    Hello all,
    Well, I WAS on of those guys. Clearly by the "performance" we had that night, the Marlins released and replaced us.
    It was the inaugural season, we were hired to be on the groundskeeper get/tarp crew.
    It was fun. They basically went to our High School and hired us. I was in 11th grade.
    Are you kidding me? Get to go to all home games for free, hang out with buddies from school, have all access, be on the field, free food and get paid? I'm in!
    Well as you can see on video this was our first and last night.
    For example, if the games started at 7:05 or 7:35 eastern time, we had to be there by 5 I think.
    We didn't even have our drivers license so our parents took turns taking a few of to and from the stadium.
    I can assure you Alan, the head ground keeper had us practice, practice and practice.
    Except all the times we practiced it was sunny and ideal field conditions.
    Thennnnnn.....
    This wasn't a "drill" it was real, our first time and rain delay. The tarp weighed so much especially with the fierce heavy South Florida down pours.
    We got stuck, the traction of the sand was like sand paper, we were what? 5'9 and 160 lbs "soak and wet" we needed help from players and managers.
    Embarrassing!!!
    At least for a few months, I was in the field , got to meet many players, saw Joe DiMaggio on opening day as he throw out the first pitch
    And tons of memories.
    Sorry Marlins for letting you all down. After this we got replaced by grown men (haha)

      I was at this game I remember when john franco and fans from the stands came in to help lolol...going to Marlins game especially day games you could always expect a rain delay...this was always played on old blooper vhs back in the day.. this game, when Andres galarraga hit that mammoth grand slam into the tarp against kevin brown and later on in the game charged the mound, the 97 ALDS, and game 1 of the 97 world series will always be my best memories of Marlin games at Joe Robbie Stadium

    6:53 Rookie Jeromy Burnitz of the Mets hit his first career MLB home run in this game in the 3rd inning.
    If this game had to be cancel due to the infield conditions, then the game would have had to be replayed another day from the very beginning, and all stats of the game would be wiped out, including Burnitz first career home run, since this rain delay occurred before 5 innings were completed (or 4 and a half innings were completed if the home team was winning).
    Mets won this game 10-9 in 12 innings. Many home runs were hit combined by both teams.
    1993 Mets = "Legendary" team
    1993 Marlins = Their inaugural season

    Oh the irony of being too snobbiah to let your logo get dirty & avoid doing it the easy way. FYI, the intelligent way is to unroll it with logo side facing the ground at the edge of the infield. Then the crew grabs the right field edge end, runs across the tarp pulling it behind them toward 3rd. When they get to 3rd base the entire tarp has been flipped over to expose the logo.
    They're doing this technique just to keep their logo side shiny and pretty.

    • @hpeet1000
      @hpeet1000 8 лет назад +11

      Pretty sure it had to do with the tarp and the ground being wet, causing a suction therefore "bogged down"

    • @Splinter48708
      @Splinter48708 6 лет назад +2

      Too much water on the tarp along with the friction with the grass and infield.

  • @jamescrabtree9240

    McCarver didn’t know his Gettysburg history. The battle didn’t occur in late July of 1864, but rather early July 1863 (July 1-3).

  • @renegade44040

    If several dudes stand under the trap while it is being pulled over them it will create a bump for the water to roll off.
    Really. I was yelling just run under the trap with your hands up. Just have several people run under the trap with their hands up so the water rolls off!!!

  • @Daveyo747
    @Daveyo747 6 лет назад +3

    there should be a pull machine that comes up from the ground on the third base side that they can hook the tarp, and let the machine pull the entire tarp in . Anything but what we all have witnessed here, is awful. Not enough crew and manpower, way out in the field etc.
    That Groundskeeper manager should be fired.

      Actually, quite a few. The Cookie Cutter Stadiums of the times would frequently have them. I remember a player once got injured by the automatic tarp.
