Great Lakes Dragaway: A Historic Track | Chicago News

Built-in 1955 by veterans who saw a track in California, Great Lakes Dragaway is packed with history.
But beyond that, it is a track that allows for any beginner to get behind the wheel. Anyone who owns a vehicle is welcome to race. Chicago News talked with Claire StGeorge, a manager at Great Lakes Dragaway, about what makes this track a memorable experience.

Great place for kids. My early years at Martin US 131 Dragway. Now I live a mile from the Paris…Dragaway, and loving it. Ahhh, the sounds of summer. 😉👍🏻💕

In the summer of 1980, at age of 17, I raced my 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner at Great Lakes, and my buddy Brad raced his 1969 440 Dodge SuperBee. We ran low 13's mostly, both of us had 4 speed cars, it was more fun than serious. Broadway Bob was a riot, always had a beer in his hand. Brought us free Pepsi's in the pit when it was about 110 degrees one Saturday in July.

Grew up about 10 miles away in Paddock Lake. Spent a lot of time here, even have a couple time slips from my dad racing there.
