      @@kennnnn I find it way more likely than the idea that all the people are only ironically liking these characters. I only think it's naive to be surprised that when you model your bad guy after someone who literally has a cult following that the members of that cult won't genuinely like and identify with that character.
      They say it would take someone with no empathy not to relate to those humanizing moments and start to relate to them. That's not the problem. People with no empathy only relate to what they, know and have experienced and are incapable of put themselves into the shoes of someone else. Ex. Not being able to truly imagine what it might be like to be gay or trans and understand how truly awful it would be to say who you are inside is not valid.
      I like and appreciate that these are great complex characters, but in the end i still recognize they are the bad guys and that ironically acting otherwise is fucking stupid, and genuinely liking and supporting these characters really says something about you.
      I love breaking bad. I liked Walt up until the shot of that Lilly of the valley at the end of season 4. Every watchthrough after that I realized earlier and earlier where it was clear Walt was wrong until I realized it was in the very beginning when he turned down the job at the company he help start saying it was charity when his friend flat out said that part of the company is rightfully his. It wasn't charity, it would have been payback.
      I even went from hating skylar to feling so bad for her. She went from being an inattentive, even nagging wife, to a truely caring and supportive partner when she found out he was sick. My wife, who turned on walt when he didnt save jesse's girlfriend when he is the one who knocked her over. (I didnt even notice that until she pointed it out) She suggested that the first BB watchthrough could be a test for sociopathy, depending when you start to hate walt, thats how much of a sociopath you are.

    The best villians are the ones you can't look away from.
    Homelander, Joker, Thanos, Anton Chigurh, the list goes on. They're endlessly entertaining, and even if we want them to lose, we want them to stick around as long as they need to. We want them to have a full arc, or at least a death worthy of their character.

    • @holdmydualshock
      @holdmydualshock  Месяц назад +1

      Exactly! We can be invested in their character and thoroughly enjoy when they're on screen and still understand they are the bad guys.... but that also means we won't be happy if their deaths are not worthy for such a complex adversary

    I always find that interesting with show runners. They do hate it when you love their bad guys. But like you guys said, they tend to forget about their heroes. The ones you want us routing for. The make them less complex and refrain from giving them flaws or making them”morally wrong” choices. Even if those “morally wrong” choices would create growth from consequence.

    • @holdmydualshock
      @holdmydualshock  20 дней назад +1

      Exactly and in result, the characters they want us to like are usually so boring whereas the "villians" are multifaceted, complex, and entertaining. We don't want to be them, but boy are they enjoyable to watch

    You guys made a good point. Maybe you shouldn’t have your best actors playing the villains. Whenever this happens, the audience is going to enjoy their performances and as a result, like them a little bit more. Heath ledger did such a great job in playing the Joker that people enjoyed his character even though he was a sociopath and sadistic killer. Joaquin Phoenix playing the Joker as well did such a good job that people could find themselves empathizing with his character. When these actors do such a great job in playing these characters, it causes many of us in the audience to visualize ourselves in their position. Causing us to walk in their shoes so to speak and see how we would deal with the situation that they may be going through. But there’s also another component that we have to admit to. People tend to enjoy watching the bad guy in movies and TV shows because the bad guy tends to be the most interesting. As much as we like Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars movies 🍿, we have to admit that we enjoy watching Darth Vader even more so. He’s interesting. We think to ourselves “what would I do if I had all that power and control”? We live in a world where there’s a general saying “Nice guys finish last”. It’s a subliminal thought that many people have. It’s no wonder that when many of our directors make movies 🎥, they tend to make the bad guy more interesting than the nice guy. People are just fascinated with the bad guy. Many leaders of different nations are considered bad guys. Many women love dating the bad boy. This fascination of the bad guy is all around us so it’s no wonder that people love the villains in movies and TV shows. But what do I know. I talk in third person 😊.

      Yeah. People liking homelander (whether its the comic or the show) is VERY similar to people who like the joker from DC or carnage from Marvel. Great comment. Homelander isnt real, so who cares if people think he's cool. Watchimg heroes and villians is supposed to be fun and engaging.

  • @PinaKoalaGaming
    @PinaKoalaGaming Месяц назад +1

    It’s kinda hard bot to draw comparisons between Homelander and Trump when they both clearly have a toxic need for approval and adoration from the masses and they both attempted to take over the White House illegally. I think the most important aspect to realize is that Homelander isn’t a Trump stand-in. Trump embodies Homelanders’ character from the graphic novel. So doing Homelander justice in the show means you’re going to see a lot of Trump in him after the past 8 years of American politics and news coverage.

      With regards to the books, part of me feels like homelander is just a side villian, where as the show makes him the main villain. I and others feel like the main villian of the boys are the people in the background who we don't notice right away who let truly horrible people go to continue the cycle. Vought are the true villians. If it wasnt homelander, some other super star would take the spot so Vought can hide their misdeeds to keep selling heroes and make more money.
