i can relate....a working player singer songwriter all my long life.....the days are long gone when you could play what inspires you...nobody listens to a 'local'.....i would never announce when i would do my songs....the mindless drunks in the audience trying to pull some girl or guy and screaming browneyed girl or sweet home alabama...i quit playing bars 4 years ago...glad i did,i at least can keep my pride and dignity....................could say a lot more.........but no one is listening
Everything is free now That's what they say Everything I ever done Gotta give it away Someone hit the big score They figured it out That we're gonna do it anyway Even if doesn't pay [Verse 1] I can get a tip jar Gas up the car And try to make a little change Down at the bar Or I can get a straight job I've done it before I never minded working hard It's who I'm working for [Chorus] Everything is free now That's what they say Everything I ever done Gotta give it away Someone hit the big score They figured it out That I'm gonna do it anyway Even if doesn't pay [Verse 2] Every day I wake up Hummin' a song But I don't need to run around I just stay home And sing a little love song My love, to myself If there's something that you want to hear You can sing it yourself [Chorus] 'Cause everything is free now That what I said No one's got to listen to These words in my head Someone hit the big score They figured it out That we're gonna do it anyway Even if doesn't pay
Damn Bro... perfection...... the jewel meant it this way... I think " Gillian Welch ", came from around the Gem City in western Ohio ( Yellow Springs ) EVERYTHING IS FREE NOW. She does also a beautiful live performance, singing her own words, in Her head. Thanks to both of these artists...
I just want to say a Father John Misty it's an honor to hear you sing this awesome song you are a phenomenal musician and keep up the good work bro it's a pleasure to hear your voice Amen brother💯😎👍
It’s so strange, even though I know this song may be about the music bus, I’ve always heard it as a cynical Call out of christianity, “everything is free now, everything I’ve ever done, gonna give it away. Someone hit the big score, etc. like JC is a lottery ticket to Heaven. Lol. How vein and stupid ppl are. In light of the truth, it doesn’t really matter what you do If you do what you love, and if that involves sleeping out every night and counting the waves and playing music- then you hit the big score, peace.
@@floatinspaceboy No, the closest stop on the tour for me was a 10 hour drive. Wish she'd do another leg further north. I have seen her sing it live in encores at a few full band shows though.
Courtney’s version is amazing. The original is amazing. This is amazing. They’re all great artists and it’s a hell of a piece of songwriting from Gillian.
We can appreciate both you know. This song has been covered by 100 artist, they are all different in their own right. It's not a competition, it's a homage.
THE Busker's Anthem par excellence beautifully rendered. Huge love and respect to all those out there on the streets living this truth.

I've listened to this version a dozen times now. Great song, but this vocal is extraordinary.
The elegance of Gillian Welch's art is simplicity. This version respects her vision.
This guy is good at covers
This is probably the greatest written song I've ever heard and Father John Misty's cover greatly enhances the stellar writing
check out the Holmes Brothers version.
I think so , Bro
Recently heard this on 105.5 FM, “The Colorado Sound.” Great song
Everything is free now
That's what they say
Everything I ever done
Gotta give it away
Someone hit the big score
They figured it out
That we're gonna do it anyway
Even if doesn't pay
[Verse 1]
I can get a tip jar
Gas up the car
And try to make a little change
Down at the bar
Or I can get a straight job
I've done it before
I never minded working hard
It's who I'm working for
[Chorus]
Everything is free now
That's what they say
Everything I ever done
Gotta give it away
Someone hit the big score
They figured it out
That I'm gonna do it anyway
Even if doesn't pay
[Verse 2]
Every day I wake up
Hummin' a song
But I don't need to run around
I just stay home
And sing a little love song
My love, to myself
If there's something that you want to hear
You can sing it yourself
[Chorus]
'Cause everything is free now
That what I said
No one's got to listen to
These words in my head
Someone hit the big score
They figured it out
That we're gonna do it anyway
Even if doesn't pay

Nice cover, man. I love Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. You can't love one without the other, it seems (:
Hands down the best and true
Brilliant
What is that awesome organ tone
Hammond B-3
It's not what you say, it's how you say it.
To think he posted this without credence to the original writer chills me. Thinking is not knowing
Oh god I wish there were a banjo in there too….
Oh my goodness
Music business has been stealing from the artists for 100 years, it’s. Sad this beautiful song sounds like a lament
Thanks jake johnson
Does anyone know what this song is about?
The struggles of producing music and not getting paid $$

My favorite G.W. song. You sing it beautifully.
Holy shit. Thanks for this interpretation.
Courtney Barnett does it way better.
Patrick Hawkinson were you at the show last night? She covered it. Unreal. Cried and cried lol.

@@dkes53 Courtney and Misty are actually good friends. Perhaps one inspired the other to cover the song?
This is an abomination. Welch is a true artist. FJM is a photo opt to get Spotify plays. Everyone, please go listen to Welch.
