  • Sewing an Elastic Casing. Sewing an elastic casing is a method of folding the edge of fabric to create a channel in which elastic can be inserted. It is used to gather up an area on a garment, for example the waistline of a skirt to get a better fit to the body.

You do need to think about your hip measurement as the elastic will constrict to your waist naturally. The elastic should fit around your waist and only pull at it gently. Hope that helps.

Hello TaDarling1. I would recommend stitching into the seam of the elastic casing, that will keep it in place.

Most casing videos I've seen are about casing elastic in a round, like this one. Do you have any suggestions for a "flat casing" to make the casing integrated with the topstitching? (instead of 1. making casing, 2. pulling the elastic through, and 3. stitching down the elastic through the material). Goal is to make the elastic end stitching over the material not so visible and more integrated with the piece as a whole.
    TIA

Your waist measurement plus an overlap of one or one and half inches. Or you can just wrap the elastic around your waist and see how it feels and remember to add an inch or so for the overlap.
