I hated "White Boy Carl" but... Military Carl is AMAZING (I liked certain parts of White Boy Carl, like how broken he was after Nick killed that kid, but overall he was kind of awful)

He went from microwaving bunnies and goldfish to selling drugs and then to working to fight for his country. He developed beautifully. They took a great direction with the character, and they did it in the best way possible. His arch is one of the best in shameless, and they made it realistic without just making his life gritty and shitty. He started out as a violent kid who grew up in a home with no money and almost no parental supervision because his parents are the world’s shittiest people and Fiona was just a kid herself that was trying to juggle it all, and they initially took a pessimistic but realistic look at what kind of kid Carl would be. He never had much in the way of brains and his teachers and family never expected much from him because they were trying to take what little resources they had to give kids who may actually do something with their lives a chance, and he initially lived up to those rock bottom expectations. He idolized people who did what they wanted and made up their own rules, even if they hurt people to do it. And he’s GOOD at it. Carl was pretty good at being a thug who would spend his life in and out of jail. He did his job, he made connections with people, he didn’t do anything too stupid. But when Nick killed the kid, the show let it be a terrible, gut wrenching moment and gave it the weight that something so awful deserved, and it was the perfect way to show Carl having this moment of realization where he could suddenly see what the rest of his life would look like and he hated it. It was the perfect moment where something terrible inspires someone to think “this isn’t who I’m going to be”, and I love that he never wavered afterwords and they let him be this new guy. The show lets him feel the weight of his actions and make the choice to be someone who wouldn’t do that to other people, and it’s great.
