Interesting idea although I’ll admit to me it doesn’t look all that good either . Your correct about the decoy and water deterrent. I too lost koi from Heron. Now my pond isn’t as big but what I did and I’m quite happy with was I got 20 foot lengths of 1/4 diameter steel rod . I bent it to high arched hoops. My pond is long but not real wide. There is also a slight curve to it. I have loads of landscaping to work around as well . Making the hoops with a high arch it allows for plants in the pond edges to get tall. I have 4 going front to back and then I made one long one through the center line to tie them all together length wise. You may need to use 2 or more lengths depending on the size of your pond. Zip ties will hold it all securely. In my case I also made a few smaller arches in the back to work around all my plantings. I spray painted them all black and used black zip ties to keep together. Then I put black netting over and zip tied it a few places as well. I took steel tubing pounded deep into the ground to slide the arches in if you need to remove to get into the pond. Easy to put back in . I made a few plastic grommets to attach to the net at the bottom and long hooks into the ground. This way you can easily pull up to feed the fish. Note, you can just toss it in but a lot will just bounce off the netting. Plus I like them to come up to me at my feeding area. Honestly with this being around 5 ft high in the center you really don’t notice the net too much. With the high arc there is no way the Heron can get in to spear a fish. It works 100%. Just an alternative that I like way better. The steel and netting are cheap as well. Very easy to bend to what you need. You’ll want a helper to make it easier though. Hope this idea helps anyone trying to give protection that doesn’t look too terribly bad. BTW I found the black netting to look better than the clear stuff. I’m quite happy with it , several ppl have even said they really didn’t even notice it. Good luck to all of you trying to keep the heron from your buffet table lol.
'Howdy there pardna' when the summer returns to the UK I'm building my pond, I'm almost finished with my nature pond, I've got the plans in my head & I've got the wire. I can't wait. Thanks for the video, interesting.
Heron grrrr I know about them almost wiped my pond out one day , and let me tell you lines are better then dead fish , I think it looks fine , I ended up screening my pond in with my pool and deck everything is screened in . It did cost me a pretty penny but my fish are safe and I feed them and enjoy them with out the flys ,bugs , and the mosquitoes biting you . Iam glad u found a way to get rid of those nasty birds enjoy your fish !
Glad you found a way to stop that nasty heron! I am battling one that is terrorizing my pond. I had my pond over 20 years and no heron till now. It ate half my beautiful fish and wants them all. It won't stop for nothing! A plastic mesh fence went up last night the pond is net covered. My pond looks ugly now and it still comes. I'm esausted siting out guarding from sunrise to sunset. I'm going to try electric wires like you did! Funny I put fake alligator head in also. Them birds are evil demons!!
what about installing a plexiglass top about 2 to 3 inches below the water line? with 1 to 2 inch diameter drilled holes at various areas to let water circulate between the upper and lower. This will kind of act as a shield and you'll still be able to see your beautiful fishes.
I haven't had blue heron, my problem is cormorants! My pond has been there with minnows for 3 years and no predators but got koi end of May and 3 cormorant are sizing up the pond from my weeping willow. They haven't done anything yet. Don't know if they are wary of my chickens, ducks and turkey in the area next to my pond or what. I just put up bird netting yesterday when the 3rd cormorant showed up. How did they know? I live in Michigan not far from Lake Michigan and near the convergence of two rivers so water abounds. But I have never seen a cormorant in my life! Now within a couple months I got 3. Sheesh!
Herons had 5 of my fish last year had to net pond now which looks awful but I don't wanna lose all my koi new subscriber Barry Manchester England 👍 👍 👍
It looks terrible..but i get it . You need a big hide out for the fish..a cave..where most of them can get in..or a glass plateau..you can also walk on the plateau..
I walked up to a heron at my pond and yelled at him and he just looked at me. I knew I was screwed. I think I am just going to raise the ledge of my pond. Netting works great but ugly.
Herons don't care about all that wiring, there are videos of them simply stepping over fencing haha. In my opinion if you are located in the sticks with no neighbours, it's best to resort to a shotgun. If there are neighbours around, get a terrier
@@Edward-fg5ht dude you cant camp whit shotgun every early morning at your window waiting for herons lol. this dayz ive benn watching so much herons videos to. I think the best and the ugliest is to make a cage around your pound and not just above it. Or if you use a net check to install it really well because the heron can nevertheless sting them. At the moment i'm having a lot of problem with a kingfisher who comes to steal some young koi from me very early in the morning. a very sneaky bird which dives very quickly. lol my cats are on the spot but in the meantime I put a net
@@chechmusic2789 hey man thanks for the reply. Yeah it's far fetched tactic as more will just come. It sucks doesn't it, to have a nice pond only to fence it up. Terrier it is aha
I hung three CDs from trees on the side of the pond that has trees and moved the decoy to this new site and haven’t had the Heron return in over a week. See short video: m.ruclips.net/video/GGOmYHqOQpk/видео.html
This is hilarious, all over the fact that a natural phenomenon occurred. The Heron has been hunting this way for thousands of years, looks like evolution will need to further adapt this animal to deal with the over abundant human population as we conquer and destroy the planet with which all life stems from. God bless. Neat idea however I too have this problem with the native wild life.
I think the wires ruin the look of this beautiful pond, why not just put common goldfish in the pond very inexpensive and get rid of the wires and enjoy all the nature a pond has to offer, so you'll have to replace a few fish once in awhile.
I also live near a HUGE lake. I've lost several expensive and LOVED pets because of these nasty heron. I will definitely try the lines. Thank you

I often think about installing a small pond in my yard but then the reality sets in and the logistics of keeping predators out is overwhelming.

Hahaha "a whole heard of heron"
Love the video, awesome pond!
Is it still working for you?
do they come in 2OO amp?
Good idea. Don't mind if the birds get shocked. Haha

Need Tom Cruise to try and drop in from the top
Sorry about the stupid herons. I have a mud pond and I didn't lose any fish because my water's a little muddy.
It looks terrible..but i get it .

would clear fishing line work do you know?
If the birds didn't see the line they could be injured or killed!
TorontoBalconyGardener Michael I'd rather have a dead heron than my expensive fish getting turned into dinner.
Hold the phone still could not focus in what you were talking about.

I wish there was a better way, because the pond is beautiful but the lines makes it look ugly.
There are a lot of people where I live put a metal rust proof netting over the top and it has 3x3 squares on it looks better than what he has
lol he trying every thing for stop them

R herons good eaten?
A shame because it now looks a bloody mess.
Well you either have netting and strings or not fish. Prey will come, sooner or later.
why aren't herons classed as pests !!!!!!

epic pond. i just subscribed to your channel. check out my 1000 gallon on my channel
Beautiful pond but it look more like DMZ. Nothing air rifle can’t fix.
