I fell for this loan thing and got a degree in worthlessness. I have 19,000 to pay back still, I am 36 and I graduated at 26. Don't do it! save yourself! You are better off working for 4 years and living with your parents and putting all your earnings away so you can start a business....don't bother with college unless you become some sort of engineer or go to a trade school where you are pretty much guaranteed a job.

Mine is still pretty high, 18,000. I put it into deferment a few years ago which was a big mistake because it climbed back up. I pay 85 dollars a month on it. My husband payed all his student loans back a few years ago he had 42,000 in loans. We ended up paying his loan and our home off. We only have this last loan but it is 3 percent loan and a low payment. You will laugh but I am back in school I have a year to do to get my BSW and going into Gerontology. We live in Arizona where there is a need for social workers in the field. So I am racking up around 15,000 more to get the sticker of approval. Seems dumb but it's that or not make more than 15 an hour doing social work but not getting paid for the job...basically I do all the dirt work for a supervisor who gets paid the big bucks because she has the credentials. It really is a catch twenty two. Damned if you do damned if you don't.

15, 20 40k. Big deal! If you choose a major with 1 ounce even of pre-thought even 60,000 in loans should not be a problem to pay off in 10 years. If you want to Go to college make sure the career you're choosing is enough to pay the damn bills. Basic math. You all have Google and you can find it yourself easy

It's not just low income. I come from a middle class family with a single mother who made decent money on paper, but as a single mom she still struggled to pay for our basic expenses. Therefore I could not get decent grants, and had to take out loans for my education. At least low income you can get some form of grant, but if you don't qualify for grant and your parent(s) didn't have the funds set aside for you, you will rack up loans. I have over $40,000 in student loan debt and I graduated with my degree in accounting. I struggle to pay down debt and provide a healthy lifestyle for my family. I look at the $500 I pay every month to student loans and cry because if I even had half that money in my pocket, my life would be so much easier and more fulfilling. There are people who are worse off than me, and I can't imagine how they get by. This is theft clearly - universities have found a way to take away most of your profit of getting the degree and put it back in their pocket to finance dorm and campus remodels that aren't even necessary, and of course line their pockets. They've made it to where you have the same standard of living whether you get a degree or not. I think a lot sometimes life would be better without this cloud of debt over my head. I made an okay wage doing office admin work, and take home pay was probably about the same if you subtract out the loans I am paying off. I am trying my best to save my kids from this situation and giving what I can to a 529 plan. At the rate of tuition hikes that continue to happen every quarter, I don't see how even that will help them. Soon enough only wealthy will have the education and it will keep the poor poor, middle class middle class, and so on. There will be no ability for people who are poor or middle class to improve their lives because education will be out of reach and in fact it already is for many people.
