95% of team sports athletes are role players, and the 5% that are stars have to understand EVERYONE else's role in order to become legendary. Problem is these kids aren't learning how roles work. Everyone thinks they're a star. Everyone wants to show their "bag", instead of learning how to use their bag to impact the team and lift up everyone. 40pts in a loss mentality.

    • @birdnuttzz5700

Agreed. The issue is everyone has been told they’re the man, but there can only be soo many chiefs. Greatness wouldn’t be the same if everyone was great.
We need to get back to telling everyone the truth wholeheartedly. That don’t mean you’re not great

i think he seemed hardheaded to people on the outside cuz the media brought up the bench role, not okc's front office or coaching staff. he was just an all star 6 months ago, didnt have any serious injuries during the year to where you expect a noticeable decline, and was brought in to form a big 3 but your first question as a media guy is "are you coming off the bench?" and people ran with it for years. nobody talks about how he came off the bench in houston even tho danPHONY wouldnt have that conversation with him. it was a mystery every night, is melo starting or coming off the bench?

I know being a role player is tuff for many cause once you reach the nba level everybody was All state and accomplished so much at the high school and college level (unless your pops was Hebron) but the real test is how you gel with the team aspect of the game. If you look at every championship team they have players who have bought into the system and operate there role at the highest level..

I think there is misconception and miscommunication for young players in the NBA. When they first make the league, they typically on the bench and feel they need to average to get more playing time. So once they get on the court and play garbage minutes when their team is getting blown out, they just shoot like there is no tomorrow. I honestly think it takes luck to make it in the NBA. Take Jeremy Lin for example or even a guy like Steve Nash. They both needed an opportunity to shine. 5-10 minutes a game wasn't going to make much difference. They needed to start, consistently. Typically its the 6'7 and up players that get minutes because they aren't such a risk defensively. The guys 6'4 and below have to get lucky. You either have to be extremely talented like Curry to get minutes early in your career, or the right height and size. Even if your last name is James, you be getting sent down to the G-League eventually.

Playing a role doesn’t help you either. Carmelo, D Wade, Kevin Durant all better players than LeBron and league wise we’re given no respect once it was time for them to transition. And now we’re starting to see how much that lack of respect is weighing on a dying league. Because once LeBron, Curry, KD, Harden, all retire which is any season now. That league has no one to carry the torch and why ? Because they’ve based themselves on demanding roles from top players. And filling positions that aren’t valid. Leaving so much talent on the back burner or to be shoved out, unappreciated, or isolated from chance despite possessing the key chops to co-exist.

All are better at certain parts of the game but not better players. One thing that is different is drive and will to win.?Talent and skill can only take you so far. Every player is not built to be superstars, the league can’t help you with that but they provide the platform. The opportunity is there for any player and it’s ignorant to think that the league does not have an interest in creating many Lebron James’s.
