Greg Chappell saw Sreeshanth as a future captain. He saw VRV Singh as a frontline bowler, Sachin as a middle-order ODI batsman, Suresh Raina as a future great and Irrfan Pathan as a batting all-rounder. We reached the ODI final in '03 and won it in '11. Only under Chappell's coaching in between, in '07, we got knocked out in the first round. One of the poorest returns as a coach ever, given the team we had back then.

Sachin started out as an opener in 1999 World Cup but had to play as a middle order batsman because his father had passed away. This was in group stages where he came at number 4 position against Kenya, Sri Lanka and England, and India won all those matches. He was back to being an opener in super sixes where we were knocked out because we lost against Australia and New Zealand.

Ganguly was the second highest run maker in 2007.. His performance was rewarded by his entry into Cricket Info. Sourav Ganguly just before retiring called up Boria Majumder and told him he is retiring as other wise they would not have been selected. He basically told the selectors " I am retiring from international cricket so please allow me to play for the last time". He was one of the few players Australian Cricket Team applauded when he came out..

I do not understand (not as a Sourav Fan) had some "reasonable" records in the years before the deadline :
    Year Format / Runs/ Average
    2000 -- ODI / 1579/ 56.39 Test/279/31.00
    2001 -- ODI /813/36.95 Test/444/22.20
    2002 -- ODI/1114/38.41 Test/945/41.09
    2003 -- ODI/756/38.41 Test/393/65.50
    2004 -- ODI/947/32.66 Test/408/45.33
Forget One Dayers , in Tests Ganguly altought averages are just "OK" , but in the past 4 years prior to that point , in test matches abroad (Nottingham, Yorkshire,Brisbane, Antiga,Kandy not the ones with easy 50s or in a loss) had a good hand.
Agreed Ganguly had a terrible beginning in 2005 (test/odi). So was Sachin and so was Laxman.
When Chappell (May/June 2005) took over, Ganguly played hardly 10 ODI matches and a couple of test matches and he drew a conclusion like that. A person who had 15000 international run in under 9 years? And by the way Ganguly did not make merry at home
What "favors" is he talking about ? What "chain-reaction" is he talking about ? I remember at that time the majority were not really compassionate for Sourav, in fact they every Tom Dick and Harry undermined Ganguly's record.
Just to keep everyone informed . I heard a lot of "Bravo Chappel" and how Dravid and Chappell had "ushered in" a new era .(had good record in sub continent ) , but once they went traveled WI or got to play with the big boys (SA/AUS) they were taken to the cleaners. I think it is the team's performance that bought Chappel down. Immediately after Ganguly was dropped they had results in his favour from Oct 2005 till May 2006 (India played a confused Sri Lanka , a weak Pakistan (despite that lost the test Series in Pakistan ), Drew with SA @Home , other than that nothing much to talk about (yeah the 22 match chasing streak, but it was with weaker teams in the subcontinent sub-standard cricket).
I do not understand where Ganguly was to blame for India / Chappel debacle post 2006. In fact after his comeback in 2006 where India again started making good strides (esp. in tests) for the next 2 years no thanks to Chappel . Ganguly had a lot of international runs (~3000) after the comeback and i think India's highest run-getter in that period.

Anirudh Krishnan and during Sachin we lost to WI , Australia (3-0),SA at home . And in Dravid we lost to Pakistan, SA , and that too having played most of the test matches in the subcontinent. During Ganguly we won with Australia , beat Pakistan, beat NZ , drew with England (in England after being 1-0 down) , drew with Australia ( not many teams have done that in Australia), and I remember we were ranked 2 the first time in History we came there. I do not know what loss with Zimbabwe you are referring to ??? You are grossly misinformed we drew with Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe and at that time even our former teams went there and could not win easily....The worst loss we had was in NZ 2002 and that was an aberration and we lost to Australia because of fielding an out of form side and then the pitch drama in Nagpur, and SL fielded Murali,Vaas, Jayasuriya at that time we had a tight 2-1 and the test we won had Ganguly with Captains performance...He just the same look in like other captain.... in fact we competed everywhere we went and for Indian Captain with a young team that was great.....And regarding the class yes he is not as good as the other three, but after comeback he even disproved that he had better contribution than Dravid , Laxman and pretty close to Sachin in those two years....In any case please do not be baised in your comments we could go back and forth all day.....and that is all I wish to say In any case we are talking about "Chapell" and "favors" and you have completely taken this video out of context Chapell was responsible for his own demise..

Ranjith there is no use of wasting syllables with this guy !!!! In my comments i had already talked about all the bad and the good of Ganguly's captaincy, i gave all the losses and wins ,it is sad that people jump the gun.... The spirit of the video is Chapell vs Ganguly.....We as Sourav fans agree he was bad in tests in 2005, may be he should have played the Nagpur test....i mean who is not exploiting pitches.. in 2012 , without any fuss we created spin tracks in India , we lost of course 1-2 any home team captain should get the pitches he wants, oh yes they will counter saying about Mr. Banarjee in Kolkota how he does not budge to BCCI, well atleast he did not create a green top for the opponent....Anyways he should have played the Nagpur test and then made a ruckus at the BCCI.... Ganguly might be the only Indian captain who made it abundantly clear all the time i mean all the time " A captain is only as good as his team "..... "Expert chasers " , well the whole idea about Indian chasing started from 1998 independence cup, 2000 vs SA (we chased target of 310 and 280 ) and of course the Natwest final 2002, and then we chases a couple of 300 vs WI in 2002, ( almost all of them Ganguly made a contribution atleast a quick 50 or so)well if it was flat subcontinental wickets, we could chase and that is what happened in 2005 with Chappel, we made merry with series in India, Pakistan and UAE , we had good chasing before as well......In any case the video is Chappel vs Ganguly . AGAIN MY ARGUMENT IS THE PERIOD BETWEEN NOVEMBER 2005 AND NOVEMBER 2008, IT IS ABUNDANTLY CLEAR GANGULY HAD THE LAST LAUGH....!!!!IF YOU WANT TO ARGUE IN THAT PERIOD WELL NOBODY HAS AN ARGUMENT!!!!!

In 2016, I believe two of his series didn't go well, but he came back into form in the next by coming up the order. At that time he had expressed that he wants to bat at number 4 or 5 now since he knew his game had changed at that point of time. He also however gave up captaincy to be fair to the team and not take decisions for his own betterment. Now with Virat incharge, Virat had no faith in anyone except Dhoni to bat lower down the order, he needed that solid backbone. 2017 it worked, Dhoni was still running hot, had Raina and Yuvraj around to help form partnerships. 2018, those two were not there and all he had were batsmen throwing wickets all around him. Because form is a mental state, he could not have played his best IPL season AND his worst international season at the same time. He regained it though, 2019 started with a bang.

For example if we take Srilanka, South Africa , pakistan and Australia all seniors almost retired. Now we can understand how srilanka and Pakistan are playing. An international team must be a mixed blend of seniors and juniors. In 1983 world cup, we can observe that Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar and some others are seniors. In T20 world cup 2007, senior Sehwag, Ajit Agarkar, Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh are seniors. They are above 25 age. That is not an under19 team to say it's a young team. Some of our people adopted Greg Chappell mind set but the point is in his tenure we didn't win a single icc trophy with or without Ganguly. 2) Sourav Ganguly led the team to WORLD CUP 2003 final whereas during the coaching of Greg Chappell the team could not cross Round 1. The next World Cup however was won by India .
    3) No-one wanted favour to be returned , infact in India people think opposite, we don't even take the concept of 'I owe you one that seriously"

@@yesno5480 Truth is always bitter for people who would like to treat cricketers like God. Such a culture has not changed in India. Ganguly has performed no miracle to take India to World cup final. I'm not denying the fact we played well in the tournament to put ourselves in a comfortable position. It is very difficult for any professional to work with Indian Cricketers especially the veterans(superstars).
They always believed that they are bigger than the game. When Greg Chappell tried to bring professionalism, accountability, fitness, team play into the group, Everyone was uncomfortable to get out of their zone and work hard. Chappell was right. It's important for Indian Cricketers to be in the team at any cost rather than making team India best in the world. It's not Chappell alone, Indian Captain Kohli had a problem with Kumble when he tried to bring discipline into their lifestyle. So Chappell can't be blamed as a ringmaster when our Cricketers like to drink, wake up late for the match and be overweight(Yuvraj Singh,Zaheer Khan). Still demand a place in the squad. That is unacceptable.
No will agree although stats clearly suggests that Ganguly was in pathetic form ever since he took over the captaincy. He took his place for granted and stopped working hard. He wanted to remain the captain because that's the only way he could have been in the team. That's 100% selfishness... From Ganguly,Tendulkar to Dhoni. We have seen it all. All passed their prime and remained in the team because they just wanted to and the selectors nor BCCI president had the balls to question or take a decision on merit.
India lives on past glory and emotions. We treat people from sports, cinema and politics like God. One of the main reasons why India struggle to move forward in various platforms. Especially Sports.
Chappell only did rights things keeping Indian Cricket in mind. I love Indian Cricket more than the Cricketers who represent my country. Hence I don't care who it is, If a player is not performing, He should be dropped which sets a theme very clear for others in the dressing room.

Ganguly did petty politics to keep Yuvi out of tests because his own place would be in threat. Chappell & John Wright's books reveal a lot about Indian cricket culture .
Chappell wrote in his book, once Ganguly said to Laxman that Chappell no longer considers he is good enough to be in team. So, when Laxman questioned Chappell, he replied "I never said that." & then together went to talk to Ganguly where he stammered & said "Chappell said you can play in tests but not in ODIs " . When Ganguly asked him about performance review after NZ Zim tri series, Chappell talked with him for 2-3 hours about how he himself , Border & many other players left captaincy
to regain their form . Later on Ganguly scores a slow 100 from 260 balls vs Zim & goes to press conference saying how Chappell wants to remove him from captaincy .
In a Match vs SA in Kolkata, crowd throwed slippers, shoes at Chappell & supported SA team & booed Indian team just because Ganguly was dropped .
Everyone ganged up against a foreign coach who wanted the team to improve . They lost the ODI WC with oldies but immediately won T20 WC with the same players Chappell was backing all along.

Bengal's revenge was world class during the 2005 ODI between India and South Africa at the Eden Gardens when India sans Ganguly was defeated by 10 wickets.
The pitch was prepared by the legendary curator Pradip Mukherjee, it is rumoured that soil and grass were secretly imported from Wanderers of South Africa.
Before messing with Bengal the spoilers should have known that Bengal is an internationally connected geo political state.
More happened after the match, the revenge continued until all the devil's dices who were responsible for dropping Ganguly were totally smashed and binned by the BCCI under the command of Ganguly.
During the break Sourav Ganguly appeared on the Giant screen riding on his fabulous Ranji score of 187 against Delhi on the same day.
Eden Gardens had assumed a spirit of the Redeemer that day.
It was a goosebumps day in the cricketing history of Bengal and the World.
Eden Gardens re- established itself as one of the greatest cricket venues of the world.
Nothing could have been more dramatic.

Clearly a lot of biased folks here who just look at things from one perspective... Claiming Ganguly was a great captain. His record was shit before he was dropped and that was for years. He literally piggybacked on Dravid, Sachin and other players for any success he had during that time. The team would have a much more success rate had he not been in the side. If you don't believe me look at any of his notable wins that he boosts about he would rarely performed. All his man of of match/ series wins came early on before he became the captain. He needed to go but unfortunately with the fan following that he had amassed it was difficult to do so. Also clearly he played politics to reinstate Greg Chappell thinking he would be a yes man. When that was not the case things started to go south... No respect for those who only look at the 2007 world cup and give out judgment. Indian cricket needed reforms which were later brought on during Dhoni's time which led to major wins but were clearly started during Greg's time.

    • @sanjaykumarsinha6907
      @sanjaykumarsinha6907 2 года назад +2

What were the reforms? The then team were more competent in both ODI and Test, where as later on the team became ODI specialist. Do you think in 2011 wc final opponent was the same as in 2003 wc? Who had authorised Greg to take control over all affairs giving the excuse of politics? Why Ganguly came back, if he doesn't want to work on his batting. Why Ganguly was not given chance as batsman only, knowing the fact captaincy takes its toll and If one has to believe that Greg adviced him to leave captaincy, why not stick to the plan? When Greg says that BCCI was ready to renew his contract who stopped him to continue? Is Greg himself a competitive person to select, coach and lead the team? If not what qualify him to step in the shoes of captain, selectors.
Are these false narratives are not set by haters of Ganguly at the cost of cricket reputation?
Why should Ganguly expect Greg to follow him? It was greg who want to become selector of team.
In 2022, are team India stable and competent enough to beat like team Australia 2003.
Fan following amassed by Ganguly restricted the selectors to oust him?
Virat Kohli is even more lengthy out of form but selectors have done good job to continue him as batsman only.

Well, Greg Chappell is intelligent enough to understand that having been a great player in the past does not authorize him to order or enforce drastic changes in an international cricket team. A coaches job at the international level is to be in sync with the captain, suggest constructive changes, and develop strategies both short-term and long term. It’s a no-brainer that either Greg is high-headed and irrational or it was a deliberate attempt on his part to destroy the core of Indian cricket fabric at that time.

Greg was certainly interested in the betterment of Indian cricket. He tried to inculcate Australian sports culture (perform or perish) into the Indian team. Unfortunately, the Indian mindset (nepotism, hero worshipping, favoritism, living on past laurels) won’t accept such culture easily. Certain players in the team at that time (Bhajji, Zaheer, Sehwag) owe their careers to Ganguly. They were never going to accept chappel. Thus he had to resign. Let’s not forget that Chappell introduced and backed some youngsters like Dhoni, Raina and even Yuvraj who won us the 2011 WC.

To be honest, I don’t think he is totally wrong. He came from a sports culture which built the best team of his time for many years and he was perhaps trying to inculcate the same culture in India. The real issue was the superhero culture in Indian cricket which he tried to get rid off and made everyone including the seniors accountable. He introduced some youngsters who served India for many years even after his tenure. It’s just that a culture change takes time and he may have just rushed it. Many of the youngsters (Raina, Dhoni, Yuvraj, Irfan etc.) played the t20 WC of 2007 and won it and even the 2011 World Cup. This shows that his intentions were definitely good.
