    in one of your comments some one said they had everything except the disc brakes and it just recently jogged my memory as I remember back in 71 or so I had a caliper seize and I needed new ones and ,, they were not available even from ford, perhaps the owner of the GT who commented was forced to switch to drums, I remember having a bear of a time trying to rebuild my set up , the 65 and 66 calipers had a poor design for sealing the caliper boots which was modified in 67 a bit fixing the problem.

    Hi, great video, I have looked at countless videos and web pages trying to find this information.
    I have a 1966 coupe that I have done up, it has everything in your video except the front disc brakes and it is very frustrating as everyone I speak to says it MUST have front disc brakes to be a GT. It even had the disc brake logo on the brake pedal. The car had never been restored as far as I can tell and I have all photos to prove it has all the points in your video. My question to you is-
    Is it possible to have front drum brakes on a GT? I don't see why someone would've gone to all the trouble to try to make it a gt clone, as the car was not in a very good condition when I bought it. Or the only other thing I can think of, is that for some reason the disc brakes were swapped for another car? It has bugged me from day one from when I first bought the car.(the seller, never even mentioned anything about it possibly being a gt,but he wasn't a ford man, he was just going to do it up and flip it) Any input would be greatly appreciated-I can send photos to you if required.Regards Dave from Melbourne Australia

    • @QualityClassics
      @QualityClassics  6 лет назад

      The answer is no, it would've definitely had front disc brakes. HOWEVER, IT IS HIGHLY possible that they were just swapped out some time ago. We've actually owned a car that had that exact same thing happen to it. I wouldn't be surprised at all if this is the case with your car. Cheers from Texas! Go check out the article on our website related to this video... there's some really nice illustrated photos.

      Hey Rossco - for what it's worth I have a 66GT coupe and the reinforcement plates are there so would assume the same for all body styles. I understand that 78 ford granada spindles can be fitted, using more modern disc set up, ?? course not original but interesting.

    When looking at a GT or K code car I always just walk right to the trunk and check for the rear dual exhaust welded brace...it can't be faked....everything else can....including the vin stamp.

      @jeffsherren8999 4 года назад

      @@QualityClassics, yea it was unusual but people tend to forget that back then customers could actually order their cars how they wanted em. My father said he didn't want the disc brakes, because if I remember correctly '65 was the 1st year of em for Ford, they were having some issues with em yet. He also didn't want the GT badging cause he didn't want to have to run the shit out of it all the time lol. I put the GT steering box, sway bar, spindles, n the 8in 3.00 traction lock in my mom's 64 1/2.

      Not sure the "GT" handling package was sold as such, certainly not before the GT was introduced. Early K-code cars had the handling package and used Fairlane station wagon brakes.

    • @jeffsherren8999
      @jeffsherren8999 3 года назад

      The handling package was sold as a "stand alone" package also. You could order just that as my father did. There was 3 different "packages" that would be combined to make a "full GT". Just because my dad's car didn't have the other 2 doesn't mean it wasn't a GT, it had the most important part, the handling package. It was also a late 65 and not all Kcodes were GTs.

    I just bought a 1966 fast back supposedly a GT I have most of the clues except the core support and I have a bottom molding but the car has been restored once

    • @QualityClassics
      @QualityClassics  5 лет назад

      It's possible that the core support could have been changed out at one point in your car's history. The rear frame rail is the hardest to fake, so if you've got that then the odds are you're probably good. :)

    Great video and great looking car! I would say the lip on the hole in the rad support, the steering box tag and the fog lamp wireing are the best and most iron clad clues. The dual exhaust reinforcements are good, but I would guess that nearly all A and K codes were ordered with dual exhaust. The external clues aren't worth much...too easily added, unless you're dealing with an untouched original. Even with an original they could be dealer add-ons. Ford advertised "Make your Mustang a GT. Your dealer has all the parts" and people loved to customize their Mustangs back then.

  • @richardbarkley9909
    @richardbarkley9909 4 года назад

    Non-GTs (K-codes mainly, because I've never seen a factory A code with factory dual exhaust) HAD dual exhaust, but the tailpipes were turned down and from the outside of the car they looked like single exhaust car tailpipes. So THEY WOULD have had the same reinforcements in the back.....

    This car has some problems on the interior. GT's have a wood-grain wheel regardless of pony interior. The instrument cluster and glove box door will have the same outlining as the wood-grain panel. www.virginiaclassicmustang.com/66-GT-INSTRUMENT-BEZEL-USE-WITH-STANDARD-INTERIOR-WITH-GAUGES-P2757.aspx www.virginiaclassicmustang.com/66-GT-WITH-STANDARD-INTERIOR-BLACK-GLOVE-BOX-DOOR-P2860.aspx
    Also what was not mentioned on the exterior is that there be NO rocker trim and NO quarter trim on a GT. These were always deleted.
    This car is obviously a GT, however, somewhere in its history its interior was probably restored before correct bezels were available for the GT and wood-grain wheels were not being reproduced or restored.

    • @QualityClassics
      @QualityClassics  8 лет назад

      Thanks for your comment Chip! Actually the wood-grain steering wheel is not a required option for a GT. However, you are correct about the glove box lid being replaced before the correct style was being reproduced. You're also correct about the rocker molding and trim being deleted... we just didn't feel it necessary in this video to mention what is "not" supposed to be on the car. You've got a sharp eye!

    • @66kcode
      @66kcode 7 лет назад +1

      This is actually not true, my car is a documented San Jose GT K-Code with standard interior and it always had the black standard steering wheel, and full circle chrome inline camera case instrument bezel and glove box door. This has been discussed many time on the mustang concours forum and other sites. See this quick link link as others have found the same thing, notice the update correction when talking about it... www.mustangdreams.com/verify-1965-1966-mustang-gt.htm

    I have recently purchased a 1965 “A” code coupe that is a GT, so far I can confirm that is a Factory GT, however I have a couple of questions, did 65’s have the pony interior available, also my car has a wood grain dash is this incorrect my car came with a standard interior,

      wood gain only came on deluxe interior cars, and yes, deluxe (Pony) interior was available in 65
