    For several years living at the edge of a town in a house bordering the countryside I had the luck to observe the life of these wonderful creatures. Being so cute and "exotic" I took a liking of them and educated myself on their behaviors and needs. Like many I took the habit of leaving water and food for them and I arranged some shelters to facilitate their overwinter, being content to help them and observe from a distance. I took notice that at the end of the Fall there were many juveniles still roaming around but, by their dimension and appearance, I concluded that they were not big and fat enough to hibernate successfully and reach the Spring alive. I read that they have to be at least half a Kilogram to sleep through the Winter and not die of hunger while hibernating or wake up in the middle of the Winter and exit their shelter only to die outside for the cold or the absence of insects or other means of sustenance. After consulting the "hedgehog literature" and various animal conservation associations, with some trepidation I took the dive and began taking inside some "kids" and caring for them until Spring to be released in the wild at the first viable occasion. They are quite a commitment. Almost everyone had a big parasite load: Ticks, fleas, mites, myiasis (fly worms on wounds or mucosa, very nasty stuff) on the outside; coccidia, toxoplasma and other bugs inside. So expect some vet expense and commit to take good care of them if you want to release them in tip top shape. They are noisy. Being nocturnal even if you host them in some far room expect some ruckus at night (if you want shoot yourself in the foot provide them with a hamster wheel. In the wild they walk as far as 5 km. a night). They produce A LOT of feces. It's unbelievable the sheer quantity they can produce from a so tiny body. When you find their "gifts" for the first time you will think for sure that some big cat or little dog has sneaked inside and left a present...So store a lot of cardboard boxes or Ikea plastic containers and old newspapers, you will need them. Cat litter or other substrates are not advisable from my experience. In the beginning they are very shy and even after months don't expect any attachment or confidence by their side. Furthermore I discourage any contact except for feeding and cleaning: They are wild animals not pets, so satisfy yourself with the thought you gave them a big help and do not expect anything else in return. Mark them with a drop of nail varnish on the back and with some luck you will see them again alone or with their new families huffing and puffing in your garden night escapades. They are fantastic animals 🦔

      We're fortunate in being in a quiet, rural area and have several hedgehog highways, ramps and little nesting boxes for them but sadly we're seeing less live and more as roadkill 😞 One of my dogs is obsessed with them and it's amazing how quickly he detects a hedgehog somewhere (can be within a fair distance too but he'll smell it and go weaving and tracking it) then find it and just stand stock still looking at it like a nightclub bouncer. Doesn't bother, worry or stress them out they just ball up, he just stands there and I call him back and then wait to watch his little legs go tootling off again. 😅

    • @banmadabon
      @banmadabon Год назад +1

      @@charlottewebster4233 I read somewhere (very strange indeed) to avoid using an electric torch when you go feeding them. It seems like they associate the lights with food and they go towards the roads attracted by the car lights. Imho is a wacky theory. A more science based info is to avoid the blue prills of poison that people put in their vegetable gardens to kill the snails. Hedgies like snails a lot and they die from eating the poisoned snails

    • @charlottewebster4233
      @charlottewebster4233 Год назад +3

      @@banmadabon No sadly the increase in roadkill around here at least is from new build developments and their loss of habitat. We've seen so many new homes go up in the last few years they've been pushed out of the open fields and countryside and have to venture nearer roads to get from one place to another. There are hedgehog highways, holes in fences and people have become more aware leaving them an alternative way of getting places without risking getting squished but it's a shame. What I will say though is the wild hogs are getting so fat from being overfed 😮 It's good people are looking out for them and want to make sure they're OK and leaving food but think they're doing it religiously and we just have these massive fat hogs almost the size of a football 🍔

    Really loved most all of the film and actually appreciated just seeing the hedgehogs as they are - making their little snuffles and huffing noises without a human describing it. Really loved the film overall, but damn, that ending was quite a smashing the face with a hammer. While it might be true, it seemed a jarring way to end the film. Maybe even just a few extra seconds at the end with the car stopping and asking people to drive carefully and watch out for our little hogs?

    Finally found some that make the coffee dripping noise! i had one come in making that noise a lot in the beginning and then he piped down so I thought it must be voluntary but I didn't know what it meant. Maybe it's to warn away rivals as they made it during a fight in this video. Otherwise I mainly hear huffing and chewing as they like to eat the cat kibble. I'll set out some apple too tonight, I doubt they get that often around here.
    My town's hedgehogs seem very fearless as they like to come inside and in my current house they also sleep indoors. I have one asleep in my bedroom right now, my cats accept all this as just part of life. I hope they do not give birth inside my house though, they should still stay wild and learn how to be real wild hedgehogs and avoid people who are not me. They are very cute and well they encourage you to feed them so mine will not be starving in summer when it gets dry as they all seem to know where the neverending foodhouse is.
