    Thanks Greg. This is very informative and will definitely share it with my contacts. I have always felt public health is largely misunderstood by health professionals, often thinking their role is clinical. I believe all clinicians have a partial public health role and we need to articulate what public health means for everyone to understand and do their part.

    Thank you for your video and for simplifying something so seemingly complicated.
    I remember disliking the statistical/mathematical part of the public health course I took in university. I am nevertheless interested in understanding broader health dynamics. How much actual calculating / use of statistical programs is there in your daily job.
    Is there a field work component to public health or do you look at large systems mostly in the form of numbers and papers ?

    • @gregmartin
      @gregmartin  8 лет назад +1

      +Doktor Gonzo Great question. Actually it depends entirely on you. There are lots of career paths in public health that don't involve looking at numbers and data. Trust me, if you don't like to work with numbers, you're not alone. You might be interested in the day to day implementation of public health projects, or getting involved with human rights advocacy or perhaps anthropology or something along those lines. The list goes on and on.. Good luck.

    • @gregmartin
      @gregmartin  9 лет назад

      Thanks for your comment Natasja Pieterse - I can't say that I know a lot about community psychology. That said, I did work in psychiatry for a while and I can tell you that the role of psychologists who manage patients at a community level is extremely important. Mental illness is often not recognised in terms of the huge contribution to the burden of disease that it makes. Keeping patients well in the community (and out of hospital) is extremely important.

    Do you get to do a lot of programming with R and python? :) I am working as a doctor and I really miss the more scientific aspects of my earlier education - especially the fact that my strengths really have always been with maths, physics, chemistry - I also love to play around with python when I have free time. - Maybe public health could be for me? I also spend a ton of time deepening my understanding of economics and would love to get into the space of health care economics escpecially where this relates to the New Zealand medical communities very crappy taste in medical software - and terrible communication between different IT systems - wastes a lot of doctors and nurses time and puts patients at risk IMO - worthy area to invest and improve. ?Would public health be a good place to maybe make my own special career niche?

    • @gregmartin
      @gregmartin  8 лет назад +2

      Hi there - YES - Public Health desperately needs people with your skills and interests. You'll love it. I'm actually learning R at the moment (and loving it). In fact, I may have some questions about R than I'd like to run past you if you have the time. Anyway - yes, you can certainly make a niche for yourself in public health with your set of interests and skills.

      Hi Sara M. - In terms of you getting more involved with public health, there are a few things that you could do. You could consider studying a Masters in Public Health following your medical degree. Alternatively, many countries have Public Health as one of the clinical specialities that you can pursue. Re "health system", we're currently doing a review of Health Systems on This Week in Global Health (go to www.twigh.org) I hope that helps. Greg

    Hi dr. Greg, thank you for the video, really informative and easy to understand. I'm getting an MPH right now. I want to ask something. Nowadays it seems the professionals from Epidemiology and Public Health are saying the same definition and objective between them, that is like what you are saying, to understand and to act. I am told that an epidemiologist also look for solution to a problem and a public health officer also research and survey for diseases. I want to ask what exactly the real difference between Epidemiology and Public Health at this time? Thanks.

    • @gregmartin
      @gregmartin  5 лет назад

      Hi Rovels - that's an extremely astute observation that you've made and an interesting question. You are right - there is a huge overlap between epidemiology and public health. In fact, I often call public health, "applied epidemiology". In general, epidemiology describes the magnitude and distribution of disease (and the causes of disease). It also considers the relationship between exposures and outcomes. Public health takes that information and asks the question, "so what?". Public Health uses epidemiology to enact change that will impact on population health. Does that make sense?

    • @RovelsIroth
      @RovelsIroth 5 лет назад

      Yes, it makes sense, especially the term "applied epidemiology". Can we use epidemiology skills for activities or aspects other than health, or it is actually straight for health? Because I can see now that somehow public health experts are trying to overlap and take the epidemiology practice role too while the epidemiology expert probably can't do vice versa.

    Is global health and public health more or less the same?
    I am planning to do a masters in global health. Would you recommend this path?

    • @gregmartin

      Hi there - yes, they are more or less the same thing with a slightly different emphasis. Global health is an application of public health but looking at issues that affect multiple countries.

      Dear Anekew - thanks for the question. It does depend on what you want to do down the line. If you are interested in the application of microbiology to the global health space then I would say its an excellent route.

    I'm an engineer who is interested in public health. I had a serious burn injury that allowed me to have close contact with clinicians. I'm interested in epidemiology and policy. Will I be able to transition well without that clinical background?

    • @gregmartin
      @gregmartin  7 лет назад

      Hi Tofu - thanks for the message. I'm sorry to hear that you had a serious burn injury (I hope the you are okay). Yes indeed, you will be able to transition well without a clinical background. Trust me, public health desperately needs people like you. Engineers are excellent at problem solving (and many public health problems need practical solutions). Engineers are also VERY good at quantitative analysis - there is a HUGE need for people like you Tofu. I'm looking forward to seeing you in the public health space.

    • @gregmartin
      @gregmartin  9 лет назад +1

      Rosalie Tan thanks for the question Rosalie Tan - essentially, Global Health his a subset of Public Health that considers health at a global level (in other words, health issues that are not confined to a single nation state). I can't get into too much detail in this discussion box but will perhaps make a video about this sometime. Thanks for the question.

      Dear Mohammed - thanks for the question. There are many possible areas of work that you could get involved with. Health protection (controlling outbreaks of infectious disease), Health Promotion (promoting behaviour change to prevent disease) and Health Services Planning. Good luck!! Hope this answered your question.

      Hi gborowme bangura - its an interesting question. 10 years from today there is likely to be an increasing burden of non-communicable disease (due to changing demographic profiles) and health issues related to climate change. We may also see more problems related to drug resistance (e.g. MDR TB etc.). Hope that helps.

      Yes indeed. Many people go straight into public health. Depending on where it is that you qualified, you might want to do your internship first and get registered as a doctor (which is a useful thing to have)

      Global Health with Greg Martin hey! I’m also graduating from medicine this month. Why do you feel the internship is important? I’m confused between doing it to get registered vs saving that year and going straight for the MPH. If I know end goal is MPH, how beneficial can the internship be?

    Thank you for this video!! It´s a good summary to explain the field of PH.
    BUT unfortunalty it`s not right if you say "More money I put in the Health Care System more capacity the HCS has" (5:03)
    Look at the Outcomes of the HCS of the US - the most expensive in the world. Despite of the money they put in they have not more capacity or better outcomes in morbidity or mortality. Social Inequality is the magic word i missed in your video. The gap between economic interests and public interests influence the intentions of PH.

    • @gregmartin
      @gregmartin  7 лет назад

      Hi there - you make a good point. Its certainly not the case that there is an automatic positive relationship between funding and healthcare capacity. However, in many parts of the world, the lack of available financial resources is the overwhelming bottleneck in terms of the countries ability to scale up services. Under those circumstances, more investment in health services is an essential step to scaling up delivery.

      Mark Musah Jr thanks for the question. A good place to start is by doing a Masters in Public Health (if you are in a position to). It's also a good idea to get some experience (you could for example volunteer to help a local NGO). Good luck!! 😀

      +Global Health with Greg Martin Thank you sir... but I just finish with high school... what are the better steps...?

    • @gregmartin
      @gregmartin  7 лет назад

      If you've just finished school you can do one of two things. You could try to get some experience straight away (perhaps doing some volunteer work or getting an entry level position in an NGO) or do a undergraduate degree. If you want to study at this point, I suggest that you find an aspect of global health that you're interested in and study something that will broaden your knowledge base in that area. I have a video on trying to identify your interests in global health on my channel - here is a link: ruclips.net/video/LHxh1hMRqeY/видео.html
