- Sewing an Elastic Casing. Sewing an elastic casing is a method of folding the edge of fabric to create a channel in which elastic can be inserted. It is used to gather up an area on a garment, for example the waistline of a skirt to get a better fit to the body.

You're welcome Amy.
No problem.
Thanks for your videos. They´re very interesting. How do you calculate the long of the elastic?
Thank u so much .......
it is so simple thanx
Thanks for commenting!
You do need to think about your hip measurement as the elastic will constrict to your waist naturally. The elastic should fit around your waist and only pull at it gently. Hope that helps.
really helpful, may God bless you.. :)

You simply measure your waist and cut the elastic accordingly. Read my article at Fashion Sewing Blog where it's explained in better detail.

What type needle needs to be used to sew through the elastic?
When I see through my elastic my machine jams. Not sure if that means it's an issue with the needle?

hi,
how many inches/Cm the allowance fr the waist to add before putting the band? thank u..
What are your suggestions for keeping the elastic from shifting around in the casing over time or after laundering?
Hello TaDarling1. I would recommend stitching into the seam of the elastic casing, that will keep it in place.
Hello! What width size elastic did you use on your skirt?
Great! What do you suggest for jerseys?
***** Try checking out ruclips.net/video/kJSqTcH_Nb4/видео.html as this should assist.
Most casing videos I've seen are about casing elastic in a round, like this one. Do you have any suggestions for a "flat casing" to make the casing integrated with the topstitching? (instead of 1. making casing, 2. pulling the elastic through, and 3. stitching down the elastic through the material). Goal is to make the elastic end stitching over the material not so visible and more integrated with the piece as a whole.
TIA
Hello Anita. This video may help with your problem ruclips.net/video/kJSqTcH_Nb4/видео.html.
From memory, I think it was around an inch or so.
The ironing is so hard to do small folds on stretch cotton fabric. Do you have a recommendation for that?
Perhaps just use a steamer!
Hello, I am having a problem with my waist band. I made a circle skirt for a little girl with a slip, but I think is the skirt is too heavy. How can I change my elastic waist band to a zipper and eye hook so the skirt doesn't fall off. Thank you, Iris.
You can't really stop the elastic from becoming mis-shaped over time. Its simple wear and tear.
Use your hip measurement.
What is the elastic measurement vs. the funnel circumference?
Less than 10 cms depending on the stretch of the elastic.
Hi im trying to understand the first part where you folded it small? Could you help me im trying to make things for my nonprofit and need a little help
The first small fold is to hide the raw edge, to give a clean and professional look to the casing, I hope that helps.
Is your garment wider then your elastic or the other way around?
Garment is wider.
My elastic folds over as I’m wearing it. Any suggestions?
It is a good idea to sew a vertical line of stitching, into the seam of the casing. I hope that helps Marilyn.
My elastic tends to twist in the tunnel over time..is that preventable?
Hello Els, try stitching down the elastic from the top of the casing to the bottom in the seam line, that should help.
I've sewn my casing but the elastic isn't gathering right with the fabric. I have a stretch that is flat and not gathered. No matter how much I pull on the fabric to even out the gathering there is still a flat section can anyone help?
Hello Yvette, It seems like your casing is to small in certain areas, the elastic needs a little more space for it to move.
safety pin at end of elastic...
jey
mam how much elastic we should take for a skirt
Your waist measurement plus an overlap of one or one and half inches. Or you can just wrap the elastic around your waist and see how it feels and remember to add an inch or so for the overlap.
way easier to pin the end of elastic and run it thru the already sewn casing
That's another method that works thanks for sharing River None.
FashionSewingBlogTV I have been sewing all my life. This is the only way I know or care to know thanks! Be well. River
