The audio recording at 22:20 is honestly fantastic insight into the excitement people felt for this game. It definitely felt like I got transported back in time. Thank you for this video
Speaking about the scrollwheel buttons Sakurai suggested, I remember there were patents talking about it during the NX speculation days. I can't unsee how Breath of the Wild's item management looks tailor-made for a scrollwheel. You press and hold the scrollwheel, you scroll left and right to select an item, and then release.
It was particularly nice hearing the interview from Jonathan and his stories about E3. Thanks for bringing all this scattered info together for us, David!
That first documentary is a video I like to go back and watch every now and then. Thank you for all of the hard work you put into documenting the development of a childhood favorite of mine!
I remember seeing the videos and audio dairies a nearly 2 decades ago, in was fascinated by what NWR and PlanetGamecube had documented in Japan and I really like how oldschool it was. It was amazing, and I am so happy they put in this much effort into making it all happen. These are amazing time capsules thati from time to time look at a time long gone.
So glad to see a part 2! A few weeks ago I started playing a bunch of melee again going for 100%, and I rewatched a lot of your vids while doing it. The original doc is one of my favorite videos on the site and I’m so glad you’re back with more!
This era of gaming is always dear to me. The Gamecube was my first console and I remember vividly the ads it had, along with the PS2 and Xbox. I love history too, so this is my shit lol.
Heck yeah. So glad to hear it. I love this era as well. My earliest memories were the N64 era, which made this era extremely special for me as well since I was older and more appreciative of it.
Another great Melee primary source vid from David V. Kimball! Have you ever thought about reaching out to a Hal labs dev directly, other than Sakurai, for an interview? Preferably one that worked on character balance? I could see it being extremely eye-opening for the Melee scene, finally shedding light on so many mysteries that we've wanted answered for so long
@@thegameandwatch2799 I have actually reached out to HAL, and while their rep was very respectful, they were pretty clear about not wanting me to reach out to individual devs for this purpose. That hasn't stopped me from doing it anyway, but for their sake I have kept their comments confidential and won't be naming anyone I've talked to.
@@davidvkimball I respect the integrity in your decision. I'm thinking though that these individuals who worked on Melee may very well be happy to share their development knowledge, not in an association with HAL, just as a person. Do we know if the HAL devs of the time are restricted by any sort of NDA to discuss development?
I love this so much. Always wanted to learn more about the dev cycle and hear more in-depth interviews with all the devs, and hear their feelings on the game and where it is today as well
Thank you for the follow-up! The interview especially is wonderful. If anyone is trying to place the other baseball player in Seattle, that's Kazuhiro Sasaki, nicknamed Daimajin.
I get chills thinking of this game. I started playing it around the age of 4, and even then it captured me (i loved getting mr game and watch). What a great video man im looking forward to watching it
Reliving those childhood memories of my friends and I arguing about whether or not Sonic was secretly in Melee due to a certain April Fools joke. I was wrong :( but I always cherish my childhood memories of playing Melee with friends, my older brother and even his friends would let me play with them. Felt so magical. Great video David! Wonderful followup to Elevated.
Thank you very much! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. And great memories indeed, I remember thinking my friend was lying about how to unlock Mewtwo haha. Truly magical times.
53:49 To be truthful, I wouldn't quite hold my breath on anyone just happening to have a disc of Melee's E3 build outside of Nintendo or HAL Laboratory (be it the disc itself, or just the ISO on an internal computer drive), at least right now. Of what I've seen of the current prototype preservation landscape, showfloor builds of first/second-party Nintendo games looks to be as rare as they get. From the top of my head, we currently have 11 of them (counting Star Fox 2's WCES build… Maybe 12 if counting the ECTS build of Conker's Bad Fur Day?), and six of them are Pokémon titles. Doesn't mean that I'd refrain from biting my tongue forever though; Codebound showing up with Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga's E3 demo was definitely a surprise, as that was one of the lesser showfloor protos I've been wanting to play for years, and it's great to finally play around with it after over 20 years of its initial presentation… What I mean is, I do imagine we might get Melee's E3 build some day, most likely by unexpected surprise; But just based on the fact that it's Melee, I don't imagine acquiring the build would be as easy as just asking if someone happened to have it, as it would for say, the accidental early release of FNaF: Into the Pit.
59:30 I love the comparison of the models from different games & the coloring between Melee & Brawl. It is why I appreciate the character designs in the Smash series. It is something you rarely see back then in video games and why an artist like me loves the art styles in Smash.
I would like to see the E3 build datamined. Need clean audio versions of the coming soon and adventure clear themes. As well as the OG onett theme. Not to mention the original stage designs
"Enjoy Super Smash Bros. Melee not only during happy moments but also to lift your spirits during tough times. May you have a long-lasting relationship with Smash Bros. Melee" Man, if only they knew 🥲
