This month Ford Abu Dhabi's Mikko Hirvonen will bid to win Wales Rally GB and the World Rally Drivers' Championship.
It's one of the toughest rallies on the calendar, with snow, fog, ice and rain all possible, and hundreds of kilometres of muddy track.
And it's always been that hard.
Back in the '70s, Ford ruled the roost, with 8 successive wins in the event - here's how Hannu Mikkola and Arne Hertz led a Ford 1-2-3 in 1978...
8.51 the man in the blue overalls and green tie. What a legend wearing sunglasses on a night forrest stage
Watching this having just heard Hannu passed away last Friday. this rally probably the last time someone led an event by 7 minutes.... What a driver, and such a nice man. R.I.P.
Mikkola and the Eaton Yale Escort MK II. What a spectacular combination in action. RIP GREAT man you will be sadly missed. Love to all your family from a long term fan in little Wales. 🏴🏴
Great days. Was out spectating on this, lots of different cars, typical long RAC. It's a bit sobering to see how many great names in the rally have now passed away, the latest being Hannu, but how great it was to see so many British divers fighting for top positions. I suppose I've been spoilt watching rallying in the 70s, 80, and 90s. My favourite cars. The Escort, Audi Quattro and Subaru impreza from those different eras.
Ford then with the Escort RS1800..were the most Successful and Well Managed Rally team of all time, the quality of Drivers on there Books were unbelievable ...👑👏👏
I never had a mk 2 escort,I had about 4 mk 1s,always changed the motor to a 1600cc,just really nice cars,I lived in England for 40 years and never got to see a live rallye, what a fantstic motor sport.
Brilliant stuff, thanks for uploading this video
Thank you for this, FordWRC!
the "sedan" bit was the british rally championships sponsor, sod all to do with the style of car dummies, the tr7 and stratos were sure great sedans
LOL @ 1:40 for Rohl's co-driver position. Brilliant!
Awesome! Love listening to the sounds of motors. Makes me wonder how "todays" WRC drivers would fair driving these primative cars.
