedding day. And do you know what she was most excited about and kept telling everyone who complimented the dress? "IT HAS POCKETS!!!" She showed off the pockets to every woman at that ceremony. I am sure the men were confused why all the women were so excited on her behalf about something so simple. But why then is something so simple, denied to us. Give us the damn pockets.
My wedding dress also had pockets! It was so nice, I kept my vows and a handkerchief in there. My bridesmaids were all so excited for me when I put them on and went "pockets!!!".
I have a dress and it has MASSIVE hidden pockets (I can fit a small book!). I wear that dress constantly and because the bar has been raised I don't buy my thrifted dresses unless they have pockets. Even my prom dress needed to have pockets.
As a pro seamstress, I freaking love it when beginner sewers realise how much work it takes to make the basics. Love that you caught it on camera and your pants came out so well!! I want a pair
As a child I wrapped a present and the difficulty with aligning everything on a box made me realize clothes with curved surfaces must be much much much more difficult.
@@finkelmanaNot really, since you can buy pants for like 5 bucks and take them for granted everyday, people assume it's easier compared with stuff that pays more. Many tasks in skilled trades that you can make $100 an hour doing are gonna be easier than making a pair of pants you could get for $20, because of industrialization and globalization.
The outlines are the most embarrassing implementation. Like if you're not gonna have pockets at least commit to it. Don't pretend there's something there if there isn't
Your three year old doesn't fill his pockets with cool looking rocks and lizards? This seems like a parenting failure. (Not sure if it's your failure or mine, lol)
@@icarusgaming6269 You would be surprised by how many objects underwent this process in history. In archaeology there is the whole concept of things that lost their function throughout history but their form got retained in some form or another as a kind of ornament on later objects. Up until the point that no one even remembered what function that was originally but everyone just accepted that this ornament should be there out of habit. It's prominently visible in some tools and pottery. Pockets in women's pants are right in the middle of that process right now. They get smaller and smaller and sometimes disappear into a mere ornament without function already. Just because people expect something of that form to be on that place of the pants. Maybe in the future the concept of pockets will be forgotten completely but abstract bow-like ornamants will still be sewn to the upper part of space pants.
The shirt theory: why men take off shirts by pulling them up and over the head from the back, whereas women take of their shirts by crossing arms over the front, grabbing the hem to pull them overhead. (Tbh there's already hypotheses about this on a Tumblr post, but I still would love Sabrina to go down the rabbit hole)
"I chose leather because I'm a working person. I'm using this tool from my book binding phase. This linoleum cut from my stamp making phase. Who said having a million hobbies isn't useful?" That is the moment I fell in love with you.
tbh i think a lot of thrift stores are used to weird customers? lots of people are thrifting to upcycle, resell, make costumes, clothe groups of people by measurements... measuring the pockets alone might be a little odd but probably doesn't look that different from people measuring clothes for fit
things in this video that make me, as a sewist, very happy: - floor sewing TM - bobbin chicken - NO THE TASSELS GONNA BE ON THE WRONG SIDE - books as pattern weights! - the magic of fly zippers - "HOW ARE PEOPLE BUYING PANTS FOR LIKE $10 ON THE INTERNET"
I thought the last comment implied it was just as difficult for a person who had never done it before to make pants as it is for people who make them for a living, which is obviously not the case.
"how are people buying pants on the internet for like $10??? These take so long to make!!" Not only did Sabrina discover sexism in this video, she also discovered the rampant exploitation of workers in the garment industry.
We used to have MULTIPLE garment unions with tens of thousands of workers, but they all dissolved and the workers remaining in the unions were absorbed into the UFCW or UNITE in the 90's. I'm a very young Gen Xer and I remember the commercials they used to play to "Look for the Union Label" in your clothing to support American made fashion.
Well, standardized pants in a factory in asia definitely don't take that long to make. The people making them typically only do a few highly efficient tasks each, which they could do with closed eyes because they have done it thousands of times. No one there does every step of the process. It's not at all different from a factory worker in a car plant in the US or Europe. Parts of the process of making pants has long been fully automated, too.
As a tailor once put it to me: "Men's clothes are designed to fit you, women's clothes are designed for you to fit in them" Pockets with things in them would "ruin" the intended silhouette, therefore they aren't seriously engineered to put things in. It's the dumbest thing in the world.
The silhouette being ruined by real pockets is true though. Alot of Women like that silhouette. I do think they should make both though. I wonder if those loose boyfriend jeans have better pockets.
That's just the God's honest truth though. When I was in high school in the late 2000s, most of the girls in my class had jeans with useable pockets. And they complained about them constantly. "This pocket is bulging through my jeans even though there's nothing in it!" Women to this day do the exact same thing with underwear. The whole "visible panty line" thing. The underwear ruining that silhouette is the whole reason "no show" panties were invented.
FYI: it wasn’t only cycling bloomers that had large pockets, in Victorian times pretty much all skirts had massive pockets like these. There are sewing manuals out there predating the bicycle, that include patterns for these. They were considered essential.
My default winter Leg Clothing is a heavy wool button-up skirt with truly ridiculous pockets. Gored skirts already have the seams so it’s easy to do slit pockets, or have a diagonal opening spanning one gore to the next. Highly recommend.
you’re very right! even formal/event clothing had pockets, some tucked them into the back pleats to both preserve the silhouette and hold all your stuff
The tiny little pocket is actually for a watch. There's actually a line in The Beggar's Opera where a pickpocket curses tailors for making those pockets so narrow and making his job so much harder.
"...my book-binding phase...my stamp-making phase. Who said having a million hobbies isn't useful?" I felt that with my million hobbies and million random tools.
And you could tell Sabrina already had picked up sewing as part of a very useful skill set. The bobbin thing was minor, but there wasn't any outright cussing and swearing at guiding the thread into the machine, nor at the stitch and tensioner settings. Thus hints at already knowing something about the craft.
My eccentric billionaire idea is to have a huge mansion filled with a room for every one of my eccentric hobbies, and a 1:1 scale train set in the back yard.
And economies of scale - ya know, cutting out huge swaths of cloth based on templates and then feeding them into machines which sew along pre-determined stitch lines.
In college, I had a petite gf. I would stand behind her and put my hands in her jeans pockets sometimes. Typically I couldn’t even get my entire fingers in there, much less any of my palm or thumb. Like, they were the perfect size for chapstick.
I do men's exclusively since I like pockets and ever since I was a kid I would tear pants just by looking at them wrong . Was shopping with my sister and found a cute pair and asked the clerk what woman's pants matched my ratio and she was so confused 😅
When my husband is looking for something on his person, basically patting himself down, I call it the "dance of the man with too many pockets". Great video 🥰
It gets even worse in winter, when you have a sweater on with pockets, and then a jacket with pockets on both the inside and the outside. Living the nightmare right now ;-)
I don't usually carry much, so I decided to test out how big the pockets on these casual shorts (that don't even reach my knees) are. Half of the stuff on my desk later, and I've only managed to completely fill one pocket.
I'm writing an undergraduate thesis about this topic and im so grateful for someone else investigating this topic! I've used both The Pudding and the two books mentioned! Thank you for your research and sharing with the community
Oddly enough I've always assumed that it is essentially a fashion choice. When women started wearing tighter fitting clothes putting things in pockets spoils the line, hence no space to put things in them. We're starting to see that with super skinny jeans for men as well and the perfusion of the "man bag"...
@@samroberts7404 I think you may be right but it's honestly very frustrating to not be able to choose an alternative without just shopping for men's pants. If all your options were made like skinny jeans even when they are definitely not that fit...
@@samroberts7404 I haven't finished the video yet but I always assumed this too. Having bulky things in your pockets disrupts from your figure, and women's clothes basically solely exist for people to stare at women's bodies, so....
I….have followed the Pocket discourse from different historical RUclipsrs right now….but I can I just say I really love the commitment of making pockets through the ages? Well done!

@@sunset-city It's a guy thing, too. 😁 But admittedly it has been a few years since I lived in the US. Back then, bottled water was measured in liters, like it was a first world country, but beer and soda was measured in ye olde flounces. For historical reasons, I assume. 😇
I remember in the 80's pockets in women's clothing were either scaled down or non existent because women complained that the pockets made them look heavier than they were. Especially when you actually put something in the pocket. Everyone carried purses so pockets just didn't seem necessary. I hated it.

I am a guy and I bought a pair of thrift shop women's jeans that was left on the men's rack by mistake. I put them on recently and I was like "Why are these pockets so small? And why do my legs look so shapely ohhhhhh" Its really dumb, girls are getting robbed.
Hahahaha the voice in which I read "and why do my legs look so shapely ohhhhh" I see women's jeans in the men's section of the thrift store accidentally all the time.
I started cackling when you said that you were going to make pants. I am so glad that you trusted the process, paused to review the tutorial, and followed the directions. You are a champion!
Nah it’s really fun seeing people learning to sew, I’ve been doing basics projects like pillows / bags and sewing my sisters patches for her uniform for years, but I’ve just recently been trying to learn actual clothes and it’s super difficult, but very rewarding!
ok but also: wallets for women vs. men! Women's wallets are already the size of a purse, so you need a bag for a purse for a wallet. I've been buying men's wallets for decades, and they actually do fit in my tiny pockets (unlike my phone, that sticks out half way)
I used to use men's wallet then i found an old random wallet in the house with the dimensions of a credit card which is like 1.5 inches thick. This has been perfect for me as I'm a broke college student and only carry some cash and 1/2 cards. I don't know what brand/style it is or how old it is but I'm so scared of losing it atp I'd be more upset losing the wallet than losing the money i have inside of it. I wear my dad's old pants so i literally have room to spare after carrying my wallet, phone, earbuds, lip balm, lipstick and keys (sometimes a notebook and a pen as well!)
There are big men's wallets too, especially those designed to fit way too many credit cards or even a full check book. It's just not as popular as the typical book-fold wallet.
Good point. Mum's wallet is almost double the size of mine. Mine fits easily in my pockets, but Mum's would poke out in my shallower ones. As for my phone, I put it in my shirt pocket, rather than my trousers. More convenient for when I want to change what I have playing.
The saddest thing about this video is how deliriously happy it made me to hear the phrase "Statistically Significant!" People making videos, or journalists reporting on scientific findings never seem to understand the analysis of the results, because they never use the aforementioned all-important term. Hearing it used here assured me that Ms. Progress appears to understand how to properly analyse results.

The theory I have been running with - you can see when Taha fills his pockets what people mean by "ruining the line of the clothes" when you fill pockets. It makes clothing unflattering when you have bulky items in your pockets. The sexism of the pocket problems is that clothes makers for men presume men can decide for themselves if they wanna make their figures look good or not, it is up the the men to decide whether or not to use the pockets. But clothes makers for women don't want their clothes seen on frumpy looking women with lumpy things in the cargo pockets.
This is the real reason. Women's clothes are generally tighter and close-fitting, so you simply can't fit big pockets into them without it being a lumpy mess, and since people don't generally want to look like lumpy messes, women get tiny pockets.
Well said, ma'am. Indeed, a large portion of industrial pattern makers are male, but most homesewers are women. So a lot of commercial women's garments are tech designed and graded by males, who never would wear those design and are ignorant toward how much they suck at doing their job.
Dear God, why does everything have to be sexist? It's cost savings. Basic economics. No sexism involved in any way. The clothing companies noticed (through spending millions on market research) that women didn't want to put anything in there pockets (for the exact reason you just stated), and so they decided it wasn't financially worth it to bother putting the pocket in to start with. Pockets aren't free. They don't just appear on a completed garment. The material and the labor of sewing it on costs money. Sure, per pair, it's a tiny cost, but multiply that out to hundreds of millions of pairs of pants, and it's not hard to see why they'd decide to leave out a feature that the majority of there customers aren't going to use anyway. Men's pants retain there deep pockets because that same millions in market research showed that men actually use them.
Purses were *also* originally unisex. It's important to note that basically all of men's clothing is the Unisex version, like T-shirts come in Women's and Unisex generally. That said, it's partly fashion; men's clothing tends to prioritize function (and every time one more dedicated to fashion comes out it tends to get a lot of blowback for loss of function, like skinny jeans which still have better pockets but they tend to suck to use), and women's lend themselves heavily towards aesthetics. A thing about pockets, if not wearing Fairly Loose pants, is that stuff in the pockets REALLY screws up the shape and look of the hips/thighs. An interesting thing that might be of interest to look at in a similar vein is the spread of options for men vs. women in terms of clothing readily available, the joke about men having just one outfit is often nearly true, because there are no real other options.
I've seen lots of dudes complain or notice that women get a ton more fashion options. And this is absolutely true. I wish everything was just available to everyone. Women get cargo pants that actually fit with out having to go to the mens section and learn to sow so that there isn't a gap and guys get a fancy dress to float around in that actually fits their body formation instead of looking goofy because it doesn't suit their body type.
@@SioxerNikitathat's literally how my brother dresses. Tons of t-shirts, tons of black jeans/pants and tons of graphic sweatshirts and the same pair of nike dunks in different colours. Then argues with me about me having to have winter shoes (I only have three pairs of boots), sandals, fancy sandals, casual sandals/slides, heeled sandals etc. The last pair of shoes I got this year (I think I got 6 in total if not more) I justified by saying I don't have long distance walking shoes that don't hurt my foot to some degree like my sketchers do. Fs
@@vixxcelacea2778I actually find that cargo pants are the ones that fit best with wide legged pants from the women's. I'm very skinny and often the smallest among conventional sizes so around XS-S. Because the wide legged ones don't constrict my slightly bigger hips so it doesn't gap as much. And a lot of cargo pants have elastic waists meaning they fit really snug and the leg is super oversized like I like them. I have a pair that cuffs at the end that I consider my winter pants and they fit so well I'm shocked. They don't hurt, they stay on without a belt and look so cool with the chain detail they added on the side. I will still sew my own clothes as I love doing so and I can custom make my fit pretty well and I can choose the fabric. I recently made myself some cargo pants and in the future I might make myself some wool cargo pants for winter. I also love the extra storage you get with cargo pants and them being on the larger side make pockets super comfortable.
Finally someone says the real reason: VANITY. It's because we all wanted slim fitting pants, and the industry gave us tiny pockets, so we all bought purses, and never looked back. Now, even if we buy bubble jeans, the manufacturers might still not give us big pockets! Why would they? Fabric costs $$ and now they know we don't expect big pockets, so they won't offer them to us.
I have severe ADHD and could definitely not sit for 25 minutes watching a single video without skipping or doing something else. I don't know what it was about your video but you were able to keep my interest and attention the entire time and I actually watched it all, this was the first time in I think months that something like this has happened!! Your style is very good at explaining the facts with nuance while not boring the viewer!
I'm a man, and have been all my life, and I never filled my jeans pockets to the brim like Taha did, jokingly, of course, or I hope. I merely put my phone and my keys in there, and that's it-all the rest of my everyday carry goes in my extremely manly everyday backpack. One of my best mates used to put everything in his jeans pockets when he was a teen, and I remember him looking like a giant dork. I don't have the confidence to rock that look. Seriously, though, I think a normal pocket should be able to fit at least your whole hand. So yeah, women's trouser manufacturers should watch this video. This is wild that this is a reality.
The main difference, I think, is that you have the option to put any of those things in your pocket at any given time. Like, sure, you're not going to put a water bottle, a bag of snacks, and a controller in there, perhaps. But your phone, your keys, a pen, your wallet - THESE things are unreasonable to put in your pockets. And the vast majority of women's pants can't hold ANY of those things alone, much less combined! Like already the fact that you said you had your phone and keys in there is a flex on ladies' pants 😹 I'm a part of the backpack crew, but there are times where ALL I NEED is my phone, and I'd like to leave my bag at home since it's just extra bulk. But I STILL have to carry my backpack with me because my phone can't fit in any of my pockets. You're 100% right: of more people in charge of pant-making watched this, it may help them realize haha
Yeah I mean… I can’t even put my keys in my pants pocket. Just my keys. I could put *a* key. But not the whole key ring with house keys, shed key, car key…. Actually, to be fair, I can’t put my car key in my pants pockets at all. I often wear a coat just for the pockets.
I carry everything in my pockets but then again "everything" 99% of the time is just my phone and a chums wallet with only 2 keys attached to the key ring, ultra minimalist. I do have a backpack for work mainly to haul around my work laptop to and from the office, and my lunch box, and a sling bag for traveling far from home.
@@cyclicmusings2661 …I say again. I cannot fit my car key, by itself, into most of my pants pockets. I would love to be able to fit a phone AND a wallet AND multiple keys. “Minimal” - sure. 🤦🏼♀️🤣
Exactly! Who wants to grab a bag, however tiny, every time they need to go from one room to another at home, or at work? You may still want a bag for some gear, but there's no excuse for not being able to carry the basics on your person.
I have to say, Sabrina, that your home-made trousers/pants really look extraordinarily good on you! The colour, cut and fit are much more flattering than the jeans or sweats you usually wear. I think you should look into vintage fashion even more. In any case, a great result and keep up the good work!
Definitely! At this point, she has been a beginner at at so much random stuff that it's no longer beginner luck, it's just elite beginner skills and I believe she could for sure make whatever everyday item she needs
Yeah, that's an obscenely good result for someone's first pair of pants. Even given the baggy fit is more forgiving. I didn't get the knack of sewing the fly front until many pairs in. Still don't have it tbh!
When I was in high school, there was one girl who was into a punk aesthetic. She would sometimes sneak an entire 2 liter bottle of soda to school in one of her pockets. Aside from details like spikes and useless belts, the general design of most punk-style pants is a holdover from the original design for cargo pants, pants designed specifically for British soldiers to carry the supplies needed for a long trip on foot. Your fashion sense definitely impacts how much you need to alter clothes to carry what you need in your pockets.
I love how you go far in the process of making this video. You make jokes, you fabric, you study books, you ask people and you invite friends. That’s so cool thank you for your work!
5:45 the confusion on Taha's face... a message to all men out there: WHEN IT COMES TO PANTS AND POCKETS YOU HAVE NOT BEEN THROUGH WHAT WE HAVE BEEN THROUGH AND THIS VIDEO MIGHT BE YOUR FIRST SIGN.
My daughter needed a bottle of conditioner as her hair got tangled badly after snorkelling on vacation. I returned eating a bag of crisps/chips and there was much anger until I pulled out the half litre bottle from my pocket.
The sheer joy and creative fun you had making this is evident throughout the video and makes it such a delight to watch. I had a big grin on my face the whole time. Amazing work! I've found higher waist pants for women sometimes have bigger pockets, but in general I feel like women's pockets are limited because the designs often focus on being figure-hugging rather than... not, I guess. Men's pants tend to fit more loosely, so there's room between the pant and the leg for the pocket items, if that makes sense. Like even if our jeans pockets are the same size, my husband can fit my bulky inhaler in his pocket almost invisibly, but for me it sticks out as a big lump in my pocket because my jeans fit so close to the body.
I wonder if it could partly have something to do with how women’s pants are usually more fitted than men’s. When men’s pants are more fitted, like skinny jeans for example, the pockets are smaller because having a bunch of extra fabric for pockets creates weird bulges. The looser the pants, the deeper the pockets. I suspect this does not not explain it but just a thought
Mens skinny jeans still have pockets that you can fit your whole hand into and looser styles of womens pants will still have pockets that are only a few inches deep.
When I saw you fitting the tassel to the reticule I literary shouted "nooooo, that's the INSIDE of the pocket!". I'm glad noone was around to see me shout at my computer.

And gives us a new perspective on society, things, the world... Love it.
yup there is an uncomfortable amount of slavery in the clothing industry. I try hard not to rely on probable slavery, but I don't really have the budget to afford ethically sourced clothing
Almost any time you wonder "how is this so cheap?" the answer is depressing. How can any company sell $7 jeans and still profit? Because of sweatshops and cut corners. How can tuna be caught, flown overseas, packaged etc in less than a week and sold for $10? Because of sea slavery and illegal overfishing. The global supply chain has made us blind to the actual cost of what we're consuming.
I did not expect to find such a gem of a channel on a random Saturday morning. This might be the most engaging and entertaining video I've seen all month. Dude I love you
One thing that was not mentioned is that women pants in general are much more slim than mens pants. Thats also a factor - you cannot have big pockets if material is tight fitted to your skin
Genuinely surprised this didn't come up at all, especially when she mentioned looking at dress pants, which often *do* have actual pockets, but tend to be sown shut so they sit better on you (you're meant to unpick them if you want pocket real estate) I feel you even see this with men's clothes - I wear men's pants but usually have to go for a slim fit due to my waist and they definitely have smaller pockets than their full sized brethren
Also pants that suck in your tummy the pockets are probably fake. The pockets work against the tummy control. Now like non-skinny jeans and stuff...those could have huge pockets without messing up the lines of the pants.
I just went pants shopping, got slim fit mens pants, I could fit twice as much in the mens pants pockets than in the regular/"straight" fit womens pants I tried on minutes before Anecdotal but I still think it is worth something. My slimfit (mens) pants also obviously have more space than the way baggier pants that Melissa showed in the video (I could fit my whole hand and my arm halfway to my elbow)
I have something named "cargo jeans", they are not slim at all. They have like a big pockets on the back and on the side, but standard one in the front? THEY ARE SMALL. Still.
Women’s jeans have never fit me so for years i avoided all jeans. Then I tried men’s jeans from a target and that’s all I’ll wear now and probably forever lol I wish I could remember exactly why I decided to even check the mens section or try them on but I do think pockets was part of it 😂 they have full sized pockets reasonably priced when you consider how long they do last and at first I wore their skinny jeans but I gained weight and now I’m in the slim fit and they are just awesome. They are stretchy and just completely comfortable for all day everyday, I don’t wear anything else now 😂 I’m not sure if I’ll watch this entire video but why not just go buy different jeans with pockets instead of sewing pockets into current pairs I bought 7 pairs of jeans from target around Black Friday for $120 and I don’t know if I’ll ever get them that cheap again 😂 but last year I went thru 10 pairs in the year and they cost $30-40 a pair normally and I was willing to spend that because of the comfortably lol and I’d usually only buy 2-3 pairs at a time lol. so the Black Friday pricing was a real steal

Sabrina, I love the pants you made! They look fantastic. Sewing is such a great hobby. My aunt and I (mostly my aunt) made a pair of pants for me that has super colorful stripes, and I wear them out if I'm feeling particularly chipper. When you sew for yourself, you get so many more options. The first time I encountered water-resistant fabric I was like, wait, I can make myself a raincoat?? The possibilities for both practicality and creativity in sewing are *chef's kiss* My assumption going into this video was that pants producers cared more about the silhouette, and I guess that wasn't too off-base? I stopped carrying a purse around college after temporarily losing it IN MY OWN CAR. Now, I just carry a thin fabric wallet. I mourned having to downsize a little, but I'm not carrying the worry that I'll misplace a bag. I kind of like winter simply because I get to use coat pockets instead of trying to shove my phone into a pocket that was clearly not designed for it. Maybe I'll have to make myself a pair of external pockets for the summer - those are actually rad and I can't lose something that's physically tied to me! (I would hope, lol) Great video, as per usual!
Button down t shirt with an inside pocket. You can wear that over a tank top as a sun protector/outer shirt on summer days, and that will give you an extra pocket for the phone. Also palazzo pants with deep pockets if you don't want to have cell phone radiation close to your boobs/chest just to be safe.
A friend of mine and me had pretty much the exact same experience as you and Taha! Except that I lean a bit into techwear and had shorts with a total of 10 pockets, the smallest (!) of which can hold a phone, and the largest of which could easily hold a nintendo switch + controller or a 1L water bottle. To say she was devastated is an understatement. EDIT: Since people have been asking I just want to preface the following by saying: In the techwear space there are many good companies that will sell you a great pair of pants/shorts for a reasonable price with a good amount of pockets! That being said, if you're willing to spend the money, the 10-pocket-shorts I had are the "SP29K-M" from ACRONYM.

if women would buy men's clothes for the pockets, and make it clear they were doing so - and also make it clear that using actual measurements in stead of arbitrary sizes is superior, the women's clothing industry would get in line, or die. and I think most men would support you in this. I know I do. pockets are love. pockets are life. also, I can't see the details of the finish on your homemade pants, but from what I see, you did a very good job. they look good.
TBF, men’s pant sizes are also somewhat arbitrary, despite claiming to be the waist size and the inseam length. Especially the waist size. If I measure my waist and buy pants based on that number, they will absolutely be too large. How too large? 🤷depends on brand and style. A pair of 32/34 pants will be smaller than 34/34 in the same style from the same brand but other than that, we can’t go by raw numbers alone. Shirt sizes (collar and sleeve length) tend to be more accurate though.
who said this is for him? you are the one carrying him and the pockets made it convenient for you to put items into your baby. pretty clever actually, turning a baby into a purse.
As a hobby sewist, I enjoyed this video SO MUCH! Sabrina, girl, how many hobbies do you have in that oversized, handmade pocket? 😆 ...I really believe sewing is a worthwhile skill to have. It's not for everyone, but definitely something many of us should consider to battle the evils of fast fashion consumerism 💪💪💪
My pockets are actually very deep because I made them so. Sewing is such an amazing skill that is so undervalued in our current society. ❤ And all my coats have inside pockets, too. 🥰
I love y'all's channel so much. The rotation of videos between the three of you in combination with the like zoom/facetime calls mixed in is so lovely. I feel like sharing between the three of you gets to show the research you do, as well as the sheer nerdy excitement of sharing with friends new things you learned.
I've heard for years the (from what I understand, true) rumor that companies intentionally lie about women's pants sizes to cater to women with body issues. I had to learn the hard way that just because men's sizes are more consistent doesn't mean that they are _totally_ consistent, or that they map to anything real. In the before times I would shop for new pants by taking a selection of sizes close to what I'm already wearing and just buy the size that fits. During covid however you couldn't use the changing rooms. So I had the idea to measure myself and buy an entire wardrobes worth of pants using those measurements under the assumption that the sizes were in inches. Every single pair was 2 to 3 sizes too big. The craziest part? The leg length was totally accurate.
This video is THE BEST EVER!! And so timely because I was just discussing altering my clothes to add pockets! (Or my phone was spying? So actually grateful for it!)
This is one of the reasons I make my own clothes. I love making a dress and adding a big enough pockets. I made my wedding dress with a floofy skirt and big enough pockets for all my essentials, which was glorious.
Trans guy here. Early in my transition I started wearing mens jeans to explore. It was a REVELATION. I knew men had larger pockets, but the sheer difference was staggering. Women have no idea what majesty there is in having a pair of pants that can honestly fit everything you need
As someone who works as a tailor I am very entertained and also VERY proud of you for making pants!! They turned out awesome and I bet u will cherish them forever x3 also all the pants I make for myself have huuuuuuuger pockets to compensate for my life long trauma with womens pants
I’m so shocked she didn’t come across Bernadette Banner’s videos on this, including the one where she shows you how to make a historical pocket you can wear now.
Taha's point about work pants vs fashion pants reminds me of the reason why men's and women's gymnastics have different events - men's was the original, and was just a collection of existing strength exercises; women's came later and was designed for elegance and artistry. Obviously this is also related to sexism lol
I think about this a lot with dancers. Some dance styles have men and women of very different body types because the men have to be strong enough to perform lifts and the women have to be small enough to be lifted, but the differences between their capabilities are described as if they're the difference between men and women as a whole. Contrast this with something like running or swimming where everyone who does the same event professionally has the same body type. You probably could reverse the roles if you found a group of large athletic women and small athletic men
Torrid, a women’s plus size store in Canada and the US, is the one women’s clothing brand that has amazing pockets. It has completely changed the game for me over the past 10 years. Almost everything they sell now has very large pockets, including dresses and yoga pants. You can buy a wedding dress from Torrid and it will have pockets.
i love this video so much. it has every one of my favorite things; random unhinged sewing projects while learning about fashion history but also taha and melissa questioning sabrina's sanity
One thing to understand is: Men *do not* buy pants with small pockets. Even skinny jeans. Ever6 brand that tried discontinued the production because no one was buying them.
I bought 3 pairs of jeans of the same design but different colours and had to return 2 because the pockets weren't as big as in the pair I tried on. I can't wear them if I can't carry my stuff.
One thing to understand, it depends on class, smooth lines still apply as a sign of leisure. Also male peacocking is different than female, which is why its worth it for women to forgo pockets, there is no conspiracy there.
I loved this video! In the 1970’s, the size pockets in women’s jeans & trousers were more in line with the size the pockets in men’s clothing. As the 1980’s came to a close, pockets in women’s clothing started to become smaller. In part, due to a larger pocket holding more items would disrupt the line of the pants & make the silhouette look lumpy. In order to combat this problem, the pockets were made significantly smaller. To the point they are useless now
Taha: this video is about what makes you procrastinate! Melissa: this video is about testing different lip balms! Sabrina: IM GONNA MAKE A ROCKET TO FLY TO SPACE

"how are people buying pants on the internet for like $10??? These take so long to make!!"
Not only did Sabrina discover sexism in this video, she also discovered the rampant exploitation of workers in the garment industry.
it's a tiny bit concerning that it took them that long
We used to have MULTIPLE garment unions with tens of thousands of workers, but they all dissolved and the workers remaining in the unions were absorbed into the UFCW or UNITE in the 90's. I'm a very young Gen Xer and I remember the commercials they used to play to "Look for the Union Label" in your clothing to support American made fashion.
Also industry in general. A well paid worker can probably give you a really cheap pair of pants if they used factory tools
Also that, when you know what your doing and do it every day, you are a lot quicker at it.
As a tailor once put it to me: "Men's clothes are designed to fit you, women's clothes are designed for you to fit in them"
Pockets with things in them would "ruin" the intended silhouette, therefore they aren't seriously engineered to put things in. It's the dumbest thing in the world.
I think that's the closest to an explanation.
But then why not have both for women?
@@rogerwilco2 but then why not buy men or unisex pants, I just buy whatever cloth fits my need, never bother if it's label for men or women.
The silhouette being ruined by real pockets is true though. Alot of Women like that silhouette. I do think they should make both though. I wonder if those loose boyfriend jeans have better pockets.
You’ve got a point, however I thrifted some men’s trousers that fit me perfectly (and a bit tight) but it’s still got pretty deep usable pockets
That's just the God's honest truth though.
When I was in high school in the late 2000s, most of the girls in my class had jeans with useable pockets. And they complained about them constantly.
"This pocket is bulging through my jeans even though there's nothing in it!"
Women to this day do the exact same thing with underwear.

Because they like the shape the jeans make and pockets would ruin that shape. It's really simple.

I've been buying men's wallets for decades, and they actually do fit in my tiny pockets (unlike my phone, that sticks out half way)
fortunately, you can buy a men's wallet and have it fit your money. you cant buy men's pants and have it fit your crotch.
why are there even men or women wallets? its not like money or cards change in site in size depending on the sex
The saddest thing about this video is how deliriously happy it made me to hear the phrase "Statistically Significant!"
People making videos, or journalists reporting on scientific findings never seem to understand the analysis of the results, because they never use the aforementioned all-important term.

Or perhaps so the not enough real demand for it
This is the real reason.
@@GeneralNicklesdo you have any source about the market researches you memtioned?
Looks in my closet. 7 pairs of the same jeans and 8 of the same shirt in different colors. Peak male fashion.
19:58 I love that her first thought when holding all of them was "I can have all the pockets"

"Why not buy a purse?" Want to forget that purse somewhere when all you wanted to do was carry your phone, now lost??

19:58 the timing of the cut is perfect. Right as the idea pops into everyone’s head, it is realized 😂
Yeah 10/10 fashion would go on a quest with
I thought this too. Are suffragette pants back?
Yeah, that's an obscenely good result for someone's first pair of pants. Even given the baggy fit is more forgiving. I didn't get the knack of sewing the fly front until many pairs in. Still don't have it tbh!
I hope she gets good use out of them long after this video goes up.

I love how you get so excited about things as you go because it looks so genuine
I love Taha just casually taking a drink and grabbing a snack straight out of his pocket

I've been saying it for years. The first company to make pants for women with actual pockets will win all the money

Some companies do tho, people just don't care enough

I wonder if it could partly have something to do with how women’s pants are usually more fitted than men’s. When men’s pants are more fitted, like skinny jeans for example, the pockets are smaller because having a bunch of extra fabric for pockets creates weird bulges. The looser the pants, the deeper the pockets. I suspect this does not not explain it but just a thought
I think it does explain it, partly, anyway. Close-fitting pants won't look very good with long pockets running down the inside of the leg.
Yes. Women care about the silhouette. Men don't mind pocket bumps
It's a full explanation.
All the whiners are basically idiots.
This is definitely a factor.

Its not, the value of adornment and attraction are obviously lost with the author.
18:28 yep. because sweatshops, fast fashion, and consumers conditioned to expect items for a low price
yup there is an uncomfortable amount of slavery in the clothing industry. I try hard not to rely on probable slavery, but I don't really have the budget to afford ethically sourced clothing

@@JosiahWendell-sr8visame😭. I can't afford anything better than fast fashion.
Genuinely surprised this didn't come up at all, especially when she mentioned looking at dress pants, which often *do* have actual pockets, but tend to be sown shut so they sit better on you (you're meant to unpick them if you want pocket real estate)
I feel you even see this with men's clothes - I wear men's pants but usually have to go for a slim fit due to my waist and they definitely have smaller pockets than their full sized brethren
Also pants that suck in your tummy the pockets are probably fake. The pockets work against the tummy control. Now like non-skinny jeans and stuff...those could have huge pockets without messing up the lines of the pants.
I just went pants shopping, got slim fit mens pants, I could fit twice as much in the mens pants pockets than in the regular/"straight" fit womens pants I tried on minutes before
Anecdotal but I still think it is worth something.
19:58 I love seeing the idea to wear them all at once emerge in front of our very eyes
FYI, if you ever have any fashion history questions, my go to's are Abby Cox, Nicole Rudolph and Bernadette Banner 😁. Great video btw! As a historical costumer, it was great seeing you make the pockets!
@AbbyCox made a vid on this exact problem a while back.

'guys theres so much room in here' I WAS LAUGHING THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE VID LOL BUT THIS HAD ME CACKLING RIGHT AT THE END thanks team!
The possibilities for both practicality and creativity in sewing are *chef's kiss*
My assumption going into this video was that pants producers cared more about the silhouette, and I guess that wasn't too off-base? I stopped carrying a purse around college after temporarily losing it IN MY OWN CAR. Now, I just carry a thin fabric wallet. I mourned having to downsize a little, but I'm not carrying the worry that I'll misplace a bag. I kind of like winter simply because I get to use coat pockets instead of trying to shove my phone into a pocket that was clearly not designed for it. Maybe I'll have to make myself a pair of external pockets for the summer - those are actually rad and I can't lose something that's physically tied to me! (I would hope, lol)
Great video, as per usual!
I was also thinking of a certain pocket-centered clothing company.
Where did you get those shorts? They sound amazing.

Which I have been doing. It's a bit finicky but so very worth it.
She showed she’s done that in the beginning of the video too
Would it be easier to cannibalize the pockets from thrifted menswear?
if women would buy men's clothes for the pockets, and make it clear they were doing so - and also make it clear that using actual measurements in stead of arbitrary sizes is superior, the women's clothing industry would get in line, or die. and I think most men would support you in this.
Shirt sizes (collar and sleeve length) tend to be more accurate though.
if the demand for usable pockets would be so high it would be stupid to ignore it as such pants would sell like no other...

Taha's point about work pants vs fashion pants reminds me of the reason why men's and women's gymnastics have different events - men's was the original, and was just a collection of existing strength exercises; women's came later and was designed for elegance and artistry. Obviously this is also related to sexism lol
Also balance beam on men’s might cause some unpleasant injuries
You can buy a wedding dress from Torrid and it will have pockets.
thanks for the rec, good to know!
Obrigada, se for ao Canadá comprarei lá, tenho muitos problemas com bolsos minúsculos no Brasil...
Walmart has very small men's sweats and geans. As long as you aren't smaller than 5 feet you can definitely find affordable pockets there.
i love this video so much. it has every one of my favorite things; random unhinged sewing projects while learning about fashion history but also taha and melissa questioning sabrina's sanity
1:19 You overestimate men... we would simply stop wearing pants 💀
😂😂😂 Why don't I have any doubts that this is 100% true?!
... I'd raise a counterargument, but... I have to agree. As much as it pains me to say, you are not wrong.
To the point they are useless now
8:05 I'm bursting into laughter at this point lmaooo.
I was already😂😂😂 Oh boy...
I love Sabrina’s energy in this video. Really gives a sense of her identity
Taha: this video is about what makes you procrastinate!
Melissa: this video is about testing different lip balms!
Sabrina: IM GONNA MAKE A ROCKET TO FLY TO SPACE
13:43 18:54 23:29 Sabrina's excitement is genuinely so cute and wholesome, it made me also wanna smile and jump around and clap to celebrate too!! This is why i love watching your videos so much, it reminds me of all the little wonders of life and the curiosity of discovering the world that i've lost and been struggling to find back as an adult. Thank you so much for another super interesting vid as always! Sometimes i do question random mundane things in life too but end up being like "nah whatever, i've had enough to care about", so it's super refreshing to see someone passionately jump on random quests to discover the truth behind all the most simple and daily subjects like this.
7:10 "Lip balm, another lip balm" Love that Melissa still has too many chapsticks from the last episode
