One of the most shocking things for me in seminary at SBTS was how many of the gents had not read the whole bible. These guys were training for ministry. I gotta say "the best way to read the old testament" is to read it. Don't get your theology from someone else, get it from the text. Then when you have a pretty good feel for God's self-depiction in his own words, then, and only then, start to look at other people's insights. This is why the doctrine of the perspicuity of the text is so important.
