Happy St Patrick’s day! Really enjoying your videos, I’m a 70 yo and completely new to piano (~5years). Your vids resonate very well with my journey. You should expect many more views. Doug
This video highlights so many important things about how we perceive ourselves when playing. As for me, l do record myself , but not as often as l'm supposed to. I'd like to participate in an open-mic, but my fear to forget everything when playing terrifies me.
I so much agree! It has helped me so much on Gymnopedie to get the melody arch sound right. I couldn't listen to it while playing because I needed all my concentration on the accompaniment chords first. Rewatching my videos helped me get a better understanding of how chords and melody work together and where exactly I get stuck and it starts sounding chopped.
Thank you so much for this video. I recorded myself after my first lesson for a couple of weeks and it was very painful to watch back. 3 years later I started to video myself again to build my confidence because I wouldn't play infont of anyone. I played for my sister last week. Still a long way to go. Going to keep videoing myself. Love your video and it shows how important it is. THANK YOU.
Thanks a lot for your authenticity, Leah! Your videos are so supporting, encouraging and motivating! I wonder why my different teachers don‘t know how to teach practising piano like you do! ;) I appreciate your way of teaching! Thank you.
Hi Leah, I have been recording myself since the start of my piano adventure last year, but only when I thought the piece I was learning was kind of passable and not really listening to what I recorded. However, I have been following your advice. Every few days, after my practice session, I record myself and compare it to see how if I am making any progress on the piece I am learning. I then read the score when listening so as to see where I am going wrong and then concentrate only on that part and I am improving a lot. As always, thank you for all your videos and your hard work to make better pianist out of us. By the way, next week is St. Patrick. I take this opportunity to wish you a Happy St. Patrick’s Day with all the possible blessings.
Just saw your video, having just finished a practice (and recording session) to get ready for Saturday's audacious session. I was recording primarily to help rid myself of the nervous feeling due to having an audience. Although I wasn't very satisfied with any of the multiple recordings, it really does show you areas where you can improve. We'll soon know if it did any good for the nerve endings! Jackie D. '
Hi Leanne, the easiest way is with your phone camera - if you already know how to take photos, you can swipe along the bottom of the screen to find the video option. Then just prop the phone somewhere such as the end of the piano, and hit record. You might need to reverse the camera if you want to see your piano in the picture, in which case just look for the icon of the camera with two curved arrows inside. But if you just want the sound, it doesn’t matter where it’s pointing. Good luck! 😊
Leah I can play at home but in my lessons it all falls apart. I play wrong notes and say stupid things when reading even though I know the notes, my teacher is lovely. Any tips?
A very common problem, Louise, when we feel under pressure, even with a friendly teacher, our brains seem to freeze! You can improve things with the practice tips in the link below, but also look for my video about stage fright as this is essentially what’s happening 😊 Learn New Music Fast With These Piano Practice Techniques! ruclips.net/video/0PETzRI77YM/видео.html
Funnily, someone recorded me on stage without knowing. I had no idea I was listening to my own performance. Until then I thought it was really good. When I found out it was mine, I was screaming in panic and found faults everywhere. I hid in my room for I think a few hours. 😅
Try and stay with your first reaction and ask yourself why you panicked when you realised who you were listening to! It’s a very common reaction, by the way, but we can learn to be more objective about our performances if we are first of all as kind to ourselves as we are to others. It takes time but your self awareness is an important first step! 💙

Fellow senior pianist here. I am 75 and restarted about 30 month ago. My progress is somewhat slow in my opinion but I love the journey!
I don’t only enjoy learning from..but I also enjoy looking and listening to you..Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge.

Great tip! Once I started recording myself, my playing improved significantly.
Recently discovered your channel - I’m just starting to learn piano aged 46 and find your videos so helpful, you are a brilliant teacher
Thank you so much - best of luck with your piano journey! 🥰
Absolutely! Recording myself helped me recognise when I'd change tempo, go too slow or do hesitations!
Love your knowledge, logic & wisdom Leah. You’ve given me that nudge I needed to brave recording.
Go for it, Elizabeth! 👏👏👏🥰

You’re welcome! 🥰
May I ask you how I could download your practice workbook? I tried to do but it doesn‘t seem to work. Thanks a lot, Leah! 🙂
Thank you for this! I’m gonna do it! 🙂🙏🏼❤

Thanks Viviana! 🇮🇪☘️
I will try this tonight and see what happens. Scary. Thank you for all your advice you give us.
Both parts of this are true: (a) it's hard to face the reality; (b) it helps a great deal.
I’m learning piano and guitar and recorded myself- hated the process and results but your advice is really good! I’ll get back to recording!!! 😂
Thank you.
Ima do it

Pavarotti said that each person is their best critique, others may be afraid to be honest. A typical recorder however, many times will flatten sounds.
Great advice.
Can you do a video on how to record yourself. I can’t find out from anyone how to do it

The microphone doesn’t lie!
totally agree...👏
so true 👍
Thank you. I will try this, but you are right. I am my own worst critic.

It’s my opinion of listening to myself I’m worried about!! 😂
I know the feeling 🤣🤣
my objective is to not be objective about myself
Yes, we are our own worst critics…!
The way for me to remove personal bias, I also must place a period of time between the recording & the playback..
(6 months works ha)
