  • Quick and dirty repair on a Lenovo Netbook today. Sometimes you can get away with "making good" when there's no need to fully restore the device to factory condition.
    Notes: Customer was completely fine with this repair, had no use for the HDMI.
    The battery was charging ok, the low charge rate was due to the cable I was using, which was a super cheap USB widget cable I'd cut up.

    Always a good call to give the customer their choice of repair options. Most of the time, for less expensive devices like this they will gladly choose the cheap/quick fix, as it is what they were hoping for when they brought it in. Often, they will even elude to this preference with their language when dropping off. "Can you just see if it's even worth fixing. I don't know, it was just so cheap, I'm not sure I want to spend much on it."
    If they have ANY reservations, they will not hesitate to request a full repair. Though this only seems to happen when the device, A: Holds sentimental value or B: "Feels" irreplaceable to them.

    I feel customers in your area are more understanding and pay attention. If I were to explain it to a customer I would get a call within 2days saying the HDMI port wasn't working and it must have been something I did and I should repair it for free. That's why I make detailed notes on the receipt and make the customer sign it.

    Just had the exact same laptop in my shop with the exact same issue. The moment I opened it the same iductor was cracked aswelas the "TVS" diode, but the audio amplifier was fine. Removed the two broken components and still the problem presisted so removed the audio amp and everything worked again. Must be a defect with these boards. Thanks for the video helped me figure out the issue a lot quicker than I would of on my own, just cant believe I watched your video a few days ago and then the exact same laptop with the exact same issue comes in through my door :D

    HDMI has digital audio coming directly from the GPU. That amp is probably for the headphone jack, since the built-in speakers work.

    • @MartinBarker

      That could be part of the GPU on board this small most of the GPU still will be by the HDMI port.

      @Novgorod funny because every IGPU or on main board GPU I looked like xbox, ps3 ps4 and ps5 all have HDMI via an audio amp chip, so I'm fairly sure your wrong and IGPU does not handle the audio on its own

    • @RealNovgorod
      @RealNovgorod 2 года назад +7

      @@MartinBarker No, you're completely mistaken about how HDMI audio works. HDMI audio data is interleaved with the video data and streamed out via TMDS on 3 differential wire pairs. It's a digital high-bandwidth data stream coming directly from the GPU or SoC. Maybe it can use some kind of phy (like ethernet), but usually that's integrated into the chip outputting the signal. There is no audio amp involved because there is no analog audio whatsoever - the audio is a digital data stream mixed together with the video data.
      I did a bit more digging and the burnt IC is NOT an audio amp at all! The first datasheet google result suggests it's an APA6003 (15W power amp), but it has the wrong chip size (28pin instead of 16) and would be obviously overkill for the tiny laptop speakers let alone headphones (also the speakers were working after removing the chip). That chip is actually an ETA6003 2.5A Li-ion charger (QFN16), which makes sense, since it's close to the AC plug and supposed to drive a status LED (not populated on the board), in addition to the typical circuitry for a DC-DC converter (big caps and coils). The power-on behavior is a bit strange with the chip removed - I assume the SMC waits for the charging to start but it never happens without the chip, so it just powers on the PC after a while. The total power draw of 5W with the PC turned on suggests that there is no charging whatsoever, so this laptop will be doomed to a tether (and a very long startup procedure if it's unplugged) unless the guy changes the charging IC.

    This fault remembers me of something. A hole in the chip? What about this? The most baffling macbook pro fault is that the 50 volt backlight line is right next to the igpu's 1v dataline, so when water gets on the display connector, it sends 50v down to that dataline, in fact literally frying the cpu! Lenovo's also have a great self destruct feature, when the +19v line from the charger touches the charger sense pin, it fries the super-I/O chip, sending 19v to a dataline, sounds familiar doesn't it? I wonder why so many computer manufacturers copy apple, even the bad design choices they copy! Insane!

    Hey just wanted to let you know I repaired the same machine as you, and that the datasheet you looked at is not the correct one. That is for a QFN 4X4-28 pin chip, but the board has a spot for a QFN 3x3-16 Pin. I found the datasheet, it is for the ETA6003. It is a switching charger IC. The only reason I bring it up is because I actually was silly enough to order them from AliExpress and wait a months for it to get here. Love your videos!!

    To be fair, netbooks and other cheap PCs mainly suck because they use those 5400rpm drives or eMMC storage which is basically just a soldered sd card, if only the OEMs spend an extra couple bucks for a proper sata ssd they would actually be ok for basic web use or working on documents.

    Not entirely convinced that's an "audio amp" for several reasons: do HDMI outputs have an audio amp on them ? They don't drive speakers directly, so I doubt it. A6003 could also refer to several other things, like ETA6003 which appears to be a battery charger, which might explain the coil next to it (buck regulator). EDIT: I read the description and you said it's charging fine, so it can't be anything power-related. I was actually really curious to see you dig deeper and see what exactly is not working anymore - probably the headphone jack, meaning it's got a separate amp for the speakers, since those appeared to work.

    • @Adamant_IT
      @Adamant_IT  2 года назад +1

      Yea, this comment and McG's comment below saying HDMI is digital and doesn't need an amp has me questioning this as well. Headphone jack amp definitely seems likely. It looks like an audio circuit to me. Closer look at google doesn't give me any useful info either though🤔

    • @DanielsGameVault
      @DanielsGameVault 2 года назад +1

      A schematic/boardview would be handy if you grabbed the model of the board inside AND was lucky to even find such thing in the first place. Doesn't matter as long as it works, ESP for a budget lappy, but I always like to dig deeper for the fun of it - the "what-if..." route :)

    • @RealNovgorod
      @RealNovgorod 2 года назад +2

      It is indeed an ETA6003 charging IC, not an audio amp. HDMI is digital, so there are no amps involved. The battery is also definitely not charging because the total power draw is only 5W when the laptop is running.

When i inject voltage on the resistors around the chip (3v 2a), the chip gets a bit warm and takes 0.31amps, but the voltage on the psu doesnt go down like in a short.

    Did you notice that part of the broken inductor was shorting out some resistors/capacitors? Obviously it took a hit at some point. It is possible a MLCC in the circuit is also cracked, or just the shard of ferrite was shorting the audio output and therefore blowing the chip.

    I was wondering if I could use a PICO PSU for my Motherboard's miscellanious(24pin connector) components(fans,HDD,north bridge, ram etc) but for my GPU and CPU an external PSU!?
    Is the pico PSU going to interfere with my plan to connect the CPU and GPU from a different PSU (external)!! My external PSU is an HP1200 watt server PSU(which does not have the 24pin connector required to power the motherboard but only has 12v+ground 6pin connectors) and the pico PSU is also going to take its 12v input from this (1200watt server PSU) and convert it to 24pin(3.3v,5v) respectively!!
    I'm quite good when it comes to soldering and wouldn't mind doing some tinkering to get things to work properly ;).
    *_Edit: To make it clear my intensions are to power the GPU and CPU externally and the PICO is only going to power the board through the 24pin connector_*
    *Sorry for the long text.*

    Is it just a camera pointed at the psu and you cut out the 3 displays and put the letters behind it and put that in the video or is it something fancy like a sigrok connection that generates a new view and you import that into your editing program? (or with maybe included software)

      Yup, splice the cable to get the positive and negative, set the DC PS to whatever the input rating of the laptop is. This works for many laptops, but not all, as some have a sense pin that also needs to be configured so the laptop can 'detect' the charger. @@VOLTRONDEFENDER4440 Button shape is small because netbook keyboard is small.
      All computer keyboards have same layout.
      Some keyboards smaller. Some keyboards bigger. Layout is same.
      Enter button always above right-shift button. Button shape is not layout. Button can be different shapes/sizes. Understand??

BUT SYMBOLS/SIGNS/MARKS/STICKERS ON KEYBOARD CAN BE DIFFERENT BECAUSE ALPHABET/LETTERS/SYMBOLS DIFFERENT IN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES. RECTANGLE ENTER KEY IS FOR ALL COUNTRIES. I thumbed up when you said not worth fixing.
    However saving it from landfill does make it worth fixing also it could end up being some unknown genders first computer.

    Couldn't care less, if you could care less then that means you care at least a small amount.

      Good point but this seems to be a paradoxical situation for any of us who even use the expression, 'I don't care at all.' Only when we do not think at all of a situation can we truly be considered as not caring at all, but as soon as we bother to even think of a certain situation we are caring at least a tiny amount. Conclusion: 'caring' is at first a mental awareness. When we care a lot we usually generate a physical action. Thus if we want to care for people for example it must first begin with a mental generation. Also if we intend to harm people it too begins with a mental generation. Ultimate conclusion: guard your mind and generate the desire to help people and you will ultimately increase your physical abilities to actually help people. A strong and healthy mind is dependent on effective mental practices and a weak and sickly mind is dependent on negative mental practices. Everything follows the mind. The 'powers that be' know this very well and use the Media to influence our minds, thus they can control our actions. IF we are awake to this process we can break the spell that Dictators and Mass Corporate Media cast on us. The Mass Media churning out 'fear porn' for the last 20 months coupled with censorship of information opposing the 'fear porn' is a text book example of this.
