  • In this episode, I’m speaking with my friend and veteran homeschool mom, Miss Phyllis Asanyanbi. Miss Phyllis has an incredible testimony of how she remained committed to homeschooling despite the incredible odds she faced as a single parent to her son who has unique learning and emotional needs as a twice exceptional child There are many who believe that only people in a certain income bracket and a certain marital status can effectively homeschool, however Miss Phyllis’ experience is a testament to the old adage, where there’s a will, there’s a way.
If you’re considering homeschooling, I hope that Miss Phyllis’ story gives you hope that if the public school is not meeting your child’s needs that you can make a change for the better. Homeschooling is all about taking what you have and making the most of it. Homeschooling is not without sacrifice. At times, there may be doubts and fears. At times, there may be lack, but overcoming difficulty and challenges brings growth and wisdom. On the other side of the obstacles is healing and joy. Is homeschooling worth it? Most definitely, because our children are worth it. Seeing them thriving, growing, and joyful is worth it!

I'm in the NC mountains. No support for blacks readily available. Daughter starting 7th and not looking forward to it.

I would recommend connecting virtually with some other black homeschoolers online. There are some virtual African-American homeschool co-ops online that meet virtually. There are some that help teens to connect virtually as well. Additionally, I would recommend looking up some classes on Outschool that will enable your daughter to connect as well. I will share some links to the groups I mentioned.
