  • The Lost Words by Robert Macfarlane is the kind of book that you need to hold in your hand to really appreciate. Twenty spells to conjure the names of common animals and plants back into our language accompanied by gorgeous paintings by Jackie Morris. It's a book to take time over, so we took our time to talk to him about what went into creating it. Carve out 25 minutes for yourself now or save this for later, but don't miss this fascinating conversation with the author of one of the books of the year: bit.ly/2i0mzDC

My Brother-in-law and Sister introduced me to this book today and I was enthralled. It was a walk in the countryside now and as a little boy 70 years ago. It brings nature to life on Steroids. One of the best interviews I've seen in a long time, from both sides.

I saved this video, so as not to forget the things McFarlane is talking about & to do something to help save our wildlife and words.

Tree time. That was a great example of different perceptions of time. It made me think of J.R.R. Tolkien's Treebeard the Ent, and how long their names would be if fully spoken because their names were composed of their entire long lives, which was their identity, the summation of all their many experiences. Or Tom Bombadil and his long history on Middle Earth and the things, people, and events he could recall; and TLOR is all about time; it's passage; it's flow; that everything changes. This book is like that. Great interviewer, too. Great questions.

Amazing literary devices!! It makes the listener so stimulated with the assonance and alliterations! ☺️i hope more writers will be inspired with this creative kind of story writing❤️

I'm very glad I discovered Robert's work. The world seems to be going completely f-ing crazy at the moment and the writings of people like him help immensely. Even though he looks a bit like a vicar here !

I think the vicar look was thought out, a connection with a sacred image perhaps?

This book looks beautiful but I have a problem with the 'kids these days don't know anything' rhetoric - it's a bit patronising.

Logophilia! great, poetry isn't dead! The music and beauty of words and rythem are alive and well? Therefore would we blindly encourage children or parents reading to children to entrain them to cast spells calling brambles to over run our living spaces holding fast the cars to the point of shutting the businesses down and calling up millions of moths resulting in doors and windows to be locked and people hiding away from the influx, abandoning the territory. This is not a healthy thing to covertly divert attention away from the destructive calling up of forces to the point of humans being driven from their homes! The same kind of thing about the weasel, the spell is to call up embers spin to destroy grass and trees destroying the ground and air quickly! This summer in England the earth is scorched and this is to entrain children to quickly call an end to the world of nature we live in and it all seems to be deceitful. Not all want to be witches and manipulate and control our environment by casting spells to destroy our nature fuelled by the words of our mouths. Logophilia has been around since the dawn of time and the music of spoken words has touched and rekindled lost love and memories and painted pictures forever, this is nothing new. Unfortunately neither are warlocks and witches interfering with children and their environment. Witchery hidden amongst pretty pictures and other words. Its all very clear.
