In this clip, Del the Funky Homosapien discussed the early stages of his career from being signed to Elektra to getting his entire crew signed. He spoke on the drastic sonic difference between his first and second albums while also breaking down how he created the Hieroglyphics logo. Speaking of which, Del revealed that the decision to name the crew The Hieroglyphics came from a friend of his from London who was debating on using the name for a crew of his own.
Del went on to talk about the content of his music as opposed to that of the rest of California in the 1990s. He and others, like The Pharcyde for instance, were more about lyricism and avoided "gangsta" or street oriented subjects. To Del, who was into Malcolm X and black empowerment at the time saw that type of content as detrimental despite the realities it came from.
Del, Souls of Mischief, Hieroglyphics, The Coup, The Concious Daughterz, and Paris was the lyrical shit coming out the bay back then!! Much respect

Pep Love is incredible. I don't know how he didn't get more attention. All Heiro was kinda underappreciated.
i grew to like casual and pep over del and souls.
They have the biggest and strongest cult followings in underground, top tier Hip Hop. They're definitely not underappreciated at all. Real Hip Hop heads know what's up.
@@chipdouglas9448 No shit. And I'm saying they should be even more appreciated. Real hip hop heads will get what I'm saying.
Pep Love is my favorite, from all I’ve heard from the whole crew
I can honestly say Del was leaving the stage, done with his show, and saw me with my skateboard (I painted a hieroglyphics symbol on it), and he actually stopped and signed my skateboard. That was pretty damn cool considering the fact that I wasn't asking him to or anything I was actually hoping to catch him outside. I'll never forget that and I thought that was pretty cool of him
Del is for the people, what a great guy
Seeing Deltron live for free in Brooklyn, backed by a full symphony orchestra, was one of my favorite concert experiences of all time.
You lucky bastard

3rd Eye Vision is an amazing album!! My opinion the best Hieroglyphics album! Such a classic!
If you ain't heard it yet, it's a must!!!!
Agreed
I love 3rd Eye Vision but....Full Circle is my favorite...both definitely classics tho
Full circle for me. Great album tho
Preach. Its imo one of the 5 greatest hip-hop albums EVER. And that should be undisputed. The length along with substance is unmatched.
One of the most Underrated M.C.'s
Gerrine Hill not really underrated....
Gerrine Hill bc Delton 3030 is top 10 hip hop albums of all time. Along with the heiro stuff. But i feel what you're saying. He is just not as well known, I wouldn't say underrated though, there is a difference.
Gerrine Hill real heads know who he is tho
Del is my fav rapper personally. Both sides of the brain and Deltron 3030 are fucking alien in nature. Did you know that Eminem and Andre 3000 used literally call eachother up on the phone to nerd out over his group Hieroglphics lyrics. Talking at length about how blown away lyrically and sonically the music form them was. DEL is literally one of the 5-10 greatest ever by anyone with a brain. My top-5 might be guys like Big Daddy Kane, Eminem, DEL The Funkee Homosapien, Tupac, and Nas....
Hieroglyphics - 3rd Eye Vision is maybe the best rap album period.
Delton 3030 is waay ahead of its time

1030 years to be exact
I was listening to it today otw to the crib and that album is still flawless
93 til' Infinity one of the (Great18)'s many anthems.
also I can't believe that Souls of Mischief album didn't even go gold...salute Del..
Important I copped it when I was 12
may i ask where you lived and how you knew about hieros at age 12?
im a few years older and i viewed them as underground, and not easily findable by a 12 year old
Yet!!
@@littleoldal Well, I played that tape until it broke & I copped it at around 12 or 13 years old... I was in Indianapolis Indiana.

fuckin legendary interview. Discovered dude through the Gorillaz, he is definitely one of the first artists to make me dive into the underground...9-10 years later and I ain't looked back.
Great introduction however Del goes back to the late eighties, early nineties..wrote songs for Ice Cube as well.
Del's 2nd album, "No Need For Alarm" is a fuckin classic!
August Knight Always thought his first album was better..
NNFA is clean as fuck
Both Sides Of The Brain did it for me. That album was a lyrical masterpiece from start to finish
@@gerrinehill6992 Future Developement, & No Need For Alarm are his best albums and Both Of The Brain is also dope.
@@wandererkenshin7557 you must be a youngster Mr Dobalina?😂
Ha! I remember Del from Skyline High. He was hella low key and always wearing headphones and listening to his Walkman.
Don't forget his skateboard never seen him without it🤘🏽
Yall some cool, lucky people to know this man or to see him personally. Guys a straight legend
93 til infinity is still one of my favorite HipHop songs, period. The video was totally left field, shot off in the mountains of Northern Cali. Heiro Imperium. After seeing the logo inside of Del's first Record, I was surprised when I started seeing it in skate shops, & on skate decks.
Dels voice makes my headphones buzz...😂
his voice is so deep lol
Nigga got that baritone Bass n shit Lol 😂😂😂.
Just listening to Del's interview and his lazy speech you wouldn't be able to tell he's capable of spitting some of the best flows in the game. Guess he's just saving all his energy for when he needs it.
i honestly think hes just not exactly a talkative person lol Interviews aren't really his thing.
I think he's a creative introvert who comes alive when doing his passion and checks out on things he's not interested in
Naw, vlads just a bitch and anybody from the town from that era ain't gonna just front and act like they like a straight up wiggly finger clown like Vlad.
Del .,.. at the helm. / Wack MC's Classic jams... Still 💕 them Hiero Oldies tapes. There's something about the Hiero production, especially the drums were filthy, filtered sounded hella raw lol ...Both sides of the brain / 3030 albums are my favs...
Future Development was one of the best bay albums of all time
Mine as well.
Bout sides of the brain for me
That's my favourite Del album can't believe Elektra never released it at that time.
This dude has the coolest voice ever. He should have his own radio show.
Wu Tang symbol is to east coast hip hop, as the Hieroglyphics symbols is to West coast hip hop.
I can't recall if The Living Legends have a symbol.
id say no limit tank or cash money logo
those assclowns are from louisiana tho.
Stop disrespecting the Wu, Jesus Christ. You people need to get the fuck out
I still have my Hiero Logo slip mats for my turn tables, those mats are sacred to me.
I STILL pump No Need For Alarm to this day. That album is hip hop to the core!
Hieroglyphics is the west coast Wu-Tang
Julezz Zz Wu Tang is the east coast Hiero lol
Bad comparison...more like west coast Native Tongues.

Del the funky HOMOSAPIEN is chillin
never thought I'd say this but Del is TOO humble. lol
Read his body language, he doesn’t want to be there or he thinks vlads line of questioning is lame
While I appreciate an interview with Del, Vlad is the epitome of lame. He failed to do homework with this guest particularly but no matter what he is documenting he inserts his dose of cringe. That said, he got del opening up - so thats cool.
@@dublplus3332 I've followed Del for over 20 years and it just seems like this episode is just another one Vlad "had to do". I've seen him with other rappers and he is does a good job when he wants.
Nah that's burnout, he needs weed n caffeine to overcome gravity.
When Del came out on 'Clint Eastwood' with Gorillaz, that's when I fell in love with hip-hop. Growing up in LA all you here is gangsta rap, that verse though blew my mind.
Jeff Madrigal that verse is amazing
kuroashi Sanji I seen the pharcyde many times live. Last time i was kicking it with bootie brown. You got me confused bro, i know hip hop.

Definitely. Vlad should have asked Del about them and their fallout. He's too busy worried about Cube.
I got the yellow Heiro shoes with Del's famous logo. Love em!
Deltron baby
I was 14 or 15 when no need for alarm came out. I had the add from like the source in my trapper keeper, I’m well into my 40s and Del Changed my perspective on influence of hip hop forever. Loved Deltron, Love Del, big part of my musical life for sure!
Del is my fav rapper personally. Both sides of the brain and Deltron 3030 are fucking alien in nature. Wow never knew he was really down with MF Doom and KMD
Matt October it makes alot of sense wit doom
DOOM and del were on the same label in the early 90s
Me neither that's cool man
Nerds stick together.
dude knew everyone in the early 90s in the rap scene. Theres a funny story of him and Q Tip from Tribe tripping on shrooms.
I love how unironically he just said that hieroglyphics was not written on paper.
I know this is the case for many fans out there, but I found out about Del’s music through skateboarding videos/culture, along with most of the Golden Era Hip-Hop I loved and grew up with. A song from his first album was in the first Plan B video “Questionable” and then when No Need for Alarm came out, I think I “borrowed” it from my older sister and kept it or had my own used copy (I forget). Although I went back and got I Wish My Brother George Was Here, the second album was by far my favorite. I remember getting so excited when the video for “Catch a Bad One” was played on Yo! MTV Raps; me and my friends were stoked.
It would be interesting to know what Del’s thoughts are on the overlap with his fans and skateboarding. Does he think it’s cool or corny?
Another thing I’d wanna hear about is how he got hooked up with Dinosaur Jr. for the Judgement Night soundtrack. Their track “Missing Link” is one of only two songs I liked on that goofy ass thing. I’m sure it was a pairing he had nothing to do with, but again, both artists were popular with skaters.
No mention of Extra Prolific???? “Like It Should Be” is a CLASSIC Hiero album

Souls may have been the biggest, but del had 100 times the respect in the bay area. Big ups
Del still cool as shit
He said the key shit: “Now that I’ve lived a little bit.”
I think some of the more “Lyrical” West Coast rappers didn’t factor in the West Coast lifestyle as a reason for what was perceived as poison.
And when I say lifestyle, I mean all of the underpinnings of controlling the most populated state in America.
