"Get out of the way and let..." is not a thing that happens in politics. New parties come up and tear the old ones to pieces. If you want one, you'd better build it. The problem is that the left will stay home on election days if you don't give them any good options. The right will vote for a cucumber if it has an R beside its name. The left needs something to actually fire them up. Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves as not as exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires. - John Steinbeck
There are three things that are very hard; steel, diamonds, and to know one's self - Benjamin Franklin (allegedly). The Democrats have, since the 1990s, been running on corporate-friendly status quo and are not cognizant of the fact that neoliberalism, globalization, and faux meritocracy rhetoric is just not working for so many people. I agree, in large part, with Bernie Sanders and the Progressivist wing of the party: entrenched, life-long Democrats are unwilling to truly embrace a deep reflection on their core values and to offer real, substantial change for the American people. I've said since 2016 that Trump is not THE problem (as if when he disappears the racism, sexism, ignorance, hatred, bigotry, and political violence will just melt away), but merely a symptom of the root problem; that the system is corrupt and the American people are opting for destruction over restoration. Why defend "Democracy" if American political and social systems mean I get to struggle day-to-day? Why defend "Liberty" when the jobs my families thrived on disappear and my town dries up and dies off? Why worry about overt morality and pearl-clutching gasps in public while The System does that, or worse, behind closed doors? The long and short of it is this: I think Trump and MAGA are a horrible movement, their messaging and their attitude is repugnant to me, I donated and voted against them in 2016, 2020, and 2024. But to not acknowledge that real, radical change needs to happen is to shut one's eyes and hope (as Joe Biden did, as Nancy Pelosi did) that everything will be better once this aberration is gone is to set the stage for the next, more competent successor. Change is inevitable; what is not is how we address (or fail to address) that change
Good points. As a society, there needs to be some collective soul searching. Even when times are difficult, the immediate reaction shouldn't be scapegoating, cruelty, and yielding rights because supposedly that'll help.

I'm a 'white' (totally unscientific term of course, but that's how maga voters "self-identify", or whatever..) southerner from the country- I grew up in the "Mayberry" traditional rural America that a lot of folks claim they want to "go back to" but know nothing of and aren't even a pale imitation of. I grew up among the "Silent" and "Greatest" generations with my grandparents. And I tell you- not only does maga not stand for the values of those people- they would be disgusted-- ESPECIALLY the rural-agrarian crowd. Know why? Because our values were fundamentally *COMMUNAL*. Just listen to the lyrics to "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" for F's sake "city folks lookin' in the backa limousines; lotta folks acting like that's some mighty King...." We did not believe that life was about money or chasing wealth and fame and we DID believe in helping our neighbors and kindness to strangers *REGARDLESS* what our priors were- REGARDLESS. In other words, someone could be horribly prejudiced against immigrants from a certain place or whatever, but that didn't mean they felt entitled to be rude or threatening to a stranger for no reason; they might even help someone they knew personally try to get a job or whatever even if they did it thinking "well he's one of the good ones so it's OK" -- they had FIRST-PRINCIPLES and VIRTUES that OVERRODE their prejudicies and biases. My grandfather was perfectly honest about the fact that he thought of African Americans as intellectually inferior when he was a young man and he was taught that, but nothing about that stopped him from being furious and disgusted when he found out his brother was trying to fiddle their Black workers out of some of their wages, taking advantage of the fact that many were illiterate. In his mind even if he thought of himself as "superior" that was not a license rob or harm people-- if anything it was considered the *OPPOSITE*. Groups like the FreeMasons were white-supremacist patriarchal societies and yet they were often the COUNTER-balance to the Klan because their whole ethos was one of "with great power comes great responsibility" where they thought of their precious pale peckers as a sacred trust from God- not an entitlement to be flouted about just for fun [and yes out west the masons WERE the klan basically, but on the east coast it was different and the western elements were the criminals and exiles and scoundrels of the east, basically]. They would have seen MAGA for exactly what they are- nihilistic degenerates who don't even know their neighbor's names, spend all day in front of a screen, and do nothing of service to others yet feel entitled to talk down to or take from others just for a cheap thrill. NO underlying values or ethics or beliefs AT ALL.
P.S. They WILL *ABSOLUTELY* overcome their prejudices and pull the lever for a woman or a person of color *IF it's a person who seems GENUINE and makes them feel seen and heard and offers a MORAL vision and a CLEAR program to improve their MATERIAL conditions!!!* There was polling done around 1950 which showed that if Elanor Roosevelt had run for President; there's an excellent chance she could have won in 195freakin2. Alas- she could have got away with being a woman-- but she didn't run because being Gay was a bridge too far and the forerunner to J.D. Vance-- J.E. Hoover; unfortunately had the evidence to prove it....
Good points. Most in these older generations would be fuming at what passes for a public servant these days, especially maga. Those folks look at politics as their personal combo of grievance gotcha and money train that'll drop some loot their way.
I mean, It compounds, though. That idea of "intellectual superiority" was allowed to continue to fester due to the attack on education and the switch from covering news properly and informatively into the mad cash grabs of bias and propaganda, and it twisted it into more than just "intellectually superior" which is flawed concept that shouldn't be allowed to go unchallenged. Your Grandpa felt that way due to ignorance and instead of it ever being addresses properly it has now morphed into other generations. Now, teaching about racism and slavery is somehow an attack against white people. Sure, your Grandpa had some principles about workers rights, but we have to understand that just because your Grandpa had the minimum of principles, that doesn't mean the next person's grandpa did. I'm not trying to knock your GrandParents, but it's wild to overlook that someone thinks someone else is inferior just because you are against them getting paid less. I'm from the south, too, and a big part of the problem is centered on the destruction of genuine Education and the switch From news to the Fear Base Propaganda factories that want to pretend that someone like Trump ISN'T an extremist. Ultimately, it isn't any ONE specific thing like I said, it compounds, but the problem was that people like your Grandpa were allowed to continue thinking they were intellectually superior. It morphed over the generations into something more extreme, and that is due to news and educational failings.
On that note, about the "propaganda". The right's methods aren't consistent, complicated, nuanced or sophisticated. In fact they're dated, repetitive, simplistic and transparent. Its the viewers who are very gullible and incapable of critical thought or self reflection. Both parties constantly cut education at both the federal and state levels. This is by the ruling class's design. You are not producing enough capable people. The LCD of 'Merica is underground.

"First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season." Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection. I had hoped that the white moderate would understand that law and order exist for the purpose of establishing justice and that when they fail in this purpose they become the dangerously structured dams that block the flow of social progress." - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

They elected him.
Two points: 1. Dem party being as flawed as it is (for the most part) a testament on the first-past-a-post election system. Only in this system can you have AOC and Manchin in the same party. In reality, both Dem and Rep party should break up into more parties and thus offer real choices. 2. I love chocolate, I hate eggnog and sh!t is unimaginable to consume. So, if I must eat and I am offered only eggnog and sh!t, I'm going for eggnog!
Sitting out the presidential election doesn’t hold the system accountable when the winner can get their mandate from less than a third of eligible voters. In this broken system, we should still exercise our civic duty and vote without the illusion that we are giving our consent to the party and candidate who we vote for. The presidential election is about choosing the enemy we wish to fight. I feel like the language of protest voters and non-voters is still framed by misconceptions of the presidential electoral system.

Sorry but in Germany between 1933 and 1945 many other groups where victims of the Naziregime. There where, the communists, socialists, union leaders and known union workers, some critical church people from both main religiouns, some minor special religous groups, LGBTQ people,Gypsies, pacifists , critical humans from all sorts of branches in art, i cannot think of any more at the moment, but believe me there are. oh yes, polish and russian people ,because they where classified as subhumans. Many of these persons were killed in concentration camps , not always killed by gas, but by work,no healthcare, unhygenic conditions, hunger or torture.

What the Dems really need to do is get out of the way and let an actually progressive party work instead of just taking up space being RNC Lite.
I second that idea.. Unfortunately the corporate Democratic donors would never allow it. Mega Corporations and Billionaires are who control the Democratic party, their prosperity comes by way of the average American struggling.
"Get out of the way and let..." is not a thing that happens in politics. New parties come up and tear the old ones to pieces. If you want one, you'd better build it.
Apart from that, America is *very* right-wing, much more than most European countries. A truly progressive party would not appeal to many. I hope I'm wrong.
@@EdwardLindonlook at opinion polling. Almost every left wing issue polls 60-80%. Bernie Sanders still polls as the most popular politician in the country among independents. The problem is that the left will stay home on election days if you don't give them any good options. The right will vote for a cucumber if it has an R beside its name. The left needs something to actually fire them up.
Remember, Bernie Sanders won most of the open primaries where independents could also vote, he lost closed primaries and caucus races where only certain people were allowed to vote. If all the primaries had been open, no amount of DNC cheating and collusion would have stopped him.
@@EdwardLindon Progressive economic policies are appealing across most of the American electorate, including a not-insignificant slice of the Republican electorate. As Americans are also the most propagandized people on Earth, you need good branding. If you call Universal Healthcare Programs "Freedom Doctors" and call the GOP a bunch of pedos and zealots to put them on the defensive whenever they accuse you of being a """socialist,""" you're going to win the hearts and minds of most people.
They won't get the monied backers because the oligarchs control the mainstream political parties and the Russians control the Green Party.

Well said👏👏👏👏👏
Good points.

Well said.
The obvious reasons are being ignored, it was propaganda vs policy and propaganda won
The Equal Time Doctrine was sure rolling in its grave.
On that note, about the "propaganda". The right's methods aren't consistent, complicated, nuanced or sophisticated. In fact they're dated, repetitive, simplistic and transparent.
Its the viewers who are very gullible and incapable of critical thought or self reflection.

The Literacy Crisis in the U.S. is Deeply Concerning-and Totally Preventable
That any child, let alone the majority of children, go to school without being taught to read is deeply concerning.
The National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP), “the nation’s report card,” showed that not even half (43%) of fourth graders in the U.S. scored at or above a proficient level in reading. And for marginalized students, the numbers are much worse: just 17% of Black students, 21% of Latino students, 11% of students with disabilities, and 10% of multilingual learners can read proficiently by fourth grade. -edtrust
Literacy's a spectrum but the 50 year attack on American public education doesn't help.
Remember, we tried head start, then no child left behind. Which is it?

For people who want a simple explanation for why the election went a certain way, there is a concept but it is tricky to tap into. Voters need to be activated to engage. How you do it can take many forms, but gotta strike the right rhythm/energy and feel real enough. Obama was great at this; regardless his flaws. Bernie is pretty good at it, too.
@@RUclipsUserAnon Bernie and Obama are tactics of the past. They didn’t have RUclips channels radicalizing potential voters. Kamala could have called for a ceasefire and still lost this race. Yeah, I’m a thorough progressive. And I voted Kamala. But it infuriated me that she pandered to the Cheneys and Sykes’ exclusively for the last month of the campaign. Progressives need to be excited to vote, too. People need to acknowledge Kamala made a lot of mistakes and was never a strong candidate to begin with.
Kamala didn't have enough time to develop this. But she did get there at the end with her impressive speech at the Ellipse.

I had hoped that the white moderate would understand that law and order exist for the purpose of establishing justice and that when they fail in this purpose they become the dangerously structured dams that block the flow of social progress."

Sitting out the presidential election doesn’t hold the system accountable when the winner can get their mandate from less than a third of eligible voters. In this broken system, we should still exercise our civic duty and vote without the illusion that we are giving our consent to the party and candidate who we vote for.
