for real, now I just want a whole channel of him putting things in his pockets while girls react and slowly lose their minds. "NO! NOOOO!! Not a Nintendo Switch!!! AND THE DOCK??? WHAT THE F***CK?!"
I had a similar conversation at one point where I showed that I could fit a whole nintendo switch in my pocket and it didn't even create a visible outline on the outside.
As a pro seamstress, I freaking love it when beginner sewers realise how much work it takes to make the basics. Love that you caught it on camera and your pants came out so well!! I want a pair
As a child I wrapped a present and the difficulty with aligning everything on a box made me realize clothes with curved surfaces must be much much much more difficult.
@@finkelmanaNot really, since you can buy pants for like 5 bucks and take them for granted everyday, people assume it's easier compared with stuff that pays more. Many tasks in skilled trades that you can make $100 an hour doing are gonna be easier than making a pair of pants you could get for $20, because of industrialization and globalization.
The outlines are the most embarrassing implementation. Like if you're not gonna have pockets at least commit to it. Don't pretend there's something there if there isn't
Your three year old doesn't fill his pockets with cool looking rocks and lizards? This seems like a parenting failure. (Not sure if it's your failure or mine, lol)
@@icarusgaming6269 You would be surprised by how many objects underwent this process in history. In archaeology there is the whole concept of things that lost their function throughout history but their form got retained in some form or another as a kind of ornament on later objects. Up until the point that no one even remembered what function that was originally but everyone just accepted that this ornament should be there out of habit. It's prominently visible in some tools and pottery. Pockets in women's pants are right in the middle of that process right now. They get smaller and smaller and sometimes disappear into a mere ornament without function already. Just because people expect something of that form to be on that place of the pants. Maybe in the future the concept of pockets will be forgotten completely but abstract bow-like ornamants will still be sewn to the upper part of space pants.
Oh jeah, a had ABSOLUTELY no idea people do that bs. Then i needed a new suit jacket and there where 2 pockets that where closed, i didnt get that when buying. i thought shure they just made an error and closed them up by accident. Until i was stupid enough to cut them open.... 🤣🤦♂
Once a few years ago I had so much trouble finding women's black pants with decent pockets, and also weren't made of lint-magnet fabric, that I got a pair with fabric I liked and took it to a tailor (the kind of place that also does dry cleaning, not a posh dressy one) to get better pockets put in. Sadly I have zero memory of how much I paid and the price has likely gone up since then anyway, but that IS another option.
The thing is that men wouldn't buy pants without pockets while women do. Men in general try on pants and stick their hands in the pockets and if they don't fit in there men don't buy them. You hear a woman in this video admit she have some pants without pockets, so they simply sell pocket-less pants to women whereas such pants would stay in the store unsold in a store for men. On average women goes for fashion over function and men goes for function over fashion. That's why they can sell pants without pockets and small pockets to women but not to men.
My younger sister found a gorgeous dress for her wedding day. And do you know what she was most excited about and kept telling everyone who complimented the dress? "IT HAS POCKETS!!!" She showed off the pockets to every woman at that ceremony. I am sure the men were confused why all the women were so excited on her behalf about something so simple. But why then is something so simple, denied to us. Give us the damn pockets.
My wedding dress also had pockets! It was so nice, I kept my vows and a handkerchief in there. My bridesmaids were all so excited for me when I put them on and went "pockets!!!".
things in this video that make me, as a sewist, very happy: - floor sewing TM - bobbin chicken - NO THE TASSELS GONNA BE ON THE WRONG SIDE - books as pattern weights! - the magic of fly zippers - "HOW ARE PEOPLE BUYING PANTS FOR LIKE $10 ON THE INTERNET"
"how are people buying pants on the internet for like $10??? These take so long to make!!" Not only did Sabrina discover sexism in this video, she also discovered the rampant exploitation of workers in the garment industry.
We used to have MULTIPLE garment unions with tens of thousands of workers, but they all dissolved and the workers remaining in the unions were absorbed into the UFCW or UNITE in the 90's. I'm a very young Gen Xer and I remember the commercials they used to play to "Look for the Union Label" in your clothing to support American made fashion.
Well, standardized pants in a factory in asia definitely don't take that long to make. The people making them typically only do a few highly efficient tasks each, which they could do with closed eyes because they have done it thousands of times. No one there does every step of the process. It's not at all different from a factory worker in a car plant in the US or Europe. Parts of the process of making pants has long been fully automated, too.
When my husband is looking for something on his person, basically patting himself down, I call it the "dance of the man with too many pockets". Great video 🥰
The shirt theory: why men take off shirts by pulling them up and over the head from the back, whereas women take of their shirts by crossing arms over the front, grabbing the hem to pull them overhead. (Tbh there's already hypotheses about this on a Tumblr post, but I still would love Sabrina to go down the rabbit hole)
tbh i think a lot of thrift stores are used to weird customers? lots of people are thrifting to upcycle, resell, make costumes, clothe groups of people by measurements... measuring the pockets alone might be a little odd but probably doesn't look that different from people measuring clothes for fit
In college, I had a petite gf. I would stand behind her and put my hands in her jeans pockets sometimes. Typically I couldn’t even get my entire fingers in there, much less any of my palm or thumb. Like, they were the perfect size for chapstick.
I do men's exclusively since I like pockets and ever since I was a kid I would tear pants just by looking at them wrong . Was shopping with my sister and found a cute pair and asked the clerk what woman's pants matched my ratio and she was so confused 😅
I'm a man, and have been all my life, and I never filled my jeans pockets to the brim like Taha did, jokingly, of course, or I hope. I merely put my phone and my keys in there, and that's it-all the rest of my everyday carry goes in my extremely manly everyday backpack. One of my best mates used to put everything in his jeans pockets when he was a teen, and I remember him looking like a giant dork. I don't have the confidence to rock that look. Seriously, though, I think a normal pocket should be able to fit at least your whole hand. So yeah, women's trouser manufacturers should watch this video. This is wild that this is a reality.
The main difference, I think, is that you have the option to put any of those things in your pocket at any given time. Like, sure, you're not going to put a water bottle, a bag of snacks, and a controller in there, perhaps. But your phone, your keys, a pen, your wallet - THESE things are unreasonable to put in your pockets. And the vast majority of women's pants can't hold ANY of those things alone, much less combined! Like already the fact that you said you had your phone and keys in there is a flex on ladies' pants 😹 I'm a part of the backpack crew, but there are times where ALL I NEED is my phone, and I'd like to leave my bag at home since it's just extra bulk. But I STILL have to carry my backpack with me because my phone can't fit in any of my pockets. You're 100% right: of more people in charge of pant-making watched this, it may help them realize haha
Yeah I mean… I can’t even put my keys in my pants pocket. Just my keys. I could put *a* key. But not the whole key ring with house keys, shed key, car key…. Actually, to be fair, I can’t put my car key in my pants pockets at all. I often wear a coat just for the pockets.
I carry everything in my pockets but then again "everything" 99% of the time is just my phone and a chums wallet with only 2 keys attached to the key ring, ultra minimalist. I do have a backpack for work mainly to haul around my work laptop to and from the office, and my lunch box, and a sling bag for traveling far from home.
@@cyclicmusings2661 …I say again. I cannot fit my car key, by itself, into most of my pants pockets. I would love to be able to fit a phone AND a wallet AND multiple keys. “Minimal” - sure. 🤦🏼♀️🤣
And economies of scale - ya know, cutting out huge swaths of cloth based on templates and then feeding them into machines which sew along pre-determined stitch lines.
As a tailor once put it to me: "Men's clothes are designed to fit you, women's clothes are designed for you to fit in them" Pockets with things in them would "ruin" the intended silhouette, therefore they aren't seriously engineered to put things in. It's the dumbest thing in the world.
The silhouette being ruined by real pockets is true though. Alot of Women like that silhouette. I do think they should make both though. I wonder if those loose boyfriend jeans have better pockets.
That's just the God's honest truth though. When I was in high school in the late 2000s, most of the girls in my class had jeans with useable pockets. And they complained about them constantly. "This pocket is bulging through my jeans even though there's nothing in it!" Women to this day do the exact same thing with underwear. The whole "visible panty line" thing. The underwear ruining that silhouette is the whole reason "no show" panties were invented.
As a guy I've taken to carrying a purse, I mean for men it's a satchel but same idea. Because if you're disabled or chronically ill you need more stuff. I need to carry my own soap and hand sanitizer that won't make me sick so I can use public restrooms, I need masks in case there's a global pandemic and I need to use public transportation, I need spare medication so if I need to stay over somewhere so I don't have to rush home and I can actually have a social life and if there's an emergency I need to have it all in a bag I can grab on my way out the door without having to fill my pockets before I leave.
I mean you might be able to get away with one of those Jane Austen batman utility belts. Although it's funnier if we say that batman is wearing a Regency pocket girdle or whatever it's called.
When I'm not carrying my mobile office, I use a cross-body day pack to fit stuff I wouldn't need or can't fit in my pants; stuff like my tablet, water bottle, phone charger, etc. The bonus is I can more easily get through any x-ray security checkpoints by temporarily emptying my pants into the bag in the walk up to it.
This was interesting! I've always secretly believed it's because tight trousers/pants look & feel weird when you put lots of stuff into the pockets, and women's fashion generally promotes closer-fitting trousers. As a survivor of the spray-on-skinny era, men's skinny jeans nearly always had microscopic pockets like women's skinny jeans. Nowadays my sisters' oversized jeans have pockets that are bigger than my regular-fit jeans.
ok but also: wallets for women vs. men! Women's wallets are already the size of a purse, so you need a bag for a purse for a wallet. I've been buying men's wallets for decades, and they actually do fit in my tiny pockets (unlike my phone, that sticks out half way)
I used to use men's wallet then i found an old random wallet in the house with the dimensions of a credit card which is like 1.5 inches thick. This has been perfect for me as I'm a broke college student and only carry some cash and 1/2 cards. I don't know what brand/style it is or how old it is but I'm so scared of losing it atp I'd be more upset losing the wallet than losing the money i have inside of it. I wear my dad's old pants so i literally have room to spare after carrying my wallet, phone, earbuds, lip balm, lipstick and keys (sometimes a notebook and a pen as well!)
There are big men's wallets too, especially those designed to fit way too many credit cards or even a full check book. It's just not as popular as the typical book-fold wallet.
Good point. Mum's wallet is almost double the size of mine. Mine fits easily in my pockets, but Mum's would poke out in my shallower ones. As for my phone, I put it in my shirt pocket, rather than my trousers. More convenient for when I want to change what I have playing.
A friend of mine and me had pretty much the exact same experience as you and Taha! Except that I lean a bit into techwear and had shorts with a total of 10 pockets, the smallest (!) of which can hold a phone, and the largest of which could easily hold a nintendo switch + controller or a 1L water bottle. To say she was devastated is an understatement.
The theory I have been running with - you can see when Taha fills his pockets what people mean by "ruining the line of the clothes" when you fill pockets. It makes clothing unflattering when you have bulky items in your pockets. The sexism of the pocket problems is that clothes makers for men presume men can decide for themselves if they wanna make their figures look good or not, it is up the the men to decide whether or not to use the pockets. But clothes makers for women don't want their clothes seen on frumpy looking women with lumpy things in the cargo pockets.
This is the real reason. Women's clothes are generally tighter and close-fitting, so you simply can't fit big pockets into them without it being a lumpy mess, and since people don't generally want to look like lumpy messes, women get tiny pockets.
Well said, ma'am. Indeed, a large portion of industrial pattern makers are male, but most homesewers are women. So a lot of commercial women's garments are tech designed and graded by males, who never would wear those design and are ignorant toward how much they suck at doing their job.
Dear God, why does everything have to be sexist? It's cost savings. Basic economics. No sexism involved in any way. The clothing companies noticed (through spending millions on market research) that women didn't want to put anything in there pockets (for the exact reason you just stated), and so they decided it wasn't financially worth it to bother putting the pocket in to start with. Pockets aren't free. They don't just appear on a completed garment. The material and the labor of sewing it on costs money. Sure, per pair, it's a tiny cost, but multiply that out to hundreds of millions of pairs of pants, and it's not hard to see why they'd decide to leave out a feature that the majority of there customers aren't going to use anyway. Men's pants retain there deep pockets because that same millions in market research showed that men actually use them.
I….have followed the Pocket discourse from different historical RUclipsrs right now….but I can I just say I really love the commitment of making pockets through the ages? Well done!
I thought it was a metric just for practicality. 😂 so it’s not a normal guy thing? I remember seeing this for the first time and acting like it was a magic trick.
@@sunset-city It's a guy thing, too. 😁 But admittedly it has been a few years since I lived in the US. Back then, bottled water was measured in liters, like it was a first world country, but beer and soda was measured in ye olde flounces. For historical reasons, I assume. 😇
I love how you go far in the process of making this video. You make jokes, you fabric, you study books, you ask people and you invite friends. That’s so cool thank you for your work!
@@josefagomezschmeisser8356 I was honestly surprised she didn't see either. Though I did note the appearance of an Evelyn Wood thumbnail as she was showing her RUclips search for sewing tutorials.
I was about to comment about Bernadette, but it's a good thing I found your comment. I still remember her video. "It is an outrageous thought that the industry has not made pockets. It is a sin in itself" And Rachel Maksy is awesome too! I love her videos!! ❤
When my friends complain about pocket size my go to response is "we got the right to vote, we can have pockets too, imagine the carnage". And then I go buy mens jeans. 😭
Exactly. The market supplies what consumers demand. There are entire brands like scottevest centered around huge pockets. There's a whole section of pants marked "men's" that nobody is forbidding women from buying. Any woman that wants big pockets can have them. The people making videos like this don't want a solution, they want an excuse to be sexist and blame men for their own personal choice of what they bought.
i love this video so much. it has every one of my favorite things; random unhinged sewing projects while learning about fashion history but also taha and melissa questioning sabrina's sanity
I have to say, Sabrina, that your home-made trousers/pants really look extraordinarily good on you! The colour, cut and fit are much more flattering than the jeans or sweats you usually wear. I think you should look into vintage fashion even more. In any case, a great result and keep up the good work!
Definitely! At this point, she has been a beginner at at so much random stuff that it's no longer beginner luck, it's just elite beginner skills and I believe she could for sure make whatever everyday item she needs
Yeah, that's an obscenely good result for someone's first pair of pants. Even given the baggy fit is more forgiving. I didn't get the knack of sewing the fly front until many pairs in. Still don't have it tbh!
Sure, pockets are handy. That's why I prefer cargo pants/shorts, regardless of whether they're considered "stylish" or not. All the fashion snobs can bite me. I have comfort and functionality. I don't need their validation. But, I'm all for bags. Whether purses, pocketbooks, or handbags for the ladies, or pouches, fanny packs, sling bags, or backpacks for all, something adjustable and removable is just the way to go.
@7:00 he wasnt done either (well maybe with those pants), there are still the 2 back pockets and the hoodie pocket. and if he has a coat those also have 2+ pockets. We have pockets everywhere and its great.
who said this is for him? you are the one carrying him and the pockets made it convenient for you to put items into your baby. pretty clever actually, turning a baby into a purse.
The sheer joy and creative fun you had making this is evident throughout the video and makes it such a delight to watch. I had a big grin on my face the whole time. Amazing work! I've found higher waist pants for women sometimes have bigger pockets, but in general I feel like women's pockets are limited because the designs often focus on being figure-hugging rather than... not, I guess. Men's pants tend to fit more loosely, so there's room between the pant and the leg for the pocket items, if that makes sense. Like even if our jeans pockets are the same size, my husband can fit my bulky inhaler in his pocket almost invisibly, but for me it sticks out as a big lump in my pocket because my jeans fit so close to the body.
yup there is an uncomfortable amount of slavery in the clothing industry. I try hard not to rely on probable slavery, but I don't really have the budget to afford ethically sourced clothing
Almost any time you wonder "how is this so cheap?" the answer is depressing. How can any company sell $7 jeans and still profit? Because of sweatshops and cut corners. How can tuna be caught, flown overseas, packaged etc in less than a week and sold for $10? Because of sea slavery and illegal overfishing. The global supply chain has made us blind to the actual cost of what we're consuming.
As someone who watches fashion history RUclipsrs see a regular person research fashion history, or pocket fashion history is just amazing. Learned nothing new but enjoyed every second of it
Pockets are a big deal, fam. A bad pocket can legit make you lose your phone or other important stuff. Pockets gotta be practical - like, they should actually hold and protect your things. Jeans? Nah, they’re not it anymore. Adidas track pants with zipped pockets or cargo pants with knee zips are the real MVPs. They’re hard to find sometimes, but trust me, they’re totally worth it.
My daughter needed a bottle of conditioner as her hair got tangled badly after snorkelling on vacation. I returned eating a bag of crisps/chips and there was much anger until I pulled out the half litre bottle from my pocket.
I have a 12 year-old daughter, and we have together lamented the lack of pockets in pants for females. Our solution was nurses and EMT pants. For EMT pants, check out Propper. BTW, that hanging thing you incorrectly called a "pocket" is a 'purse.' Men used to regularly carry a purse. Check out Shakespeare. 😊
If a majority of women were to walk 3 meters across the aisle at target and buy pants with big pockets in the men's section the market would respond accordingly in a single fiscal quarter. Two at most.
OMG! You need to absolutely keep it! Whether it's true or not, this is special to you. People create packages, packages do not create people. Rock it girl, salute kislux !
Sabrina, I love the pants you made! They look fantastic. Sewing is such a great hobby. My aunt and I (mostly my aunt) made a pair of pants for me that has super colorful stripes, and I wear them out if I'm feeling particularly chipper. When you sew for yourself, you get so many more options. The first time I encountered water-resistant fabric I was like, wait, I can make myself a raincoat?? The possibilities for both practicality and creativity in sewing are *chef's kiss* My assumption going into this video was that pants producers cared more about the silhouette, and I guess that wasn't too off-base? I stopped carrying a purse around college after temporarily losing it IN MY OWN CAR. Now, I just carry a thin fabric wallet. I mourned having to downsize a little, but I'm not carrying the worry that I'll misplace a bag. I kind of like winter simply because I get to use coat pockets instead of trying to shove my phone into a pocket that was clearly not designed for it. Maybe I'll have to make myself a pair of external pockets for the summer - those are actually rad and I can't lose something that's physically tied to me! (I would hope, lol) Great video, as per usual!
Button down t shirt with an inside pocket. You can wear that over a tank top as a sun protector/outer shirt on summer days, and that will give you an extra pocket for the phone. Also palazzo pants with deep pockets if you don't want to have cell phone radiation close to your boobs/chest just to be safe.
What an amazing video. It's great you found out a lot of information and shared it with us, but didn't try to force us into one conclusion. It's always stressed me out how fashion is a certain way without reason, and how pockets aren't just bigger when it would have no effect on the look. Honestly if the whole fashion industry and concept of fashion ceased to exist, I think the world could be a much better place.
At the time of this viewing, there's a typo/spelling mistake in the English closed captions / subtitles at 11:30. The captions/subtitles say: "I'm using this all from my book binding phase." But it should be, "I'm using this awl from my book binding phase." I had to look it up. "Awl" is the name of the tool used in book binding that we see her holding in her hand in this video.
My pockets are actually very deep because I made them so. Sewing is such an amazing skill that is so undervalued in our current society. ❤ And all my coats have inside pockets, too. 🥰
Torrid, a women’s plus size store in Canada and the US, is the one women’s clothing brand that has amazing pockets. It has completely changed the game for me over the past 10 years. Almost everything they sell now has very large pockets, including dresses and yoga pants. You can buy a wedding dress from Torrid and it will have pockets.
I am a guy and I bought a pair of thrift shop women's jeans that was left on the men's rack by mistake. I put them on recently and I was like "Why are these pockets so small? And why do my legs look so shapely ohhhhhh" Its really dumb, girls are getting robbed.
Wait I LOVED this video!! It’s probably one of my faves on this channel - it was the perfect mix between knowledge and fun. I really enjoyed the way what felt like hours and hours of serious reading and research were presented to us in such an entertaining way. Once the video ended I was not only laughing out loud because the last scene is hilarious, but I also wished it was longer. I could’ve watched an hour long version of this 🥰
Taha's point about work pants vs fashion pants reminds me of the reason why men's and women's gymnastics have different events - men's was the original, and was just a collection of existing strength exercises; women's came later and was designed for elegance and artistry. Obviously this is also related to sexism lol
I think about this a lot with dancers. Some dance styles have men and women of very different body types because the men have to be strong enough to perform lifts and the women have to be small enough to be lifted, but the differences between their capabilities are described as if they're the difference between men and women as a whole. Contrast this with something like running or swimming where everyone who does the same event professionally has the same body type. You probably could reverse the roles if you found a group of large athletic women and small athletic men
Cargo pants shaming has led to the introduction of tactical/utility pants. They have the extra thigh pocket space, without being an external addition to the pants. The pants, themselves, are made to more closely resemble slacks, but are made of rugged, rip stop materials, like military uniforms.
Hmm... a thought: Keeping stuff in the pockets of pants forces you to regularly review the contents of your pockets (every time you change your pants and pack your things in new pants). In contrast a purse will just swallow all your things without the built-in need to review the contents ever.
As someone with adhd, i realized that if I have pockets, then when I leave the house I'm a lot less likely to forget something because instead of relying on my actual memory, my body can feel if something is missing. When I leave it's wallet, keys, phone. I pat on each pocket to check done. If I have a purse, I physically have it, but I never check inside because my physical memory only needs to feel that a purse is there. But I wear eddie bauer women's jeans which have ok pockets but can't really comfortably hold my inhaler or sunglasses. So I just do without. I've been wanting a more subtle version of waist band pockets that were in this video for a while. Would solve a lot of problems for me because men's pants only work sometimes.
Also read "Pocket's: The Problem with Society is in Women's Pants" by Audrey N. Glickman. Miniscule or no pockets exist in women's dresses and skirts. Worse yet is sometimes a decorative flap evoking a pocket is placed where one should be. There's a trend to include pockets on bridal gowns, too! (Where else would you place your tissues?) I sew. I add human-sized pockets on all of my dresses and skirts, even if not on the pattern.
Taha: this video is about what makes you procrastinate! Melissa: this video is about testing different lip balms! Sabrina: IM GONNA MAKE A ROCKET TO FLY TO SPACE
I love y'all's channel so much. The rotation of videos between the three of you in combination with the like zoom/facetime calls mixed in is so lovely. I feel like sharing between the three of you gets to show the research you do, as well as the sheer nerdy excitement of sharing with friends new things you learned.
I went on this journey too!!!! I love that you made all of the pockets! I haven't gotten around to making the secret pants or the reticule yet but the 18thc tie-on pockets are a DREAM. The only thing is that you have to make sure the tie part is made of a pretty strong material so it doesn't either break or dig into your stomach too much (although I think they wore them over stays so that this wouldn't be a problem). Love seeing my worlds collide like this, thanks Sabrina!!!
My problem with men's pants designs is that they are ridiculously monotonous. Women get better looking pants with zero utility while men get good pockets but the usual dull color palette and standard cut I ended up learning about the pocket problem after buying a few women's pants
@sketchychillandchill I literally cannot find women's pants with big pockets. Besides tracksuits and cargo pants. There are no smart pants with big pockets. I just go to the men's section, and have to get my mum to fix the sizing for me. Women buy a purse because there are no trousers with pockets. You literally missed the point. Even if I bought an ugly pair of trousers, it would have small or no pockets. I prefer loose fitting pants, I don't like tight clothes- and still no pockets. And all I wanna carry on me is my phone, card wallet and my keys/
@hazelcrisp in my country there is some but it just doesn't sell well. When I see the purse of my wife full of useless things even with my cargo I think I can't put everything in it.
@@hazelcrisp Im sure there are some out there, theyre just niche and expensive because they dont sell well. Stuff is only cheap when its mass produced, and if it doesnt sell well, it wont be mass produced, and thus expensive. Watching this video, its clear to see that the reason for this divide is because of fashion trends between men and women's clothing. Most people care a lot about fashion trends, and that influences what they buy. Now, im sure there probably could be some somewhat successful line of womens pants with reasonable pockets. I am a little surprised no business has tried to do it on a larger scale, as there obviously is some demand, but I doubt it'd sell as well as many other women's pants. This is especially true, because stuff like skinny jeans are a lot more common among women. These designs dont allow for big pockets. Ive worn men's skinny jeans before, and they had pretty small pockets. These days i only wear baggier relaxed fit jeans. Now we can discuss why certain fashion sells better than others. There obviously is some sexism involved with the culture that has festered these differences. But that ultimately is the reason why there is a difference. Its because a lot of people in general would sacrifice utility in favor of fashion and aesthetic. And due to how women's fashion is, that results in smaller pockets. Now fashion trends can change, and im sure these days a company making women's pants with bigger pockets might actually do ok. But Id imagine that it would still be less successful than more popular brands.
As a man who loves their big pockets this is a reminder: The answer is increase women's pockets, not to shrink men's or average them out. It's kind the minimum wage argument: The answer is to increase those who are lacking in the resource, not to decrease others. Edit: The fact that both of the books you found about pockets were written by women.... That says something surely. Men don't think about pockets because we have enough, but if women are talking about them that's just straight up an indication there's an issue. Like reviews on Yelp, you only talk about a thing if it's 5 stars amazing or I saw a rat in the kitchen terrible
Many pockets (especially on suits and/or women's clothing) actually have the pockets STITCHED SHUT. This is because the pocket has been designed to stay closed when you wear them, not when on the hangar. You are supposed to remove the stiches when you buy them (they use a special half stitch that is easy to rip open, but you should still use a little care). It's usually easy to spot the stitched shut pockets because they leave one corner open so you can get a finger in.
I can't wait to watch this, I dropped my phone yesterday because I forgot I was wearing women's pants and not men's pants that day. AAA. I suspect it's related to the More Perfect Union video about fast fashion and why clothes suck now. It's cheaper and easier to manufacture, as well as creating a more sleek figure. Let's find out! OMW
I love having as many pockets as possible. It's a specific criteria for when I select new jackets. I wouldn't say it's a part of my IDENTITY or anything but it's still quite important to me.
I started college at the beginning of feminism, and my History of Art teacher showed us some of these same things you explored here. •Later we got to purses on long skinny straps that would bounce off your legs and hips. I always thought that was gross. •And now there are very powerful women wearing shoes with a spiky triangular toe box, completely unlike toes! •And wearing spike heels. First, why fake being taller? And I’m very short. I can stand on an 8” footstool and still be short. Fine. But my dad was an engineer, and he taught me the math of spike heels. If the foot might be approximately 25 sq inches, a 125 lb woman would experience 5 lbs per square inch impact in flat shoes. •In a 1/4 square inch spike heel, that is an impact of 500 lbs per square inch. That is a brutal way to treat a living body. •All of these limiting, crippling styles of dress disturb me. I don’t want to condone or participate in systematic physical or social misogyny. •We’re going to have to solve climate change and a hundred other crises in the next few decades. Why would we waste our time and energy making it a commercial and social Priority (!) to waste and limit women’s energy and contributions. •Now I appreciate why my mom wore jeans and sneakers, even though she was born a hundred years ago. You go, Mom! 🙏💙✨
This is why the vast majority of the pants I've had since at least highschool were teenage boy pants. Am I a teenage boy? No. But am I barely 5'2" and in love with pockets that can carry two phones, charger, powerbank, notepad, calendar and whatever's needed for my quest of the day? You bet your ass I am. So I buy most pants in the kids section, usually sized for 13-14ish year olds. And this meant that I had decent pockets even in the early 2010s, which was the skinny jeans era! I was a so-skinny-they-are-basicaly-a-second-skin jean wearing emo AND I could carry my phone, my MP3 player, some snacks, a large pack of chewing gum, a set of keys and even my school pencilcase, if needed. I could carry a friend's phone, if they had some abysmal or non-existent, only-for-the-looks, sewn up pockets! It genuinely felt like a superpower. And now I sew some of my clothing, so I can insert as big of a pocket as I want [which usually is measured by "at least as big as my two phones, and as deep as my fingers can reach without having to bend over and look stupid"], so I can stuff a full water bottle in there as well. And apparently the work-dedicated clothes are free from this issue, because my scrubs and white coats all have a lot of pocket, on each piece of garment, so in my white coats I usually have two large pockets on my hip, one on my chest and some have a fourth, hidden one, on the inside, while my scrubs have two MASSIVE hip pockets [and I mean massive, I can fit a stethoscope there, I can fit a water bottle with rooms to spare, I normally carry a 2m long charger in one and like 5 pairs of gloves in the other, and still have tons of room], as well as three large pockets on the shirt, two on the sides and one on the chest. So when I'm in hospital, I feel like I'm wearing TARDIS, or maybe a Santa's bottomless bag.
9:35 just a little warning, you should probably avoid posting pictures of your keys on the internet, especially like that, straight down. it makes it trivial to clone realistically it's not a huge risk but better be safe than sorry
Trans guy here. Early in my transition I started wearing mens jeans to explore. It was a REVELATION. I knew men had larger pockets, but the sheer difference was staggering. Women have no idea what majesty there is in having a pair of pants that can honestly fit everything you need
You are so funny! I loved your video. Quick History: Women lost useful pockets when they lost undergarments made to support heavy skirts. That was around the 1920. The fabrics were lighter weighted and couldn't support the weight of coins in the pockets that were made of lighter weight synthetic fabrics.
I'm also just really impressed that as a novice Sabrina managed to make epic pants in just two days, I've always been daunted by a project like that but maybe I just need to go for it
maybe i'm only saying this as someone who already knew some of the history behind pockets. but it takes a real specific type of person to go to a thrift store to do some statistical analysis on the size of pockets before a single google on fashion history hahahah i'd also like to add, i feel like the skin-tight skinny jeans of the 2010s had some influence on women's pockets shrinking. the extra fabric would bunch up and look lumpy, and if you added a single credit card the outline would show against your leg, nevermind a whole phone.
@@ArchaicAnglist Well, the 1960s had a lot of other problems when it came to ideas of what was acceptable for modern women of the time. No surprise it was an issue back then. The question is moreso why it never got fixed in the more recent era when a lot of those problems women historically faced have been improving over time.
I have been buying the same style of jeans from one particular plus-size shop in Australia for decades, just because they have GREAT pockets. They stopped selling them for a few years, but thankfully brought them back by popular demand.
I'm only 5 minutes in to this video yet, but I could have told you this ten+ years ago. I'm a veteran thrift store shopper, since even long before I qualified for senior discount days. I am also a big fan of Halloween, and used to (before C19) invest time and effort into making costumes. Which means occasionally I would buy women's clothing for color or style based on a costume idea, and of course in sizes that can fit me. Most men's jeans, I can bury my hands to the wrist-bone, and most women's in sizes to fit the same person it would be unusual to get any farther than fingers all-in. [watched it through, now] you are awesome! I am entertained AND enlightened.
Hi Sabrina, thanks for the great video! The diet pocket problem on women's garments is more political and here are two pieces of history you might find interesting. During the suffragette movement, a main anti-feminism lobby point was to limit women's pockets to half-a-hand sizes, in fear of bigger pockets would enbale women carry more stones to smash windows or conceal weapons. During WWII, there were regulations to limit women's pocket to no more than one per garment, while men's pockets faced no restrictions. It is all about control.
@@TykoBrian7 That's the usual (and probably correct) explanation. Women's clothes tend to be more form-fitting, and a major part of a woman's "form" is her hips. Eliminating the pockets makes the clothes follow the shape of the hips better, so the pockets are fake or small enough to discourage their use. After all, if you see a woman that looks bulgy due to the stuff in her pockets, you won't think well of the brand that's stamped on the pants.
I haven't watched the video yet but I'm a man and I just learned how women's pants sizing works earlier this year and jesus christ you guys have it rough out there.
I know one reason many women's clothing skimps on pockets! (I am a clothing designer) The reason is that it ruins the style lines on certain styles (fitted clothing that take in account the shape and form of the waist and hips. The problem is that bulky does not sell. Women want pockets but lots of women also want (generally) to look stylish/slim (around the area pockets tend to land on the body), etc. The cut of women's clothing tends to hug the body more than men's clothing does. Also, its hard to explain, but the structure of the entire garment has to be able to support a potentially full pocket. Having a deep full pocket on a more fitted, lightweight style of pant can feel weird to wear and although the pocket is present it can be slightly useless if the garment's fit does not allow room for a full pocket. And women have been deprived so therefore it happens even when it does not need to. For the record, I am and advocate of pockets and do think many garments that *could* have pockets often don't...why not add them to dresses and skirts (especially fuller styles). I always add them when I can - though I do leave them off it I want the garment to look streamlined through the hip area.
thanks for sharing your expertise! i have a skirt that was designed with very full pockets, and it also has an abnormally tight waistband for the size, which i recently realized was a way to make sure it doesn't fall down if i'm carrying a full water bottle or a graphing calculator XD i have had that problem even just putting my phone in skirts that clearly weren't meant to hold anything substantial in the pockets (cotton knits _will_ stretch, but that doesn't mean they _should_). so i get what you mean about clothing needing to be designed around full pockets. hopefully in the future we'll see more diversity in how clothes are constructed so that people of all genders can have a variety of options for how their clothes look and function.
This is the modern reason, but not the historic reason. Women were not given pockets in clothing because they were "reliant" on their husbands to carry their money. The reliance came from control, women weren't supposed to have their own money. These days, after ww2 (which promoted practical pockets for women working in the home land), women's clothing became "more feminine" again.
I have ultra wide leg jeans made out of a thick cotton. They're meant to be worn a bit oversized, with a low/mid waist. The back pockets are massive. The front ones don't even fit all of my phone. There's really no reason but sexism for that imo.
The water bottle is the best one for me. If I can fit a water bottle in the pocket then I'm getting/keeping the pants. Nothing pisses me off more than pant pockets that can barely fit my phone.
Growing up, if I couldn't fit at least a paperback in a pocket somewhere, the outfit was a failure. Now I mostly use an eReader app on my phone, so I guess my fashion options have opened up.

Fun fact my 3 year old's jeans had full pockets of which he doesn't know how to use, but my wife's jeans had outlines of pockets lol
Even kid’s pockets have it better than women’s 😭 that’s just cruel.
As a kid I loved collecting all kinds of rocks and stuff, so he obviously needs them for his quests.

I like to call them as false or fake pockets. And they are my biggest nemesis
@iwh7 For suit Pants, that's Actually not Always incorrect. They actually Deliberately sew The pockets Shut on Some suits, To help Prevent wrinkles.

"IT HAS POCKETS!!!"
She showed off the pockets to every woman at that ceremony. I am sure the men were confused why all the women were so excited on her behalf about something so simple. But why then is something so simple, denied to us. Give us the damn pockets.
I saw another bride a few years ago do the same thing but at the alter when she pulled her personalized vows from her pockets.

"how are people buying pants on the internet for like $10??? These take so long to make!!"
Not only did Sabrina discover sexism in this video, she also discovered the rampant exploitation of workers in the garment industry.
it's a tiny bit concerning that it took them that long
We used to have MULTIPLE garment unions with tens of thousands of workers, but they all dissolved and the workers remaining in the unions were absorbed into the UFCW or UNITE in the 90's. I'm a very young Gen Xer and I remember the commercials they used to play to "Look for the Union Label" in your clothing to support American made fashion.
Also industry in general. A well paid worker can probably give you a really cheap pair of pants if they used factory tools
Also that, when you know what your doing and do it every day, you are a lot quicker at it.
For a guy who is addicted to putting my hands in pockets. The small pockets for women just seemed evil for no reason.
When my husband is looking for something on his person, basically patting himself down, I call it the "dance of the man with too many pockets". Great video 🥰
I wear cargo pants for work and it’s like a whole purse, if I accidentally put something back in the wrong pocket it’s basically vanished
Ok so Sabrina made shoes and pants. Now we need a shirt theory and a hat theory to complete the nerdy fashion designer series
She also made glasses
Training shoes as well
The shirt theory: why men take off shirts by pulling them up and over the head from the back, whereas women take of their shirts by crossing arms over the front, grabbing the hem to pull them overhead.
(Tbh there's already hypotheses about this on a Tumblr post, but I still would love Sabrina to go down the rabbit hole)

tbh i think a lot of thrift stores are used to weird customers? lots of people are thrifting to upcycle, resell, make costumes, clothe groups of people by measurements... measuring the pockets alone might be a little odd but probably doesn't look that different from people measuring clothes for fit
ive been buying mens jeans for years, not only for the baggy effect but for this exact pocket problem

I see this a lot but as someone with a big butt and thighs men’s pants have never fit me remotely well 🥲 so it’s never a feasible option for me

I do men's exclusively since I like pockets and ever since I was a kid I would tear pants just by looking at them wrong . Was shopping with my sister and found a cute pair and asked the clerk what woman's pants matched my ratio and she was so confused 😅
“How are people buying pants for $10 they’re so much work!” The way I’ve spent my whole life trying to explain this exact sentiment to people…
Someone is always getting fucked over in modern capitalism, if you don't feel it's you, it's certainly the other worker.

That's a thing called sweatshops with barely paid child labor I fear
Also fast fashion, they go together like bread and butter
And economies of scale - ya know, cutting out huge swaths of cloth based on templates and then feeding them into machines which sew along pre-determined stitch lines.

As a tailor once put it to me: "Men's clothes are designed to fit you, women's clothes are designed for you to fit in them"
Pockets with things in them would "ruin" the intended silhouette, therefore they aren't seriously engineered to put things in. It's the dumbest thing in the world.
I think that's the closest to an explanation.
But then why not have both for women?
@@rogerwilco2 but then why not buy men or unisex pants, I just buy whatever cloth fits my need, never bother if it's label for men or women.
The silhouette being ruined by real pockets is true though. Alot of Women like that silhouette. I do think they should make both though. I wonder if those loose boyfriend jeans have better pockets.
You’ve got a point, however I thrifted some men’s trousers that fit me perfectly (and a bit tight) but it’s still got pretty deep usable pockets
That's just the God's honest truth though.
When I was in high school in the late 2000s, most of the girls in my class had jeans with useable pockets. And they complained about them constantly.
"This pocket is bulging through my jeans even though there's nothing in it!"
Women to this day do the exact same thing with underwear. The whole "visible panty line" thing. The underwear ruining that silhouette is the whole reason "no show" panties were invented.
Taha being vile and pulling stuff out while Sabrina is talking is hilarious
Brother it sounds like you need a tactical vest
I don’t get the point of statchels or handbags. Backpacks are comfier and less likely to get stole. Plus they fit more stuff and are cheaper.
Pro tip: cargo pants. If your pants mostly consist of pockets, even women get a few useful ones.

ok but also: wallets for women vs. men! Women's wallets are already the size of a purse, so you need a bag for a purse for a wallet. I've been buying men's wallets for decades, and they actually do fit in my tiny pockets (unlike my phone, that sticks out half way)
fortunately, you can buy a men's wallet and have it fit your money. you cant buy men's pants and have it fit your crotch.
why are there even men or women wallets? its not like money or cards change in site in size depending on the sex
8:53 "You're saying interestingg as if I have answers." Should've been followed up with some variant of "I don't have answers, only pockets!"
Yeah, I think his answer was still in progress.
I was also thinking of a certain pocket-centered clothing company.
Where did you get those shorts? They sound amazing.
5:57 "How much are you carrying?" "Everything you need for your quests."
I need a gif of this ASAP 😂
The theory I have been running with - you can see when Taha fills his pockets what people mean by "ruining the line of the clothes" when you fill pockets. It makes clothing unflattering when you have bulky items in your pockets.
The sexism of the pocket problems is that clothes makers for men presume men can decide for themselves if they wanna make their figures look good or not, it is up the the men to decide whether or not to use the pockets. But clothes makers for women don't want their clothes seen on frumpy looking women with lumpy things in the cargo pockets.
Or perhaps so the not enough real demand for it
This is the real reason.
@@GeneralNicklesdo you have any source about the market researches you memtioned?

I love Taha just casually taking a drink and grabbing a snack straight out of his pocket
Melissa’s snap back with fitting a full litre bottle lmao
I have to say, Sabrina, that your home-made trousers/pants really look extraordinarily good on you! The colour, cut and fit are much more flattering than the jeans or sweats you usually wear. I think you should look into vintage fashion even more. In any case, a great result and keep up the good work!
Definitely! At this point, she has been a beginner at at so much random stuff that it's no longer beginner luck, it's just elite beginner skills and I believe she could for sure make whatever everyday item she needs
Yeah 10/10 fashion would go on a quest with
I thought this too. Are suffragette pants back?
Yeah, that's an obscenely good result for someone's first pair of pants. Even given the baggy fit is more forgiving. I didn't get the knack of sewing the fly front until many pairs in. Still don't have it tbh!
I hope she gets good use out of them long after this video goes up.
Cargo pants FTW. Measuring tape, utility knife, pencil, keys, phone, sunglass box, the possibilities are endless.
It is nice to go places with your passport securely in your cargo pocket, not getting all sweaty and bent by the hip or picked out the back.
@7:00 he wasnt done either (well maybe with those pants), there are still the 2 back pockets and the hoodie pocket. and if he has a coat those also have 2+ pockets. We have pockets everywhere and its great.
I have a literal BABY who has pockets in his pants sometimes. WHAT DOES HE NEED TO PUT IN THERE??? 😂
Dirt and rocks, duh! 😆😆😆
who said this is for him?
you are the one carrying him and the pockets made it convenient for you to put items into your baby.
pretty clever actually, turning a baby into a purse.
@@nohorsesavi😂 I laughed so much, I can’t, the latest fashion, baby purse, like the cat backpacks but in reverse with a baby
E V E R Y T H I N G
@@nohorsesavi If you think about it, this is actually a great anti-theft technique. A lot more people would steal from a purse than from a baby.
18:28 yep. because sweatshops, fast fashion, and consumers conditioned to expect items for a low price
yup there is an uncomfortable amount of slavery in the clothing industry. I try hard not to rely on probable slavery, but I don't really have the budget to afford ethically sourced clothing
Thanks capitalism!
And a destroyed "middle class" that can't afford products that aren't made in sweatshops
@@JosiahWendell-sr8visame😭. I can't afford anything better than fast fashion.
I've been saying it for years. The first company to make pants for women with actual pockets will win all the money
Uniqlo's wide pants / work pants have deep pockets... I haven't found any other brand like it so far.
Try Kavu!
Here's a million dollar idea. Would you like to be our shareholder 😉
Some companies do tho, people just don't care enough
Frrrr
23:00 you can also just make pockets and replace the ones on women's pants
Which I have been doing. It's a bit finicky but so very worth it.
She showed she’s done that in the beginning of the video too
Would it be easier to cannibalize the pockets from thrifted menswear?
The possibilities for both practicality and creativity in sewing are *chef's kiss*
My assumption going into this video was that pants producers cared more about the silhouette, and I guess that wasn't too off-base? I stopped carrying a purse around college after temporarily losing it IN MY OWN CAR. Now, I just carry a thin fabric wallet. I mourned having to downsize a little, but I'm not carrying the worry that I'll misplace a bag. I kind of like winter simply because I get to use coat pockets instead of trying to shove my phone into a pocket that was clearly not designed for it. Maybe I'll have to make myself a pair of external pockets for the summer - those are actually rad and I can't lose something that's physically tied to me! (I would hope, lol)
Great video, as per usual!
'guys theres so much room in here' I WAS LAUGHING THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE VID LOL BUT THIS HAD ME CACKLING RIGHT AT THE END thanks team!
"Why not buy a purse?" Wanna carry a purse around the house when all you need to store is your phone?
And all my coats have inside pockets, too. 🥰
I love Sabrina’s energy in this video. Really gives a sense of her identity
Torrid, a women’s plus size store in Canada and the US, is the one women’s clothing brand that has amazing pockets. It has completely changed the game for me over the past 10 years. Almost everything they sell now has very large pockets, including dresses and yoga pants. You can buy a wedding dress from Torrid and it will have pockets.
thanks for the rec, good to know!
Omg why have I never heard of this channel before? If you need me, I'll be watching every video you've ever made!!! Great content❤
I am a guy and I bought a pair of thrift shop women's jeans that was left on the men's rack by mistake. I put them on recently and I was like "Why are these pockets so small? And why do my legs look so shapely ohhhhhh"
Its really dumb, girls are getting robbed.
Also balance beam on men’s might cause some unpleasant injuries
I've been waiting for a fully in-depth analysis of this issue. Absolutely delivered with this video! Amazing data analysis and research work!

Miniscule or no pockets exist in women's dresses and skirts. Worse yet is sometimes a decorative flap evoking a pocket is placed where one should be. There's a trend to include pockets on bridal gowns, too! (Where else would you place your tissues?)
I sew. I add human-sized pockets on all of my dresses and skirts, even if not on the pattern.
Taha: this video is about what makes you procrastinate!

I love y'all's channel so much. The rotation of videos between the three of you in combination with the like zoom/facetime calls mixed in is so lovely. I feel like sharing between the three of you gets to show the research you do, as well as the sheer nerdy excitement of sharing with friends new things you learned.
Wow how have I never found this channel before... what a great video!!
Sabrina, I haven't laughed this much in a hot minute. You truly have reached the height of luxury with all your pockets!!!! :)
Women get better looking pants with zero utility while men get good pockets but the usual dull color palette and standard cut
I ended up learning about the pocket problem after buying a few women's pants
It's just because men value utility over aesthetic
They're functional.
I don't think men buy pants to showoff
I wouldn't say it's a part of my IDENTITY or anything but it's still quite important to me.
i was struggling to put my phone in my pocket, then i got a notification abt this video
well played sabrina
8:05 I'm bursting into laughter at this point lmaooo.
9:35 just a little warning, you should probably avoid posting pictures of your keys on the internet, especially like that, straight down. it makes it trivial to clone
realistically it's not a huge risk but better be safe than sorry
Trans guy here. Early in my transition I started wearing mens jeans to explore. It was a REVELATION. I knew men had larger pockets, but the sheer difference was staggering. Women have no idea what majesty there is in having a pair of pants that can honestly fit everything you need
Women do because many women wear men's trousers. When we don't need to dress up at least (and sometimes even when we do).
I was already wearing men's clothing before I knew I was trans and man.. I love DEEP pockets
If they're not in my pocket I'll lose them
When I was a kid I used to walk to school listening to music on tape, and I'd carry SO MANY tapes in my pockets that I'd clank as I walked.
i can fit my whole switch in a mens pants pocket. AN ENTIRE GAMING SYSTEM! if im lucky, i can fit a stick of lipbalm in a womens pants pocket.
me casually walking into metro and pulling out a 600pages larger-format book out of my leather coat inside-chest pocket
I always add pockets to clothing I have bought and sometimes just make clothes from scratch😊 with as many pockets as I wish.
You are so funny! I loved your video. Quick History: Women lost useful pockets when they lost undergarments made to support heavy skirts. That was around the 1920. The fabrics were lighter weighted and couldn't support the weight of coins in the pockets that were made of lighter weight synthetic fabrics.
I'm also just really impressed that as a novice Sabrina managed to make epic pants in just two days, I've always been daunted by a project like that but maybe I just need to go for it
maybe i'm only saying this as someone who already knew some of the history behind pockets. but it takes a real specific type of person to go to a thrift store to do some statistical analysis on the size of pockets before a single google on fashion history hahahah
i'd also like to add, i feel like the skin-tight skinny jeans of the 2010s had some influence on women's pockets shrinking. the extra fabric would bunch up and look lumpy, and if you added a single credit card the outline would show against your leg, nevermind a whole phone.
Women's and girls' pants have been absolute crap when it comes to pockets since at least the 1960s, in my experience.
4 videos in the last month we eating good
I have been buying the same style of jeans from one particular plus-size shop in Australia for decades, just because they have GREAT pockets. They stopped selling them for a few years, but thankfully brought them back by popular demand.
18:24 "it has been an hour, I still don't have pants" Were you actually expecting to be able to sew a whole pair of pants, as a novice, in an hour??
Love that at 14 mins in she just becomes Taha. All the things go in the pockets!
It's more than 50y ago, so nope. It's just cause women like style and more slim pants, so there is no space for huge pockets
@sketchychillandchillWTF are you talking about😂
@@TykoBrian7 That's the usual (and probably correct) explanation.
And control is rooted in fear. I can't believe how much BS we've had to put up with historically because men are afraid of us.
that's a crazy story. but yea it was 50 yr ago so I don't tink that is the reason for rn. But maybe that resulted in the situation
This is such a great video. You put so much effort into it. AND you solved a question I've asked for years!
The ending was chaotically beautiful storytelling to counter Taha's continuos casual pocket flex. Well done
I transitioned and all I got was pocketsessss
There's really no reason but sexism for that imo.
dude putting a whole purse worth of items into his pockets was absolutely gold content
The water bottle is the best one for me. If I can fit a water bottle in the pocket then I'm getting/keeping the pants. Nothing pisses me off more than pant pockets that can barely fit my phone.
i used to do that in elemtary school with the water bottles from lunch
Growing up, if I couldn't fit at least a paperback in a pocket somewhere, the outfit was a failure. Now I mostly use an eReader app on my phone, so I guess my fashion options have opened up.
