I was there as an 8 year old absolutely mesmerised by the sights and sounds. We sat at Murray’s corner all day and loved every minute. Even though I was a red blooded Brocky fan at the time those big Falcons sure looked and sounded impressive, until Moffatts caught fire.....
Was there in 77, was 17, went up by train, saw Brock spin out in the same point twice, was so disappointed, but was wrapped next year, sat and watched it at home, went back in 2017, different now!
Mate, as a Holden Man, from a Holden Family, I will deny it - profusely - if you ever tell anyone that occasionally, when no one else is home, I take one of those big Falcons out for a race on my simulator... 😉
IMHO Bathurst is one of the best tracks in the world! It's got everything: undulations, climbs, descents, curvy sections, long straights (Conrod is epic) slow sections very fast sections - so anything you races on it is going to be cool! This race is mad with all the big V8s! Also, I can say with certainty that this is the first race I've ever seen in which an axe was used to repair a car during a race!
Loved the days when an axe was in the pit garage. Was at lakeside raceway in qld and watched Brock and Johnson trade 1st and 2nd a few times half an inch away from each other the whole race and not swap paint. Would have liked Ford to have done a v8 Cortina... the cobras were awesome though.
40 cubic inches can make a big difference at these speeds and pressure. Once the Commodore was sorted, the Falcons were just too big and heavy. The Cobras were an awesome car, but I think the most durable car I ever watched at Bathurst was the Chickadee chickens privateer that only had to pit for fuel and brakes and tyres, and that was it. The rest of the race it spent in front and driving just as well at the end as it was when it started. It was, by far, the most dominant performance in driving, car management and just the fact that the car just didn't miss a beat for the whole race. And it was a privateer as well, so the money was tight too. What a car, and I wish that I owned it, but it is in a museum(I think) and is still revered as one of the best, EVER.
No commodores here! They were much bigger cars than the torana too think you have chickadees chickens in your brain that car was a commodore and it won in 1986. Biggest win was 1979 by Brock in a torana when he won by 6 laps!
just gold this stuff yeah I'm a big Ford fan but the boulbous Ford pig was no match for the rts suspension bling ss coupes they had it all sorted out were as the dog Ford's couldn't iron out there problems hail group c real men real cars no chase no pace car no stopping garbage just pure talent
You are talking absolute shit, the A9X came with a ten bolt fitted buy Holden in production, full rose joint front end, I'll say it again Shit, read the history, Brock and Moffat were pegged for one Illegal front sway bar on the Torana and Moffat was running roller rockers, the only thing custom here is your ability to customise the truth with horse shit.
@knife Road going A9X Toranas have UC floorpans in the rear half and 10 bolt diff from factory, my father owned one for years... Sold in 2008 for $120k... 1 of 13 black 2 door A9X Hatchbacks, only major difference in race car over road car is the gearbox and engine.
You're so right there mate, just how tough were the cobras, they look fast when they're standing still.I bet morris was fair shitting himself in the little torana with the big falcons right up behind him.
If you look at an xb/xc coupe from any angle I don't know many who would describe them as boulbous pigs except you , I have even seen non car lovers admire the shape of these beasts & as for their racing ability you must be a Holden boy as you forget the result from the year before when the " boulbous pigs " crushed the " superior " shitbox toranas with a form 1 2 finish .
JBofBrisbane is right below: at 2:55 this is how it looks like spearing down the straight - panning and zoom lens cameras take that impact of straight speed away from us at every coverage.....
Mrgoupclover. ford lovers get all misty eyed over the so called cobra but take the stripes and paint away and it wasn't even in the same universe as the a9x. lighter car better brakes punching way above its weight. having owned an Ss 308 hatch as my first car and having memory's of a mates xc 351 manual it was chalk and cheese even as road cars to translate that to a race car ford just didn't get it continuing to plug away with the same old formula and with no real interest in funding or development hence the reason as we all know that even a diehard like Moffat got fed up
2:55 - that shot with the helicopter pacing the field along Conrod. One of the best angles ever, but they rarely repeated it.
The cobra was sure a tough looking beast,
NOW THIS IS RACING NOT THE SHIT THEY PRODUCE THESE DAYS
yep sure is good stuff to watch
Amen!
Proper Racing Sedans - we could relate to this!!! F1 is the same - no longer able to relate it. 🤦♂️

😉
Cobra in the race - no longer available for sale...August 1978 saw the demise of three Aussie legends: Charger, Cobra and MINI.
They are worth a mint these days 😊
@@Prognosis__ well they arent worth what they are asking but certainly expensive, stupid money now.

Lots of axe panel work in the slightly older Bathursts :)

i was there, i was only 4 but i still remember it.
This was REAL RACING, not the super cars stuff we have now.

When racing was interesting
Dam. I think I have one of them in my shed.
When racing was exciting to watch and there was a variety of classes. Now its just one big yawn. Bring back group A.
Best opening laps for a race ever.
Yep
Thank you Richie!!

Not sure how anyone could dislike a corner on a race track, particularly one that has made the racing better like The Chase, yet here we are.
And we've got a race going here folks!
The best looking Falcon ever.
the v8 interceptor was!
I recall Dick Johnson being King of the One-Liners making me laugh
awsome thanks
I remember watching this a 10 yr old boy on tv broke lap record last lap

Ford didn't want to do any more development on the Falcon for 1978 after the 1-2 finish in '77 despite Moffat's request.. resulted in poor performance
Fords burned, Holdens kept winning...
Last Bathurst 2019 26 race teams compared to 1978 over 40 cars is Bathurst dying a slow death
Two classes at the time . Super 2 cars cold race alongside
JBofBrisbane is right below: at 2:55 this is how it looks like spearing down the straight - panning and zoom lens cameras take that impact of straight speed away from us at every coverage.....
The Greatest..
I agree as I have one - but these are XC's.....
dodgem cars ...i play this at royal show.
Full race?
Awesome
How cool would that be
It was always Moffit v CAMS
how colin bond forgets how much of a dirty driver he was . now punishes people for less
The biggest cheats always make the toughest umpires. They know how it is faked and what the consequences are.
Ford not holden
It's just a paint job....xb coupes. Don't be fooled by.. pretty cars and outrageous prices to own one
4:20 ax the Toyota's and burn the fords lol
To blurry film
Thats Before Australia got emasculated...
$4,000 for the winner? 😂

Jealous much?
Such a cheap looking car that Dead Brand Holden crap! Go Ford! 2023 and still going!
