The fastest ever lap at 24 Heures du Mans
The Japanese driver revealed that he was shocked to find out that he had set a 3m14.791s when he crossed the line at the end of his qualifying run in the first of Thursday evening's two sessions.
"I thought I could do a 3m16s or maybe a 3m15s, but when I saw 3m14s, I thought wow," he said. "I went at the right time on the right tyres and it was correct to go straight after the red flag.
"It was a brilliant lap - no mistakes and no traffic."
Kobayashi's lap eclipsed Neel Jani's 3m16.887s qualifying record on the current configuration of the Le Mans circuit from 2015 and was also the fastest ever in the history of the 24 Hours.
The lap aboard the #7 Toyota TS050 Hybrid was completed at an average speed of 156.52mph.
That meant Kobayashi went faster than Hans Stuck's 156.47mph pole lap for Porsche in 1985, which was set before the two chicanes on the Mulsanne Straight and the one at Dunlop Curve were added to the circuit.
The real magic here is the fact he not only broke the record but had to coast through the finishing line to save maybe half ounce of fuel through an entire lap (he didn't misjudge a single inch of track at 180mph for 3minutes.. Insane
Why did he have to save that fuel? To follow the regulations?
@@joshsvoss Yes, there are limits to how much fuel you can use per lap and how quickly you can use it.
Maybe regulation should allow them to put solar panel on it to charge the battery and save more fuel.
Ha, I was wondering why he was coasting before the finish line. Now I know. Thanks.
335 kms = over 200 mph.
A lot of people don't understand why this is so impressive, Le Mans used to be a LOT less curvey, with a full straight down the back. There was around 12 less turns in the old le Mans Circuit, that's why the record stood for so long.
Everything Wrong With CinemaSins What was the lap record before this one?
@@drazenbudis7881 3:17 from what i remember
@@ugandanknuckles3341 in1989 (last year of the uninterrupted straight), Sauber C9 did 3:15.040 on qualifying.
@@drazenbudis7881 The Record was from a 2015 Audi R-18 which did a 3:17.647,before that in the old track,the Record was from a 1971 Porsche 917 which did a 3:13.90.
No lol that's not how it works. The records change when the track layout does.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a car go through the Porsche curves that quick
drivingkato they're on rails..
🤣
I don't think you have seen alonso's stint during this competition.
Waaay better
@@rguigRG lmao not at all
@@rguigRG Alonso doesn't come close to Kobayashi in WEC clown.
Terrifying speed. These cars (especially when driven by guys like Kobayashi) are absolutely ridiculous!!!
Great lap, awesome to see how fast the LMP1 are, just wished they didn’t have a max fuel consumption during qualifying, it’s pretty awkward to hear the drivers lifting and coasting during their hot laps...
MunroM84 I’m pretty sure it’s for the max fuel limit. The electrical input goes on at the beginning of the straight and the batteries recharges itself through heat regeneration and braking so lifting and coasting won’t really do that much
i was wondering already why he was lifting and coasting hehe
I believe Porsche was the only one with an MGU-H
I do believe theres a DBW control that is 'lifting' for the driver. I think its part of why Toyota had troule with one of the cars during the race last year
The turns before the first straight they avoid going full throttle to save the ERS for the exit of Tetre Rouge so they can accelerate quicker coming into the straight. If they drain their ERS through Dunlop and the esses they won’t hit their top speeds nearly as quick exiting Tetre Rouge
Imagine doing that for 24 hours! I drove the track in a VW Beetle the day before the 1965 race. It took a bit over 15 minutes flat out.
dhy5342 Well you dont actually drive it for 24 hours unless you’re a car
Drazen Budis still, one is in the car for a considerable amount of time.
A pilot is not allowed to drive for more than 4 hours in a row and 14 hours in total per a race
In 24h the car do like 450 lap
Imagine if he wasn’t coasting
Project A they have a limit For much fuel/boost they use per lap
He lifted before the line too.
Rossticles no, the battery was empty.
They have a limit on how much fuel they can use each lap, that's why they still lift and coast even in qualifying. They had calculated that coasting the last few meters to the finish was faster than using less fuel anywhere else on the circuit.
@@Celciusify must be really unsatisfying to lift of when you really want to see your time xD
Corner speed and exit is amazing!! Coming out of the second chicane, he went past that 458 like it was standing still!
Matthew Byrd *488
Nicolai Nielsen, correct.
'On rails' just got a whole new meaning, absolutely amazing lap
lmao this is incredible, funny how after you said this there was the 2020 merc but yeah in terms of wec this is the most on rails you'll get
@@es14hellothere Nope. Because it was in its low downforce set up for the straights of le mans. Imagine a high downforce set up (way more downforce than F1). Geez.
This is so ridiculous. I’ve never seen a perfect lap of Le Mans circuit de la Sarthe. As if this was a computer simulation!
Japanese pilot...
Tyres made of glue!!
no the tyres arent the cars floor is
tom Free You mean the track?
no the floor of the car diffuser etc
dude what
The cars floor panels/body work is what makes it stick like glue to the ground
Absolutely amazing lap!
yeah! he's just flayin there
What impressed me most was how the ground effects increased his cornering speeds to seemingly impossible levels. And he could get back on the power so early!
LMP1, don't make most of their downforce through ground effect not at all.
le tour clair au bon moment ça donne 3'14"791, rien à dire...bravo Toyota Bravo K.Kobayashi
some say they've put a 256 MB SD card to save weight
Need him back in F1
Gavin Garcia definitely
And put him in a truly competitive car, or even an LMP except this time no clutch failure
kamui Kobayashi and takuma sato have a great run literally
Better than half the current F1 grid, even Hartley whose career path is like the opposite of Kobayashi except Kobayashi could kick his ass in both categories with a competitive car
I really miss kamikaze Sato...loved his 3rd place finish in Japan that one year.
2,428,964,513,457,842,139,157 bugs and other insects were killed during this lap
Come on Toyot, make 2018 your year of glory in Le Mans !!!
This version is so much nicer to watch than the one with commentary ... pure sound
Imagine: After the Hypercar class replaces LMP1/2, all the former prototypes get together and race a 15-20 race series, going to tracks like Monza, Spa and Suzuka, each race being about as long as an F1 race
Who else would watch everything to do with it?
Kamui Kobayashi? That name is incredibly awesome. Gg, you’re the fastest around Le Mans!
And this, folks, is why they’re called pro.
That’s why he’s the GOAT!!! And he didn’t deserve to be in F1 just from 2009 to 2012
I know that the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix wasn’t Kobayashi’s last race. But lbh, we _all_ want to forget about 2014
Most of the time I can't see where the road is going, till he reaches the bend or chicane (and even then going by the engine sound and back-shifting. (got the same problem drying in a simulator myself). Now, I do understand that these guys got to know a track inside out (much more than I'll ever do), but it almost seems like these guys can complete a lap, blindfolded. Amazing ! (specially with a low sun, blinding you at these speeds)
When they were overdubbing the soundtrack for Grand Prix; I think it was Bob Bondurant drove Riverside like he would Monaco...shifting at all the right times to make it "real." It's insane that he knew the track (both) so well.
The speed in the Porsche Curves is breathtaking!
this is unreal, crazy speed in the final curves, nothing like this, what A SETUP ! it s perfect, did not waste a single inch ...amazing
What a talent what a machine
i think i added 500 views xD
love this man! :)
Same
Amazed @ how LOUD it is... The Audi R18, is basically Silent...
The way he took the mulsanne corner 😍😍
Awesome lap
Well done, but one must also have to admit that he had some luck with traffic. :)
Well duh, this is just after a yellow flag xD
It was a perfect scenario. I heard Bruno Senna in an interview during the 2017 6H Nurburgring race explain that it hadn't rained in weeks coming up to Qualifying. The stage was set for ridiculous grip.
it doesn't matter if it's after a break or something, there are 60 cars that share the track at any time at any session, when you do your outlap and start your timed lap, there are still cars exiting pits to start their outlap and as the fastest class you catch plenty of those cars in their outlap.
Sadly, the pole at Le Mans is first due to luck on traffic before being due to performance
imagine that lap on the old la sarthe layout: mulsanne straight + kink & maison blanche corner through original ford chicane
And he did it short shifting every gear!🙀
had to double check my video playback settings...thought it was set to 2x speed -.-
He's taking nearly the entire Porsche Curves completely flat
See F1 drivers are the quickest. What a lap!
I used to think, "if they went around the track faster, then they'd use less fuel." But of course that's not the case, because if there's less grip and the cars went slower, they'd be on WOT lesser time, the higher speed also means the car is fighting more aero drag the whole lap. That's why here Kobayashi had to purposely lift at the ends of the straights, because he had too much grip and too much speed that he had to save fuel. And precisely at the ends of straights is when fuel saving has the least effect on lap time.
This guy really deserves a F1 seat!
@@thomas.cupial I know that... But he deserves come back.
@@thomas.cupial yeah!!!
And the really impressive thing is he was lifting and coasting into most corners. Meaning that it could , if you could keep it under control, go even faster!!
he was lifting to not pass the max fuel consumption per lap
I wonder if without the fuel limitations and no lifting and coasting what the time would be.
Btw the most exciting thing is the way these cars nowadays take the porsche curves.
Tasos S. Probably something around 3:13.500, I guess
3.14.500 , he lifted for 1.5 seconds , but still have speed , so he would had gained 0.3 s ...
@@vitakyo982 I'm interested in knowing how you arrived at that number. I imagine a spreadsheet with all the times he lifted, for how long, and at what speed.
@@acruzp Nothing analytic for sure . Just a feeling . a little drop here , one there ... it could be even faster ... It's called "nose" science ... ☺
A 3.07
He just rape that track with that Toyota..... so so neat and well timed gear changes, breaking zones,apexes.... Pro.
clean drive indeed
Amazing lap but I’d like to see some on-board telemetry ... that would have been cool.
This was amazing.
C est juste incroyable la tenue de route des protos de maintenant...le passage du virage du raccordement et des s porsche est terrifiant...chapeau bas...
I COULD NOT DRIVE LIKE THAT, EVEN IF LIVED A THOUSAND YEARS. Amazing!
Well no shit
Never seen anyone brake that late for the first Mulsanne chicane.
Incredible grip...
Wow .. perfect lines, much difficult to do better ..
Wow, they sure have a lot more turns and guardrails in Le Mans then they used to. Very different atmosphere. I miss the people sitting at the cafe tables a few feet away from the screaming cars!
I wish I could drive like this in forza
The car sounds so slow on Hunaudières, but so fast on corners
WOW! Ain't like it used to be back in the day!
I think Kobayashi race in lemans is very good choice
Wish video games got the traction right. Looking at you Gran turismo. Truly hope future racing games allow us to really mimic the performance of these machines.
途中で追い抜いたポルシェとの速度差があり過ぎてコワイ。
Nowadays i have to look multiple times if i'm watching a game or the real thing.
Bandit Darville They're at the point where real life is faster than in games. Drivers are trained so well to notice the tiniest impulses and get every ounce of grip imaginable. Games just can't match that
I drive like that when I've eaten something that doesn't agree with me,and have to get home, fast. 😂
TOYOTA 😎👍
KOBAYASHI 😎👍
Kamui Kobayashi Full Attack !
Magnifique.
Nice Sound
LEMY 20 better than current F1 V6 Turbo hybrids!
ZeldaACFan17 And to add insult to injury it's a V4-H producing MORE power AND better sound haha F1 is just sad
the Toyota TS050 has a V6. The Porsche 919 is the car you're thinking of with the V4.
I always liked him in F1, how McLaren picked Sergio Perez over Kamui-san I will never understand, oh well cause McLaren sucks now which is a shame cause they were my favorite team because of Senna
Because he's Asian. Do you know Keiichi Tsuchiya? He rode Mclaren F1 with a British driver in Le Mans. The manager of the team was also a British and the manager kept letting a British drive the machine in preliminary qualifier. And he couldn't record enough time to go to qualifier. Finally, the manager used Tsuchiya just before the end of time attack and the team could go to qualifier. This story tells that Asian drivers can't drive better machine even if they are as good as other drivers. 2009 F1 champion Jenson Button is currently driving NSX in GT500 with Yamamoto but Yamamoto is always faster than Button in time attack. This shows that Asian drivers are as good as other drivers.
I enjoyed this great run, after about 17 hours ago, watching the 1959 Jaguar B&W film of roughly the same thing, but with driver explaination. The 2018 version is much faster, of course.
Yeah I watched that same vid yesterday too
Yeah RUclips spoon fed me the same two videos too.
Watch the 1959 x 2 speed : D
Japanese drivers are the best at Time Attacc
Fantastico giro!!!!!! Kobayashi mitico!
Wait, did he slow a few moment before attacking the next lap ?
The fastest man ever on that race!!
Him, Vergne, and Hartley need to come back to F1!
Toyota Hybrid. Mixed results.
I think that I could come real close to that record with my mom's mobility van. Since the majority of the turns are right handers, I could open the side doors and let the wheelchair lift down to about even with the inside floor. That would bias the weight of the van towards the right and give me a heck of an advantage in the right turns.
Then, if I could talk my mom into sitting in her power chair, she could move the wheelchair to the appropriate side of the van for each upcoming turn. It would be a sort of active cornering system. Yeah, I think it could work. Hmmmmmm
I remember driving to the grocery story once. It was 5 miles away and I completed my milk run in 20 minutes.
Fantastic drive fantastic car!
Fantastic car, Fantastic driver! And how about that lap time!! 3:14.791. THE FASTEST EVER!!!😵👻☠️
Perfection Right there👍🏻..forza fanatic..🏴👍🏻
phenomenal pace!

Toyota's Race Car Development Team: 私のビールを持ってて. (Hold my beer.)
3 words. Fastest... lap...ever!!
THat is a total pro right there, why does he lift before the finish line?
They have a fuel limit per lap
He must have been a bit high on the fuel usage on that lap in particular. It would make more sense to wait until the breaking zones to lift or mid corners, like he does on other turns, and treat the finish line just line any other straight.
This car shifts up almost as fast as Dick Landy used to shift with a 4 speed manual.
Not trying to take anything away but this was a qualifying lap time to right. I dont think the records been set yet during the race
Wow....super downforce and handling
That's insane!…
amazing!!!!
Awesome
he needed a mic, just so he could drop it as he came over the line. minus the whole sticking your arm out of a 150+ mph car.
Ca a l'air de sacrément coller à la piste...
And it’s not even at 100%. He’s coasting before every corner. My god. Inch perfect.
Yes that's treu every hybrid car have to coast before a corner. That's the point they loading the hybrid systems. They can release this power on the exit of the corner. So it is at 100% but it's a whole other way of driving in these machines.
@@sandervonderen9933 Wrong. Braking would be way more efficient to recover hybrid power. The reason why they lift and coast is for regulations that restrict hoe much energy they can use per lap. Simple.
7000RPM…
小林選手、やっぱりすげえ!!走りのリズムがすごい(特に最終区間)。最後のトラブルさえなければ、もう少し早いタイム出たかもしれないのにもったいない!!サルテサーキットのレコード更新、お疲れ様でした!!

He does lift and cost in additionnal !
I would assume he could have gotten faster without the max fuel consumption because with the normal power sure he is slower but he wouldnt have had to let off and that alone would have saved him maybe 2 or 3 seconds
Why the lift right before the Start/finish line?
SuicidalZerg because they have fuel limits, so they lift and coast
So that little lift before the line made sure he don't use the max amount of fuel aloud? How does he know if that was enough lift to keep him under the limit.
Good God it just shrugs off the Mulsanne chicanes.. I've spent a lot of time with the 919 at Sarthe in Assetto, and it sure as hell won't match that level of grip.
Yes it will. How bout you drive it without assetto Corsa?
cool
Shame there's no onboard with Pedro Rodriguez to compare the two laps -
