I will never forget the moment in time...where I was, what I was doing, when the reality of Martha's situation with C&C hit me like a ton of bricks. I was 20 when Gonna Make You Sweat hit it big, living in a 'cultural wasteland', where information about Martha and her work was hard to come by. Until that moment in early 1991, I had only heard Martha's voice on the radio, but still did not know her name. I was on a hunt to find the siren behind these incredible vocals, not knowing that the answer could be found in Sylvester's music. I was standing in my kitchen cooking dinner when I hear "Everybody Dance Now!" come through the TV. I ran into the living room to find Zelma Davis dancing around, obviously lip-synching, because a voice like Martha's couldn't possibly be coming out of this girl's mouth. I remember very clearly just standing there staring at the TV, trying to wrap my brain around what I was seeing. I soon found out who Martha Wash was when I visited a music store 140 miles away (in civilization), and was once again astounded to realize that Martha's name was nowhere to be found on the credits for that video (until later). I was incensed. How dare they use her voice to achieve mainstream fame, and not have the decency to put her name on the work. Thankfully, she's triumphed and risen above, and has gone on to do her own thing. Today's artists have her to thank for shining a bright light on what was going on behind the scenes.
Respect Martha and ANY artist so much for challenging the vile corporate music factory industry . After she did so , the law was CHANGED as a direct result of her action towards artists rights ✊🏼 RESPECT ♥️♥️♥️
