How it would work during break time? I recently bought it as I looked for a super light isolation to put in the backpack but it’s the unisolated sleeves that worries me
I have two Atom SLs. The 1st gen has different pocket construction and a different inner liner. I love both ones but for many active use cases Proton FL & Lightweight are just better. It cuts some wind too, but is uniformly more breathable insulation and fleece-like liner, and has sizeable chest pocket(s). Probably one of the best light sport jackets ever made.
I have recently got this jacket and it is water resistant. How long does it stay water resistant for, I’m assuming for a extended period of time but I am unsure
Hi Alan, indeed, it is DWR coated. However, this will wear off over time, and you might need to treat it again. I never did that. I always felt that it keeps up for 1-2 hours if you have a drizzle. If it is a full-on cloudburst, I’d immediately put a proper jacket over it. It’s a question of minutes until you’re soaking wet. That being said, the insulation is still okay even when wet, but of course, you’ll lose a lot of heat.
Arcteryx has a very straight cut and since I have wider shoulders I need the L. With Northface I can wear M or L. So if you have more a V-Shape upper body I’d go with L, if not I’d go with M. If you want to use it in Winter for multi day traverses with some thicker Merino underneath, I’d also go with L. Hope this helps.
I don’t think the Arcteryx naming convention is as straightforward as you suggest; in fact I think it’s downright confusing and getting worse. Take the Beta line. Beta LT is presumably for light. But now we have a new “Beta Lightweight” which is slightly lighter weight than the LT. Ok, I guess. But then the plain “Beta” is significantly lighter weight than the Beta Lightweight. What?! Makes no sense. 🤷♂
Yeah, the current lineup for spring doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me either. I have the hope that they might get back to their roots some day, currently it's a mess.
Right?? 😅 I asked customer services about that and apparently the Beta lightweight (formerly known as beta SL) is heavier than the Beta (formerly known as the LT) because it’s made of a tougher fabric - but to me that doesn’t make sense - shouldn’t the heavier fabric be on the heavier jacket that’s made to handle more severe conditions? Make it make sense! Edit: the beta lightweight is £100 more expensive than the LT which is the opposite of usual arcteryx pricing, probably because the higher denier, heavier fabric used in its construction is more expensive.
Interesting, I have two SLs (although between 3 and 5 year old) and they are definitely lighter than the LT. From SL to MX/SV they had the option to produce every piece of gear in 4-6 different weights, not sure why they are messing around with a proven concept (instead of getting stuff back that would actually be nice to have, like a proper belay jacket or belay pants). 🤷🏻♂️
This is a really solid review. Thanks for taking the time to make it.
Thank you for watching!

Does the Atom SL have bungee draw cords at the waist?
Yes it has

Hi how can I choose the size? I usually wear M north face and it will be my first arc teryx.

This! The old naming worked for me quite well.
