Another fact, a real hedgehog isn't as fast as Sonic but is pretty fast for our real world. Common hedgehogs can run in short bursts of speeds of about 4 mph.
Fun Fact 12: Contrary to popular belief, chili dogs are a no-no food for them right now. It's BETTER to give them unseasoned meats with no bread, and you can PRETEND they're eating a chili dog.

Maybe it's a good thing to mention, that the African Pygme Hedgehog isn't meant to hybernate... If they do, they'll die ... Hybernation isn't a part of their nature...
I was just about to comment this same fact. If our awesome domesticated hedgies do try to hibernate (having a cold belly is 1 sure sign that they're trying), you need to VERY gradually warm them with your own body heat; don't rush it with a heating pad, bathing, etc, or then they go into shock. Still a g reat vid, other than that little bit😊

We had 2 dogs but they knew when the pointy bulldozer was coming thru to move aside. Oh, pro tip.....make sure your hands don't smell like food/snacks heh...... they'll 'test' it with a good nip, and they naturally don't like letting go.
I too had a female African Pigmy hedgehog named Shadoe (female for Shadow. Don’t judge me! 😅😂 I loved Shadow the hedgehog back in high school). It’s happened to me before where I once smelled of food and she nipped me! 😂 my ex boyfriend once let her eat some of his chocolate and she liked it! 😂 I had her from 2005 to 2010. She was much loved by kids everywhere and would ask to see her when I lived in Mexico. 🙂☺️ she was my first actual pet I ever bought.
@@tell-me-a-story- Well, it might be, but they’re diurnal/nocturnal. They can be up at different times of the day or night, depending on your schedule. They might wake up your child(ren) if the hedgie is up at night. I for one, was use to my hedgie when I had her after high school. She was a favorite of mine and loved by so many people. 🙂☺️ They do require a wheel (or large ferret ball. Make sure to clean it) to run on, insects to snack on, good grade cat food or hedgehog food, water, a litter box (if you’re planning to litter train them. And yes, they can be litter trained. I’ve had 3 litter trained hedgies in the past) and a big cage (1 X 2 or larger with no big holes in which they’re feet will get caught in). It’s also best not to use rubber or leather gloves. They need to get use to your scent.
Ah... African Pygmy Hedgehogs actually don't naturally hibernate as in the wild as they wouldn't be exposed to extreme cold. If one of these guys were to go into hibernation they would most certainly die. My little hedgie went into hibernation once but I was able to get her out of it without any issues. The sign of them going into hibernation is being lethargic/unmoving, unresponsive, curled up tight and cool to the touch. You don't ever want to use water to wake them up! The best thing to do is skin on skin warmth; shove them under your shirt so they rest on your belly and put a blanket or towel over top to really trap the heat in. If you can't do this then a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel is the next best thing (never put it directly against your hedgehog), and you need to be careful so that it doesn't hurt them. It's so important to keep their environment warm enough for them as occurrences such as these can pose a serious risk to your precious hoglet.
I have a African Pygmy Hedgehog too. When I got him I made sure I bought a couple of large plastic heating mats, these are covered by litter that allows them to stay dry. If I am worried about him becoming cold, even with the mats on I use a black heat light on a thermostat. He is rather spoiled.

I wouldn't call 5 out of 50 many. They can be owned with a special permit in 2. In 44 States including the State of New York (not NYC) you can own a hedgehog if you want, regular pet permit. 10% doesn't count as many. 10% is few. Doesn't sound as good, but it's accurate.
had a pair of sisters back when i was still a kid. my parents had a little trouble at night when they'd break out of their cage and climb into their bed. the parent sleeping on the side the girls climbed up would start to roll over and then feel a spike ball at their back. the girls were great for finding scorpions and cockroaches in the house and taking care of them.
Fun fact: Echidna’s and hedgehogs are only related in appearance, other than that they have nothing to do with each other within their bloodline/family tree, so no, sonic and knuckles are not even close to being related, and barely are in appearance.

I have a Hedgehog but Hedgehogs quills have bacteria and if you get pricked you your stomach may start hurting and you get sick-ish and Hedgehogs can hide their illnesses if they have one
Not true. Hedgehogs can show signs of illness. Mainly Wobbly hedgehog syndrome. And if you get sick after getting prickled by a hedgehog, chances are you did not wash your hands after handling it. The anointing that hedgehogs do is a defense mechanism they use to drive away predators as their spit on their spikes can cause irritation to the skin. It's important to wear gloves and wash your hands before and after handling hedgies.
If your hedgie makes you sick, then you're not bathing your hedgie (with soapy water) anywhere near enough, or maybe it's your immune system. You should at least give him/her a footbath before handing as this will do 2 things: clean off feces from its feet as well as make him/her go to the bathroom so it doesn't pee or poop on you while handling. I've never felt sick after playing with any of my hedgies. I always give them a footbath before playing or just snuggling up in their fleecy travel pouch/snuggly (even if full-bath day was that same day). As for the other comment about wearing gloves...I don't believe (along with many reputable breeders) that's wise, esp when bonding with 1 of the "grumpiest" small pets around.. lol. They need to smell your scent, esp when you're removing them from their safe zone (their cage/home). With bare-handed practice, patience & complete confidence in yourself (slightly similar to horses, they sense trepidation), they will come to associate you with saftey & not spike up... unless startled whilst holding them.. lol!
My mom and I naively let our first hedgehog, Cassandra, wander our garden unsupervised (for like five seconds). She immediately found a dog poop, ate it, and started anointing herself with it. In ten seconds she was a brown stinky mess. We bathed her thrice before the smell went away
This video was so insightful. We are “hedgehog sitting” my daughter’s class pet this extended weekend and this little video helped answer some of our questions (the anointing thing - so odd) and helped us understand more about our little house guest.
I miss my babies. I kept them for years, but the only store that carries them jacked the price up to $300! The $100 or $150 a hog days are gone, unless you buy a retired breeder. 🦔🦔🦔🐾
Just a heads up @1:56, I believe that's a millipede vs. a centipede. Also, porcupine quills aren't poisonous, if anything, they carry bacteria that could cause infections and should always be seen by a doctor, but there is no poison or venom to the quills.
The most common sound a hedgehog makes is: “you’re too slow!” Or “talk about low budget flights, no food or movies I’m outta here I like running better” hedgehogs are robot destroying animals that run at the speed of sound and come in almost any color most known are blue, black, silver and pink. Some hedgehogs are edgy and have guns. Others have psychic abilities and others hold big hammers. The more you know
That's not quite true about their quills they do drop some from time to time and you will know it if you happen to accidentally discover one while you barefoot or in socks.
This is more about wild hedgehogs than like pet hedgehogs but you should never let your pet hedgehog go into hibernation because they just won't survive it
Some species will and some don't, depending on the species and body fat. For example african pygmy hedgehogs don't hibernate in nature and won't make it.

We have that place where we storage milk etc and there was dogfoods too. one hedgehog learned to open that one door that was easy to open and he/she got to taste of dogfood :D It was really funny to try get that hog to outside, it was hissing and let out sounds that it was really angry and we just push it with broom but it was almost impossible to get it out because it has so much willpower to stay inside :D it didnt fear us at all
I have a pet hedgehog, and the facts for african pygmy hedgehogs are pretty solid. Can I recommend a video on the difference between hedgehogs and tenrecs?
@@zorbathegreek8339 Where did you hear that? 😂 While they can get fleas, proper care should make that very unlikely. I'd personally say that they're lower maintenance then dogs. They're just a little different 🤗
Love Lesser Tenrecs!💙 So small, adorable wee faces & great little arboreal climbers! Unlike my ground-dwelling clumsy hedgies (yet still equally adorable).. lol!🥰 And the diff is that they're not even related... like at all!!!
From my observations, I think annoiting is to cover scent. My hedgehog tended to do it more when I took him out of his cage and he would get carpet fibers in his mouth before making the froth. So it was like he was taking something from the new environment to make himself smell like it.
I absolutely love this video and the facts, but when you were talking about centipede, you showed a picture of a millipede. Just gave me a nice, friendly little laugh
Actually there are 2 more! [CLASSIFIED BY GUARDIAN UNIT OF NATIONS] The second species is white and has special power that allows them to float and pick up items without grabbing them
I still can’t believe California forbids pet hedgehogs! They’re super cute!! Oh, what am I saying?! They don’t know what cute is if it hit them in the head.
Could self-anointing be a way for hedgehogs to see if, whatever that new substance is, whether or not it might be allergic to it? Testing it out upon its skin before ingesting the new food?
They are cuter than cats. I've never seen one because we don't have them in Australia. We have the superficially similar echidna, which is also very cute, but I've only seen them in a zoo.
Fun fact: Did you know that hedgehogs are objectively in the top three cutest creatures on earth?

@@zorbathegreek8339 Where did you hear that? 😂 While they can get fleas, proper care should make that very unlikely. I'd personally say that they're lower maintenance then dogs. They're just a little different 🤗

Where the fuck do you think they'd get fleas if they live inside?
Love Lesser Tenrecs!💙 So small, adorable wee faces & great little arboreal climbers! Unlike my ground-dwelling clumsy hedgies (yet still equally adorable).. lol!🥰
And the diff is that they're not even related... like at all!!!
love hedgehogs
Wow! No wonder why hedgehog is so fat, and sleepy!!!!! Thank you so much! 😊

From my observations, I think annoiting is to cover scent. My hedgehog tended to do it more when I took him out of his cage and he would get carpet fibers in his mouth before making the froth. So it was like he was taking something from the new environment to make himself smell like it.
Interesting mine does it to the tahs on my pillows
Cute animals. Once met one at close distance, said Hallo and let him alone...
One sa po prostu prze prze prze przecudowne.....😊

I absolutely love this video and the facts, but when you were talking about centipede, you showed a picture of a millipede. Just gave me a nice, friendly little laugh
Thank you. It will help me a lot for taking care of my hedgehog ❤❤❤ God bless🙏🏻
There's actually a 18th species. They come in blue colours and run fast. Usually rolling down slopes in a ball form.
Actually there are 2 more! [CLASSIFIED BY GUARDIAN UNIT OF NATIONS] The second species is white and has special power that allows them to float and pick up items without grabbing them
@@Enitssg7800 don't forget the pink one
how about the edgy black hedgehog? My favorite 😍

Could self-anointing be a way for hedgehogs to see if, whatever that new substance is, whether or not it might be allergic to it? Testing it out upon its skin before ingesting the new food?
God their adorable. ❤😍
I like the because they are like me: Eating the whole day in the christmas time :)

Cool hedgehog

Interesting and informative, thanks for the upload :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful little creatures.
Thanks for this smashing
They are cuter than cats. I've never seen one because we don't have them in Australia. We have the superficially similar echidna, which is also very cute, but I've only seen them in a zoo.
