You would have to put your own router in the garage or run your own Ethernet cable from the garage to wherever you want. Switching from coax to Ethernet (for your router) is as easy as a quick call to FiOS tech support. You could buy a simple long Ethernet cable from Amazon and run it along the baseboards & pick up cable staples/hammer clips at home depot but Verizon techs if they come out can do this no problem for you and quick if it’s too complex
back in the day we used to HAVE to buy routers cuz the ISP would only give us a modem. Since then i have just rented the routers from the cable company/verizon. what the benefit of getting my own router these days?
None. Unless you want to do VLANs with a Unifi router, the Verizon router is more than adequate. You can even buy the Verizon router on eBay and not pay a rental fee. But I put together this guide for anyone who likes to buy their router from BestBuy or has one lying around from switching from Comcast
If you really want to use your own router, you’ll have to get Verizon (or a local AV company or electrician) to run Ethernet from the ONT outside to inside. Or you can buy the G1100 off of eBay to save money every month

Added internet after dropping Cox. So I have a G1100 Fios router. From the ONT, have a Coax cable plugging into the G1100 and also an Ethernet cable. I have a cat5e patch cable going from one of the LAN ports on the G1100 to another router (Turris Omnia). In turn, I have a 24-port gigabit ethernet switch plugged in the Omnia. With everything plugged in, I don’t get anything coming up for OnDemand videos with FIOS. But when I unplug the cat5e patch cable from the back of the G1100, On Demand comes back, but then no internet. Thoughts on this? BTW, my wireless is horrific. If I literally stand right by the G1100, can’t connect phones to the wireless network.
Look at your connections. ONLY put ONE Ethernet cable going from routers LAN port to switch. And don’t have a network cable connecting from one port to another port on the same switch, that creates a network storm where nothing will work. Also what kind of phone are you using?
Also I forgot you’ve got 2 different routers. What features do you need from your router? Verizon routers are really good, try a Speedtest from your PC hardwired to the G1100.

I’m confused. If this is an antenna to boost wifi signal like how some routers have external antennas, nope that’s not the intent and will not work. @@bumbofumbo Not sure about your area, but I don't see any charge, also Fios owns the ONT.
@@bumbofumbo nope free of charge. But it stays with the property when you move
so if i wanted to connect a directional antenna with a coax cable to my Fios g1100, which adapter would I need for the modem side, a TNC male or a SMA male RP, it would help immensely thank you!
I’m confused. If this is an antenna to boost wifi signal like how some routers have external antennas, nope that’s not the intent and will not work. If this is an antenna to pick up over the air TV channels, I believe it will work without issues. You’ll just want to utilize a moca filter right before the coax goes to the TV antenna
@@AMPTechGrade ohhhh I understand, no its not for TV, I wanted to connect my external antenna to my Fios g1100 router, but I thought the routers that have external antenna ports, you could extend the signal with a wifi antenna, btw I really appreciated your response, thank you honestly!
Can I connect my vpn to there router?
If you are trying to connect to your work VPN from your laptop with this router, then yes. If you are trying to get one of those whole home VPN services using this router, it won’t work, not that advanced.
Excellent video...
So I just plug the ethernet cable into the white port the other end plug into my router, and afterwards just setup my router and then I'm good?
No. You unplug the cable from the “white” port on the Verizon router and then plug into YOUR router’s “internet” or “WAN” port and just set it up and you’re good
You have to tell Verizon to activate the ethernet port on the ONT
This seems unnecessarily complicated. You can just run it into the compatible modem router via the main cable
your not annoying but really did not talk using your own router i can all the info you said a store tech what people is how to go in set it up. thank you
That’s the thing, we all have different routers. I can walk thru the setup but it’s different with every store bought router. & they are honestly easy to set up if you follow the instructions for the RUclips video of The router you bought. All I’m doing is explaining the caveats of what to be aware of when installing your one router on the FiOS network. Appreciate the feedback tho
to much yapping
You don’t want it to work? Be my guest. I remade this video 3 times to get to the point. But half the viewers here don’t even know how a router even works
I WANT TO RING PEOPLE'S NECKS who simply say, "Just call Verizon up".
What fantasy world are you people living in? This is 2022; NOBODY ever answers a phone.
Besides that bro, none of this video made sense. I STILL don't know if I can use another router with the Verizon router. Nice try though. I admire anyone who trys.
Call during the day at like 2pm. If it’s beyond your help, that’s what they’re there for. Sorry tho, I tried to cover scenarios like if you have FiOS TV but yea, any router will work as long as there is no built in cable modem
Thanks for the info. Btw, It's illegal now to force customer to pay router/modem rental fees. You should update your description.
That's not accurate. It's illegal for companies to charge you for equipment that you own and want to use.
Thanks for the bs shill
The ONT (in this case modem) is provided free of charge and you can’t get your own. One less thing to worry aboug
All for a $99, fee for a tech to come out
I mean they’re paying for the Ethernet cable, gas, truck miles, union fees, etc by the hour lol. if you know what you’re doing, do it yourself, otherwise your better bet is to pay the fee
Or get the IWMP for $15 a month
If you complain about a $99 fee, you must be absolutely happy if minimum wage was $5 an hour
YOU MAKE NO SENSE -
I jumbled thru a lot of things I’m sorry. I just want to make sure people don’t have issues or hiccups when setting up their own router on Verizon FiOS. What part are you confused with?
@@AMPTechGrade you're fine. I couldn't say for certain what a router was a couple days ago and after some research from various sources, I followed along quite well. Some of these people commenting on your videos expect you to address every little thing without putting any effort of their own into, uh, their OWN problems. Thanks for the video! It helped me prepare for my new router and apartment!
@@AMPTechGradeThere are people on RUclips who comment on how awful any video is and I can't tell if they even watched it. Like that's "their thing". Their hobby. It's what they do. Or maybe they're 9 years old. Can you imagine having someone in your family or a neighbor who was like that? If it's that bad, make your own video and see if anyone likes it.
I like your video but u annoying so I subscribe. No that not true just cause u said it. Continue making tech video with instructions guide by guide
I hear ya. This 1 was hard to make. Not tryna bore people but I wanna be as straightforward as I can. I’ll try better, thank you :)
