There was also a (probably coincidental) Jevil reference during the werewerewire fight, "the air crackles with fighting spirit" obviously being different from "the air crackles with freedom" that Spamton NEO and Jevil use.
Spamton and Kris have a lot in common, and I love how the game highlights that. Both being controlled by beings far greater than themselves and both so desperate for any chance to break free that they do dangerous and harmful things to both themself and those around them
I feel genuinely bad for Kris, I really do. I just want them to be happy with their friends, but something's wrong with them. I maybe I'm misinterpreting dialog, but Snowy and MK make a comment while standing in front of the door about what happened to Kris when he attempted to explore the bunker. It probably happened recently as of the game starting and probably led to the events of the game starting. Like I said I probably read it wrong.
@@Kalmaro4152 my guess is that when Kris went to the bunker they encountered some form of Gaster that manipulated them into becoming the knight. They fight against the player to do their own thing, but even when they do their own thing they are still being puppeted by something else
@@SkeithSheep He wasn’t really destroyed, but just had his essence scattered across time and space. So it’s very likely that some form of him exists in the Deltarune universe, especially when you hear his weird, garbled voice on the phone when calling from the dark world.
This song was amazing, it fit perfectly. It was very [HYPERLINK BLOCKED]. I originally thought jokingly, that this was Toby saying "I hate advertisements" or something.
“Hey is it cold in here or is it just me” Both forms of this fight are basically the same but somehow represent 2 very different versions of the character, the normal route has a insanely optimistic puppet born for stardom, who wishes to break free. And in contrast the Snowgrave route has a victorious yet pessimistic puppet who believes himself to be free (despite being as powerful as the main universe version who fully knows he’s trapped by the game) and is fixated on the devilish deal you have with him
hes free because he escapes his prison and took over the entire Dark World while you froze everyone and ascended the mansion. in the normal route he was just freed and wants to reclaim what he once had but bound by strings.
In the second route, it's much like the Sans fight. We're the boss. Not them. They're living on borrowed time. They may kill us over and over but it's only a matter of time until we obliterate them.
Spamton is also kinda sad that he has everything, from his dialogue in the second phase and the sad music, hes the same as before, with the world on his hands but no ftiends to be there with him, and not even the man on the phone.
I'm pretty sure spamton just took the opportunity to take over the cyber world, since noelle had eliminated all resistance to his invasion of the castle. He was helping Kris so he could take over and become a [[[BIG SHOT]]
@@niftylittlename he's not sad, he planned for all this to happen. He deliberately gave Kris the thorn ring, planning to use him and Noelle to free the way for him to take over the world. If not for the player controlling Noelle so much at that point that they can call her from anywhere, Spamton would've succeeded too as Kris can't deal with an invincible robot that keeps attacking forever. It's all in his dialogue: "who'd know you'd use my ring for evil? Oh right, that's why I sold it to you". Spamton is sad, but about his past glory. Spamton was a big shot before but lost pretty much everything in a single swipe, now living in the dumpsters. The way he taunts Kris in the second phase is also him reminiscing about that time. Otherwise he's absolutely happy with ruling the world, especially had he killed Kris too.
I feel like Mettaton Neo’s attacks are split between Spamton and the Queen. The Queen uses the leg attacks from EX, and Spamton’s attacks take more from the Shmup attacks in EX’s fight
@@conquestanddeath4406 And the very thing happens if you go out of your way to find the alternate rout, admittedly it's just on a painting, but hey, you get what you get!
@@toastNeko Let's just say if you go out of your way to influence Noelle's actions in combat and look for dumpsters, you will get a rather fascinating change in the story.
Yeah..I also realized that a bit of "The World Revolving" is in this..so I expect the other secret boss themes will be bangers AND involve "The World Revolving" somehow, someway...and I'm excited to see if I'm right!
You're forgetting Megalovania and arguably Battle Against a True Hero. Genocide Undyne is still harder than Jevil and Spamton NEO. I don't think this is because Toby couldn't have made them harder, the difficulty of chapter 2 in general was still definitely a step up from chapter 1. If it continues to follow this trend chapter 7's super boss should be the hardest boss in the series by far. What I'm trying to say is that if Toby had made chapter 1 and 2's super bosses as hard as Undyne/Sans it would be incredibly difficult if not impossible to maintain that difficulty scaling I was just talking about without his game turning into something akin to Touhou extra stages by the time he gets even halfway. This is a challenge we won't know if he's succeeded in overcoming until he's made more chapters, so we can only hope.
@@jacobesterson Undyne the Undying is nothing compared to either of them, I can see why some people would find her challenging, but harder than Jevil and Spamton NEO? That's a big fat no-no there chief.
I love that this shows that the neo body was actually significantly powerful, its just that we became so powerful in undertale during genocide that it was just 1 shot it due to its lower heath and defense.

Answering "No" to Susie's question after this fight gave me goosebumps when Ralsei tells Kris to calm down because Kris is screaming. It feels as if Kris is slowly losing their mind from these hidden bosses... and after collecting those shadow crystals or whatever the fuck they're called, there will probably be an alternate ending once Deltarune is completed to "reward" the player for defeating these maniacs. Can't wait to see Chapter 3's hidden boss. EDIT: Why the fuck was Ralsei so calm after that fight? Even Susie was freaked out. Ralsei was acting pretty weird this chapter, and I know I'm not the only one who noticed barely anybody in this chapter talks to Ralsei or acknowledges his existence outside of Kris, Susie and Lancer (with the exception of Noelle questioning who Susie is hanging out with, the coathangerguy, and Queen at the end of the game when she's relaxing with Lancer).
Ralsei clearly knows more than he's letting on. It's far too early for me to make any big theories, but the secret bosses have so far been associated with the themes of subjugation (Jevil was imprisoned, Spamton was a literal metaphor for a puppet on strings), and in general all of them have been locked far away from society. Every time Kris has removed their SOUL, it's to escape control of the player and function as any other character. It could be that after the fight, Kris was subconsciously aware they were still being controlled, or maybe they're aware of what's been happening when their SOUL is removed.
On the topic of the secret bosses, what SERIOUSLY worries me is that if you pay attention to the crafting shop, there's only one item that can't be crafted by the end of chapter 2: The Twisted Blade, which requires the complete dark crystal and *the thorn ring*. It even keeps the same "Trance" status effect from the thorn ring, which is what halves the cost of ice magic and allows access to snowgrave.
My question is: Why is Ralsei the only one that is okay with not staying on the path? When I got ask the question: Is everythin ok? I was like NO RALSEI IS FLOATING DO YOU NOT SEE THIS And after comforting me, Ralsei is like Ok Im gonna walk back but on the path this time no need to worry
@@ionsai3114 ralsei has a LOT of enigma. Is he a darkners ? he can actually move from dark world to dark world without being revert back to it's old form no ? could we trust him ? After all, his story about the titan might be a lie ? what the deals with it's own world ? pure darkness ? what does it mean ? what is the room upstairs it hides ? Why does he look like asriel but younger ? Why does he begin in a city desert and somehow KNOWS legend from the city ?
Toby outdid himself. He references Mettaton’s family tone, as well as a bit of Undyne the Undying’s theme, too. Spamton does have a lot of determination. All that while keeping the Deltarune ditty AND spamton’s theme. Thats a lot of stuff to juggle
Just got done beating Spamton Neo. Fun boss fight, and my god this whole game has just been hitting me in the feels. I like that this mix uses the same instruments and melody parts of the Mettaton Neo fight which was very shortlived in Undertale.
i find this fight kind of ominous in the big picture of the game the game starts by telling you that you arent in control of your actions, and its true for the entirely of chapter 1 until you fight an imprisoned being of chaos, who gives you a meaningful choice between whether you should get the knife or the armor. this is the only part of the chapter where you really have any choice even if you dont fight him, sheam says that you "might have fought him and just dont remember it" in chapter 2 (if you get big shot's crystal in chapter 2 and not jevil's crystal) chapter 2 clearly has more meaningful choice with consequences. depending on a few choices in the game berdly gets different injuries in the real world. he has a fried wing if you hurt queen, for example. the player has much more freedom than they originally did, for good and bad. there's also the town, which changes depending on how many enemies you reduced to EXP. there are other big and impactful choices done throughout the game, but its feels like the jevil exposure has been what's giving kris and the gang more freedom in chapter 2. the ominous part of the chapter is this fight. as powerful as the NEO body is, spamton is still restricted to being a puppet on a string, and has limited freedom because of it. a LOT of attention is drawn to this, how despite becoming super powerful, he isn't free. and whats ominous is how in the pacifist battle, he sees kris and co cutting him free as an act of generosity. yet, the things giving him a lack of freedom were what were keeping him alive. he immediately dies after all the wires are cut his pursuit of freedom ends up killing him in the end yet, jevil seemed to have undone some of the chains keeping kris captive, and the party is slowly gaining their own freedom. i find it creepy how this could easily be an ominous metaphor for things to come ...actually, everything about spamley is pretty creepy, but this is a different kind of creepy than the alternate encounter, or the first encounter. much more of a subtle "i dont like where this is going" kind of creepy, than "everything with this scenario or character is off putting".
You also forgot that after the pacifist route in Spamton's fight Kris is visibly disturbed. When asked if they're alright if YOU pick yes it's strained but if YOU choose no Kris screams it out because they are not okay. You have shown Kris there's no way to take back control without "cutting the strings" Kris has no idea how to get rid of you without killing themselves. Whether they like it or not they need you and they hate it.
@@zenoblues7787 holy shit, does this mean we might fight Kris at chapter 7 as the final boss or something? It's just a guess but the gameplay may be pointing to that direction.
@@redhotdanger2394 At the very least I would expect something along the lines of Kris progressively resisting our control more and more as chapters go on. A boss fight would be a good climax but the game makes a point of showing we can't control monsters only give them commands. Maybe the vessel from chapter 1 could make a last minute return.
Me during the Normal Route: Huh! So our good buddy Spamton is the secret boss of this chapter. Fun! Me during the Snowgrave Route: I DONT WANT TO BE A BIG SHOT ANYMORE!
it took me three hours to get through this guy’s fight (i’m not joking, i am very bad at bullet hell) but i never got sick of this theme. i especially love the usage of ‘power of neo’ and ‘dummy!’ in this piece. there are other motifs in there (i’m pretty sure ‘the world revolving’ and a hair of ‘hopes and dreams’ are floating around) but those two in particular really help drive the piece along.
I love that spamton NEO is just an amalgam of so many previous characters and they're all represented in this song, he's like Jevil just in the fact that he's a secret superboss (who may have both been influenced by Gaster in some way) He's like Mettaton in just both being media presence type characters, with Mettaton being an entertainer, and Spamton being a TV/Online salesperson, both focused on drawing in an "audience". He's like the ghost Dummy through his erratic behaviour and that he's a puppet. (a ventriloquist dummy in his normal form, and a marionette in his NEO form) AND he also is similar due to the fact that he possesses an object to live in and through it, with Spamton possessing the NEO robot and Dummy possessing, well, the basic combat Dummy. Lastly, some minor similarities to final boss Asriel in Undertale's true pacifist ending in the fact that the he has an attack that changes up the screen and sucks you in.
The giant screen attack was also in Jevil (“Final Chaos” where the screen is filled with falling Jevilsknives that explodes when they touch the bottom. The last one was a giant Jevilsknife that falls slowly and makes the screen fade to white before the attack ends and gives you your turn) and makes me wonder if every secret boss will have an ultimate attack using their main gimmick/weapon that covers the entire screen and fades to white on the final hit at the end of the attack…
He also has in common with mad dummy that he 1) is found in garbage-related places 2) is basically a random encounter in his 1st appearance 3) has no friends 4) gets a more humanoid body upgrade (mad Mew Mew) for a bonus fight. Also, about Jevil: 1) a slowed the world revolving plays in his shop (and at the end of the battle). 2) they both have 'the air crackles with freedom' as a flavour text. 3) both have the same kind of voice(!)work. 4) both learned of 'freedom', but Jevil found comfort in the chaos whereas Spamton wanted to become more free
His connections to Mad Dummy are even more interesting with the themes of manipulation/possession throughout Chapter 2. Kris is possessed by the Player for nearly the entire game, and while not directly possessed himself, Spamton is obviously being manipulated by a greater force(that may be Gaster).
I never realized that..but that has been their driving inspiration, freedom. Nice catch, maybe it will be an occurring them for next 5 (still can't believe theres gonna be 5 other chapters, jesus Toby)
Every secret boss so far yearns for freedom, but the player controlling Kris keeps meeting with the message that their "choices don't matter". I think there's a connection there somewhere.
@@sarrakitty Even Kris starts shaking and Susie comments after the Neo fight, that after Spamtron tells Kris that they can hopefully remove their strings. Some people speculate that its the player, the soul who is the puppeteer to Kris, or maybe the knight? But its likely the Knight could be Kris's true personality.
Spamton did not get a laugh out of me like it did so many people i've seen. His dialogue to me, from start to finish in our first encounter, was genuinely disturbing to me. You can kind of tell the difference between a character made purely for a joke, and something that's a little off. Spamton's dialogue constantly eluded to several things that a normal one-off joke character should not and would not know. The dialogue, behavior and his battle theme felt... Hysterical. Needless to say he triggered how many of my damn alarms? That was clearly to me no simple one-off fight.
This character felt *incredibly* off to me. So much so that while the scene where you cut all his wires, while still being quite unsettling, felt totally in character. And yet, every single time he did something really off it made me laugh.
He's basically a corrupted program, but there are times where his base program manages to push through the corruption. (specifically any time he's speaking properly)
He's a character you can immediately tell there's a story to him when talking for the first time. It's hard to explain. Some characters are clearly weirdos just because, but Spamton is one who's immediately clear that there's something wrong with him for a reason.
This is one of those songs that never gets grating even though the battle is hard enough you'll be listening to it for hours. I'm still jamming even after the 50th time I die to his GODDAMN NOSE
I love how basically everyone's first impression of Spamton was "Oh what a funny little guy" but then slowly realized that no, there's more to unpack, and it's a LOT
Spamton's backstory gets ultra depressing when you consider that every Darkner feels it is their purpose to serve Lightners and be useful. Spamton, as an Addison at one point, has his whole purpose being designed around 'advertising' and being able to fulfill that purpose. But he literally sucked at the one thing he felt was his duty to accomplish. So his desperation to make a deal at any cost that allowed him to fulfill that advertising role is not particularly born out of desire to be better than others, but rather a desire to succeed at the one thing he was programmed to do. Then he realized there was more to the Dark World than advertising (eg. "Seeing too far") and that he didn't necessarily require being bound to this duty, that there was more to life than servitude. That is his taste of autonomy, the closest to being a Lightner that he can reach. And then he desperately pursues that autonomy despite being in a world that will never allow that to happen, and goes mad from the knowledge, praying and desperation. So it makes sense as to why he wants to take over the city: it's the most powerful and autonomous role he can think of. He can call the shots for himself. But he just didn't understand that even the Queen acts as a servant for Lightners. He really is trapped in the system and has no way out, only the crushing reality that he can't do anything plagues him. Jevil follows similar servant vs desiring autonomy lines. He's the court jester, servant of the kings. Yet he wants to be more, to be able to do 'anything'. He possibly was also trying to disrupt the monarchy like Spamton but got locked away by his only confidant. There's a great theme of betrayal by past companions, desiring autonomy in a world of servitude, and the madness that comes with such alienation and individuality. Overall: good soup, good soup. Can't wait for more to come.

He sure as hell isn’t the hero, he even says as much to Kris, taunting that this is only happening because he sold the Thorny Ring that enabled the Snowgrave attack. He is very much the unstable villain I knew him to be the moment we encountered him.
So glad we got the Neo genocide fight we missed out on in Undertale with Mettaton. Now we have super tough fights for blue, green and yellow hearts in the series (purple heart next???)
Speaking of purple heart, has Muffet EVER been mentioned in this game? Considering this is somewhat like sequel/alternate universe to Undertale, i would think that all the previous bosses would be included.
It is so cool that both Jevil and Spamton have ACTUAL special attacks. The idea of a character having a super strong finishing move is often teased, but rarely shown in both Undertale and Deltarune. When it actually happens, you're frantic in your attempt to evade the first time you see it. To me, it feels like a special attack from any monster/darkner is a culmination of THEIR determination. Brief as it may be, they momentarily manage to tower over your all-powerful soul with their own willpower, encompassing the battle in their attack and making you look PUNY during it.
@@heartbae87 Wouldn't it be cool if they actually COULD kill you, but only if your HP has been reduced to 1 before the final blow? Like the game is coded to check for that during the attack.
To be fair, most major characters do have an ultimate attack but they're just very hesitant to use them outside of the big evil route option versions of their battles since they treat it as their last resort move when trying to 100% kill the player. As funny as Sans' line about not starting off with an ultimate attack is, there is a reason to not do so: if your opponent can survive your ultimate attack, nothing you follow it up with is going to suffice to finish the job.
Here's something I wonder, does Spamton have Jevil's theme motifs, or do Spamton and Jevil share the "secret boss" motif? I guess we'll find out in chapter 3
@@monkey_blu seeing as how jevils overworld theme (the circus) has the same motif as the one used in keygen and big shot I think it's going to be a requiring theme for all secret bosses.
@@neopalm2050 I was in better shape than that haha. It's a little harder in the genocide run FYI. Didn't know this at the time but you get a free heal by hitting 'F1'
I love how this song is basically a hyper Remix of so many other songs. They come together so, so freaking well to create an extremely unnerving but very good beat that describes Spamtons character as a whole very well. All I can say is that TobyFox is letting his genius shine once again very, very well
Something that really excites me is that you get to use the yellow soul in this fight, potentially meaning that every chapters secret boss may have their own soul mechanic used in their fight. Some more things there might be to support this is that there are 7 chapters, which is the exact same as the number of souls. Jevil was a normal red soul battle, and Spamton Neo uses yellow, I hope every secret boss uses a separate one, perhaps even using unseen cyan and orange forms (the two soul forms you couldn’t use before). I always felt like the soul forms were underutilized in Undertale and should’ve been expanded and really made use of, they only really did this with the blue and green forms, with the purple and yellow ones never being used used outside of the Muffet and Mettaton battles. I can’t wait to possibly see new and interesting fights using these mechanics
while the green soul was only used on undyne's fight it was more than just a way to change dodging. it also changed the outcome of the story. you can't run away when you're green so it's more important than just only being able to move left and right on three lines
Maybe with green, you only get a certain amount of blocks and you can repair the shield with TP And maybe with purple you can cut the string into segments, making attacks unable to reach you while also limiting your own movement options
@@BerryyyyyjamMy idea for the patience soul Is that, you can't move, there are blocks around you, every click you do they become blue, then white and ykw, there will be different mechanics for them like teleporters, blocks you have to click for a specific amt of time to stop or become Blue etc...
Can we just take a minute to appreciate just how absolutely amazing Toby Fox's music has gotten since Undertale? And that's saying something, since Undertale's OST was pretty damn good too. Maybe I'm just weird, but I find it kinda heartwarming being able to see Toby's development as a game maker, musician, and storywriter progress as far as it is, and being able to experience it firsthand (kinda).
the only way i could beat this fool was by immediately defending, then spamming xsnap to the best of my ability while furiously attempting to get tp and heal with ralsei. then again, i wasn't quite using the most well-prepared of base setups
Impressive how this song, depending on which context you hear it in, can have completely different moods to it. SPOILERS BTW In the normal Secret Boss with the entire party, the song sounds like the descent into madness, sort of like The World Revolving. However, in the Snowgrave route, it comes off to me as Spamton saying "well, you gave me ultimate power, and now you're trying to screw me over. Guess you have to die now." And acts as an epic final boss song.
despite being much weaker than the real Mettaton NEO, it shows how strong NEO actually is. Frisk only 1-shotted Mettaton in Undertale due to how strong you are in the genocide route
@@sinteleon yeah, in the Snowgrave route, Noelle would have to power to instakill Spamton, the only problem is that she isnt there for the fight and only saves Kris at the end
The only problem I found with this song is that, after finishing a loop, I always find myself saying "ok, just one more loop" *it's never just one more loop xD*
0:55 - 1:22 I cannot be the only one who quietly hums: "Now we are finally free! Everyone knows the best place to hide is insanity! Meanwhile, the world will spin Hypnotizing, terrorizing Those locked within!"
One of the things I like about Deltarune's secret bosses is whereas most game's secret bosses are just fun easter egg things that don't have much relevancy at all, Spamton and Jevil are actually characters that provide another layer to the story that you wouldn''t otherwise have known, and add to the narrative rather than being some one-off thing.
Hoping that Chapters 1-6 will each have unique freedom-motif-influenced-by-gaster(?) secret bosses and that Chapter 7 will have them all team up like a Spiderman Sinister Six to kick your ass.
Oh man having all six bosses at once, seeing the eldest Jevil all the way to whatever the sixth one will be, and having it be an absolute worst time for any bullet hell player!
I feel that may be too... chaotic. I personally think that Ch. 7's will be Gaster himself, only defeatable with something obtained from 6 Shadow Crystals that Seam makes.
The way that Spamton NEO's body just sits there for a moment if you manage to cut all of his strings chilled me. I personally was expecting something nice to happen after we cut his strings, like Spamton would revert to who he was before or something, but no. The background cuts to black and his lifeless body hits the floor. Spamton couldn't break his own strings, which I found really ominous in terms of Kris. Without their SOUL, *without their strings*, they kind of just... limp around. In the times of the game where they remove their SOUL from their body, they're barely able to move anywhere normally, looking like they're in pain, looking like it's a struggle to even move around; Almost as if they need us, the SOUL. Why else would the soul be right back in Kris' body after the ending of Chapter 1? Why else would they stuff it back into their body in Chapter 2 several times? How chilled Kris seems after defeating Spamton NEO really seems to hit this in on the nail, as they're obviously shaken up by Spamton's words. What will happen if Kris manages to successfully cut their strings? A puppet without strings is a puppet without purpose.
this makes me wonder if there'll be more differences in the story depending on if you fought the secret bosses or not, because if you don't then Kris won't know the danger of "having their strings cut", because they didn't see what happened to jevil, spamton etc
This fight took me a day to finish (with a couple hours each day) and at least over two dozen attempts (I did the harder variation where you have to fight him with just Kris). That said, normally, I'd have rage quit or something after a dozen attempts, but honestly, the fight was one of the most fun ones I've ever done, despite the difficulty. Even now, I kinda want to go back and try once again. I dont think I've had so much fun before with such a challenging boss in a video game in a long long time. Toby Fox is a legend.
@@edward9487 Finished him off in front of my friends on the switch the day after it released. Felt like a badass doing it in front of a bunch of people on my first try too!
The reason why mettaton NEO wasn’t able to even withstand a single hit wasn’t because we grew too strong. It was because alphys was only a scientist, she wasn’t able to replicate true determination. But with Spamton he used the power of an old lightner dream. He didn’t just harness determination. He became it. He had always strived to be the [[NUMBER #1 RATED SALESMAN 1997]] and now that the power was finally in his hands he had realised that even all of this wasn’t enough to achieve his goal, so he attacked kris so he could finally get to the goal he had been waiting his whole life to achieve! To finally become a [[BIG SHOT]] once again. Or atleast that’s what I interpret it as lol
[Spoiler Warning, Just In Case?] Finally, I was hoping for an old soul mode to returned, and it happened. It was starting to feel a little bit stale with just the red soul mode and I wasn't sure if the other soul modes wouldn't show up. Plus I loved the new charge ability the yellow soul mode received. Also, it's interesting we had the King in the first chapter, and then we had a Hotland like area the chapter after. Maybe the chapters would be going through the areas that mirror Undertale's area but in reverse.
So instead of going further towards the surface, you're getting farther from it? You're entering the cold depths of the darkness instead of the warmth of the sunlight? That's pretty cool actually. I actually made a thing about how each area in Undertale gets progressively warmer than the last. The Ruins are the coldest (really cold stone depths in a snowy area), then Snowdin (for obvious reasons), then Waterfall (kinda humid, but still a little chilly), then Hotland (for even more obvious reasons), then the CORE (Literally a lava-powered reactor core that is so hot that it requires huge chunks of ice to be thrown into it in order to keep from exploding).
1:08 I think he’s coming for me, answer the phone, I can’t explain until you’re all alone. He pulls the strings and makes them ring, until your heart gets ripped! Imho, spamton was NOT NEARLY as hard as jevil. I actually won on my first try without any prior knowledge about the battle, whilst Jevil kicked my ass with me practically knowing all of his attacks from watching videos
@@imnightmare101 imma be honest with you. Even in the alternate route(I'm assuming you're referring to snow grave route) he's not that hard(at least in comparison to Jevil. One thing people dont mention, is WHO is controlling spamton? We know we control kris. But spamton tried to run from his strings. Which broke him. Like a useless toy. Whoever was controlling spamton, was practically using him as a character in a game. Our character versus his
I don't think anybody has noticed yet but from like 0:18 to 0:23 you can hear a "Wow!" in the background and it sounds very similar to the same wow! from earthbound "your name please" when you finish the survey!
This boss is just freakin' insane, in theme, gameplay, and mind. Yeah Spamton's not as hard as Jevil, who took me 3 attempts and this one only took me 2, but the attacks are so insanely creative. Plus being able to use the yellow soul and literally use BIG SHOTS is so awesome! And yeah that leads into what I love about this battle, it's basically Mettaton NEO reincarnate. He's in a body very similar to Mettaton NEO, he's literally called Spamton NEO (and even says "Power of NEO" at one point), he has you use the yellow soul during his fight, and he even has a "heart attack" where he shows you his heart and you have to shoot it. Not to mention the music references Mettaton and ghost related things so much. At 0:14 the song uses the same sax from Ghost Fight, and the ghost synth from the same song at 0:20. 0:28 uses the Megaman soundfont used in Death by Glamour, and it straight up uses samples from Power of NEO at 0:55 and 2:02, and Dummy! at 1:41, 1:47, 2:16. This really feels like Toby's heartfelt answer to us wanting a full Mettaton NEO fight, without ruining the story he created for Undertale. Also one last thing, if you go to Swatch (the shop guy in the Queen's Castle) after defeating Spamton NEO, he'll tell you that the body that Spamton takes over was designed by a Lightner. You know that house that looks like Napstablook's house? And that easter egg with someone accidentally leaving their diary in the library. I legit sat before selecting the first command the first time fighting him just to listen to the music. Hearing the TWR motif while seeing relics of Spamton's glory days passing by in the back while looking at the doll hung to the ceiling was quite a haunting feeling I feel can never be topped.
I have learned something about undertale and deltarune bosses, that you should fear them if they have the following: Voice acting Lyrics Sick beats Leitmotifs from other hard bosses Chaos is mentioned Freedom is mentioned It normally occurs after certain events have been triggered (such as fetch quests or murder.) It sounds like a final boss theme (doesn't always) And lastly, you die more than once to the same attack. (Note: not all of these are needed to know you are on a hard boss.)
The more I think about it, the more I feel like the Spamton NEO encounter in *that thing* feels more fleshed out (spoilers below obvs): - Most of Spamton NEO’s normal dialogue on the normal route boils down to “haha i’m just foreshadowing the attack i’m going to use”, while Geno NEO actually has dialogue for the situation, until it loops ofc. - Minor detail, but his ultimate attack in Geno has WRECK and SPEW in the bottom left corner while it’s absent normally, which honestly makes me feel like his Geno fight is more “complete” in a way. - Deal Gone Wrong plays at the correct speed in his Geno encounter and not the normal route, where it’s slightly faster. - Geno contains a second phase that normal route lacks. - I get this one is subjective, but I feel like his humor shines more in Geno tbh. - This one’s a bit of a nitpick, but the place you fight him in normally is a bit weird. Like, why the hell is there a giant city and rails in the basement, it just feels like a reskinned Berdly fight while the real one is *literally right in front of the fountain,* which is kinda crazy enough to rival the somewhat 3D arena of Jevil. - Also, he’s literally NEO. Spamton was one of my favorite characters in Deltarune chapter 2. I was intrigued from him since the first time I met him in the game. His boss fights were cool too, I loved the NEO version the most. His first boss fight was a great introduction too. Not as hard as chapter 1's secret boss but fun!
what's super cool is I can faintly hear "pull the strings and make them ring" during a certain portion of the song. around here 1:11. that's so neat I haven't heard it until now

I love how this theme is basically a mashup of other boss themes in the series: Now's your chance, Power of NEO, World Revolving, and I might hear a hint of Death By Glamour in there? Honestly, this track is absolutely amazing.
1:09 “I think he’s coming for me, Answer the phone. I can’t explain until you’re all alone (He) pulls the strings and makes Them ring until your heart can’t keep breaking up! *The air crackles with freedom.

There was also a (probably coincidental) Jevil reference during the werewerewire fight, "the air crackles with fighting spirit" obviously being different from "the air crackles with freedom" that Spamton NEO and Jevil use.
@@calbum7078 most likely coincidence but that werewerewire is really a hard miniboss in the rematch so maybe?
also this song has a bit of The World Revolving in it
Spamton and Kris have a lot in common, and I love how the game highlights that. Both being controlled by beings far greater than themselves and both so desperate for any chance to break free that they do dangerous and harmful things to both themself and those around them
Also the fact Kris is actually effected emotionally really stands out
I feel genuinely bad for Kris, I really do.

Both forms of this fight are basically the same but somehow represent 2 very different versions of the character, the normal route has a insanely optimistic puppet born for stardom, who wishes to break free.
Personal theory, Spamton secret boss is probably a culmination of unused Mettaton NEO attack patterns but with a stunning dash of spamton magic
I feel like Mettaton Neo’s attacks are split between Spamton and the Queen. The Queen uses the leg attacks from EX, and Spamton’s attacks take more from the Shmup attacks in EX’s fight

On the topic of the secret bosses, what SERIOUSLY worries me is that if you pay attention to the crafting shop, there's only one item that can't be crafted by the end of chapter 2:
The Twisted Blade, which requires the complete dark crystal and *the thorn ring*. It even keeps the same "Trance" status effect from the thorn ring, which is what halves the cost of ice magic and allows access to snowgrave.
@@PaperFlare The thorn ring has a trance status effect? Creepy.
My question is: Why is Ralsei the only one that is okay with not staying on the path? When I got ask the question: Is everythin ok?

@Anakin PogWalker search deltarune chapter 2 genocide route.
There's also influences of The World Revolving and Dummy! in this song.
shhh dont spoil
The robot body he possess to take NEO form is obviously Metatton's
i find this fight kind of ominous in the big picture of the game
the game starts by telling you that you arent in control of your actions, and its true for the entirely of chapter 1
until you fight an imprisoned being of chaos, who gives you a meaningful choice between whether you should get the knife or the armor. this is the only part of the chapter where you really have any choice
even if you dont fight him, sheam says that you "might have fought him and just dont remember it" in chapter 2 (if you get big shot's crystal in chapter 2 and not jevil's crystal)
chapter 2 clearly has more meaningful choice with consequences. depending on a few choices in the game berdly gets different injuries in the real world. he has a fried wing if you hurt queen, for example. the player has much more freedom than they originally did, for good and bad. there's also the town, which changes depending on how many enemies you reduced to EXP.
there are other big and impactful choices done throughout the game, but its feels like the jevil exposure has been what's giving kris and the gang more freedom in chapter 2.
the ominous part of the chapter is this fight. as powerful as the NEO body is, spamton is still restricted to being a puppet on a string, and has limited freedom because of it. a LOT of attention is drawn to this, how despite becoming super powerful, he isn't free. and whats ominous is how in the pacifist battle, he sees kris and co cutting him free as an act of generosity.
yet, the things giving him a lack of freedom were what were keeping him alive. he immediately dies after all the wires are cut
his pursuit of freedom ends up killing him in the end
yet, jevil seemed to have undone some of the chains keeping kris captive, and the party is slowly gaining their own freedom. i find it creepy how this could easily be an ominous metaphor for things to come
...actually, everything about spamley is pretty creepy, but this is a different kind of creepy than the alternate encounter, or the first encounter. much more of a subtle "i dont like where this is going" kind of creepy, than "everything with this scenario or character is off putting".
Makes me wonder how is Toby gonna do chapter 3-5 then. Makes me more excited
you dont get any EXP in Deltarune. you just get stronger, it doesnt say you got any EXP.
Maybe the vessel from chapter 1 could make a last minute return.

it took me three hours to get through this guy’s fight (i’m not joking, i am very bad at bullet hell) but i never got sick of this theme. i especially love the usage of ‘power of neo’ and ‘dummy!’ in this piece. there are other motifs in there (i’m pretty sure ‘the world revolving’ and a hair of ‘hopes and dreams’ are floating around) but those two in particular really help drive the piece along.
if you listen carefully at 3:03 you can hear parts of "the world revolving"
How would you feel doing it without anyone helping Kris?
Got to be honest he took me two tries
While I'm surprised I managed it on my first try.
Though I'm sweating quite a bit
@@picoultimate7707 Shhhhhhh
The attack making the whole screen an attack zone or whatever is also in Jevil's fight so there's also that
The giant screen attack was also in Jevil (“Final Chaos” where the screen is filled with falling Jevilsknives that explodes when they touch the bottom.
And to think, this is only Chapter TWO of the SEVEN (currently confirmed) chapters..!
Both Jevil and Spamton have freedom as something important to them
I never realized that..but that has been their driving inspiration, freedom. Nice catch, maybe it will be an occurring them for next 5 (still can't believe theres gonna be 5 other chapters, jesus Toby)
They both realised that they are trapped, after interacting with a "strange man"
Every secret boss so far yearns for freedom, but the player controlling Kris keeps meeting with the message that their "choices don't matter".
But its likely the Knight could be Kris's true personality.
they even share a flavor text
"*The air crackles with freedom."
I'm pretty sure he was designed to make you feel that way.
Queen and burghly were made to be funny characters. Spamton was not. He’s supposed to make you very uncomfortable/unsettled
This is one of those songs that never gets grating even though the battle is hard enough you'll be listening to it for hours. I'm still jamming even after the 50th time I die to his GODDAMN NOSE
That damn mouth is the real killer for me, everything else just goes in a nice straight line.

I love how basically everyone's first impression of Spamton was "Oh what a funny little guy" but then slowly realized that no, there's more to unpack, and it's a LOT
A big lot.
Brief as it may be, they momentarily manage to tower over your all-powerful soul with their own willpower, encompassing the battle in their attack and making you look PUNY during it.
too bad the special attacks are coded to be unable to kill you XD (they deal a % of your health as damge so you literally can't die)
@@heartbae87 Wouldn't it be cool if they actually COULD kill you, but only if your HP has been reduced to 1 before the final blow? Like the game is coded to check for that during the attack.
Funny enough spamtons final attack is tbh one of his easier attacks

@@JaxontheOkay true, although I don’t know how they would incorporate something like that because in deltarune you can’t run from fights at all
Maybe with green, you only get a certain amount of blocks and you can repair the shield with TP
And maybe with purple you can cut the string into segments, making attacks unable to reach you while also limiting your own movement options
I have an idea for the orange attack
So basically your soul will have a small outline, You can only move when a bullet is near the outline
@@BerryyyyyjamMy idea for the patience soul Is that, you can't move, there are blocks around you, every click you do they become blue, then white and ykw, there will be different mechanics for them like teleporters, blocks you have to click for a specific amt of time to stop or become Blue etc...
It's a good thing that big boss fights like Jevil and Spamton have great themes, since I have to hear it for countless attempts XD
This guy isn’t that hard as long as you keep your health up, but even if it’s easier than Jevil, he’s probably the coolest fight in the game

In the normal Secret Boss with the entire party, the song sounds like the descent into madness, sort of like The World Revolving. However, in the Snowgrave route, it comes off to me as Spamton saying "well, you gave me ultimate power, and now you're trying to screw me over. Guess you have to die now." And acts as an epic final boss song.

@@BluebirdBT could also be the 6 eggs we'll probably get during the events of the game, seeing as how we can get one in chapter 2 as well
@@SirLamington I would be down for a "secret boss rush" but fighting them all at the same time would also be interesting.

This is the closest thing we’ll ever get to a actual Mettaton NEO fight.
Never stop with the amazing secret boss themes, Toby
I love that earthbound ''WOW'' sample
Are You Sure?
Yep No
I feel like 0:55 - 1:08 is not just a reference to Jevil. But instead will be a reoccurring part in all the secret boss themes

If you think about it, this fight is kind of toby fox's replacement for the mettaton NEO fight.
2:16 This is the best part of the song by far. The calm bit to the intense part. It's so damn good
Obviously this boss battle is basically Mettaton NEO if he didn't die in one slap. A really powerful slap from killing so many monsters.

The air crackles with freedom.
[Spoiler Warning, Just In Case?]
Finally, I was hoping for an old soul mode to returned, and it happened.
It’s more like the CORE than Hotland imo

The fact that you can hear leitmotifs for Battle Against a True Hero and The Power of NEO is very fitting in the Snowgrave route
holy shit this is amazing. it's even looped perfectly, which is extremely rare.
I have learned something about undertale and deltarune bosses, that you should fear them if they have the following:
Voice acting
Lyrics
Sick beats
Leitmotifs from other hard bosses
Chaos is mentioned
Freedom is mentioned
It normally occurs after certain events have been triggered (such as fetch quests or murder.)
It sounds like a final boss theme (doesn't always)
And lastly, you die more than once to the same attack.
(Note: not all of these are needed to know you are on a hard boss.)
The more I think about it, the more I feel like the Spamton NEO encounter in *that thing* feels more fleshed out (spoilers below obvs):
- Most of Spamton NEO’s normal dialogue on the normal route boils down to “haha i’m just foreshadowing the attack i’m going to use”, while Geno NEO actually has dialogue for the situation, until it loops ofc.
Guess which route is the only one Mettaton NEO pops up in?
