5 Mistakes That Will MESS UP Your Relationship With Your Bird

  • This is Patty's second training session with Morgan ever - so be gentle and mindful of her struggle when commenting.
Sometimes things are not as easy as they look.
The 5 major mistakes made in this video:
    1. Encouragement placed at the wrong moment.
    2. Use of language being the same and otherwise confusing.
    3. Accidental bridging (bridging is marking the exact moment in time with either a clicker or the words "good girl" that the bird did the behavior you want to see repeated.)
    4. Not properly catching Morgan, resulting in her becoming easily off balance as well as each catch being so different that there's no consistency.
    5. Not properly reading body language and otherwise a lack of communicating and adjusting to the bird.

I am in love with your teaching skills! For both birds and humans, haha. You're firm but compassionate and patient. The world needs more teachers like you.
I just stumbled upon this channel because I love animals. And while I never plan on having birds (especially parrots), I'm so fascinated by your relationships with them, and how intuitively you seem to understand behavior. This channel is a gem.

Having learned a lot on how to work with dogs (the principles are the same!), I can totally relate to Patty in this. Not only is it hard to break these habits, it's difficult to realize that you're even doing them as they happen! This is why video recordings can be such a useful training tool!

I adopted Ara, my 15 year old rescue scarlet macaw a few days ago and she does not have the confidence to fly. She does the wing thing all the time but will not fly no matter what I do. She is also not good at stepping up. Ara will step-up with on foot but then put it back down after a few seconds. This video helped a lot, I would love to learn as much as I can about training macaws! I want to have her free-flight trained in the future once she is stepping-up confidently and can fly.

A great example of the animal training the human. When the bird is not ready. It can be tired or just not focused. But it can also be because it knows the person isn't ready. The more I watch the videos the more I am convinced the bird to person connection is even greater than with a dog or cat.

Jamie has less patience with people than with the bird here haha. I think she has less patience with people because birds are a different species and communicate differently so Jamie gives them a pass for misunderstanding sometimes and keeps working through it. But since other people speak English the same as her, Jamie probably feels that THEORETICALLY they should always comprehend what she means and she gets a little more flustered when that is not the case. Morgan, Patty, and Jamie are all working hard here to communicate with each other and that is something everyone must work on for a life time no matter what language they speak.

First of all, thanks so much for sharing this. I am always excited to see how the two of you are doing on your progress with Morgan, although I don't have birds anymore .
You probably are aware of it, but it seems Patty was kind of overburdened in this session, mainly because there are so many things to mind. In my experience, it is most efficient and convenient to focus and work on one aspect at a time, until it's absorbed (I am a musician and teacher). I understand there is an urge to correct flaws quickly because they have an impact on Morgan. But you might review some of your footage for body language and proper response, or (if it's possible) do some sessions with Jamieleigh's parrots - you will probably come up with something. It also might help Patty to get an INSTANT, SHORT reminder, when she falls back into her habit like "hand!" or "gg-word". Best wishes!!!

So, I have to say that these videos are awesome! I have never worked with these types of birds, I am actually training a Common Raven right now in Utah, but these videos are teaching me a lot about how to teach others too. One point you said in a previous video, Jamie, "there is just no time for a lot of words." You couldn't be more right because you can't risk losing the moment!! So I'd love to see more series like these, it is great to see unrehearsed how real people teach and be taught.
And Patty, don't give up!! You kick ass for doing this, both of you!!

Your final comment of the video. That you get bummed when things dont happen like you wanted. It can be disheartening HOWEVER as was mentioned also its USUALLY the animal trying to let you know your communication to them isn't clear enough sooo it's also the OPPORTUNITY to become a better trainer 😁 I most definitely credit my toughest trainees for making me the trainer I am today. They are the ones who forced me to think things through and figure out where I was making mistakes and not communicating clearly or reading them correctly. Because after all we are the ones asking them to do something, not the other way around. Great job Patty not giving up!! Rescue is proof so many others have! You'll get there!

I’ve been following this series closely and have a question: is it typically for birds to learn this quickly? Morgan’s progress seems very rapid, and I’m wondering how common this is.

    • @BirdTricks
      @BirdTricks  6 лет назад +19

If the person knows what they're doing, yes. Often times people will accidentally click the clicker at the wrong time and capture a behavior they then have to un-do. I have some series like this one with an alexandrine parakeet, and blue fronted amazon as well. The amazon was trained in 45 days! I had the parakeet for the entire summer. Each bird and person is different so the learning rate will be different based on that. But I do think Morgan learns quickly and is very open to training. I don't think she's ever been communicated so clearly with before so she is really enjoying it.

Something I noticed while training my dog…
I was trying to teach her “doggy catch” where she’ll jump into my arms on command. To get her there I started with sitting in a chair and having her jump her into my lap. As she was more successful the higher off the chair I would sit until I was standing completely straight up.
The problem was… when she was in my lap, great good job! …and then I would have to remove her from my lap to continue practicing the command. But she started to think that no, I don’t actually want you on my lap, because I had to keep placing her back on the floor.
I wonder if this can be an issue with recall in birds too. The bird came to you, but then you immediately put it back on the perch… so maybe you don’t actually want me to come to you? I guess this is Another reason to not rush and be very patient and use high value treats at the beginning so there’s no confusion.

I was taught with dog training if they do it correctly 3 times in a row, move on to something different. You accomplish what you set out to do. You can come back to it later. You want to help the animal to learn ( and they will think wow I am awesome.

    • @BirdTricks
      @BirdTricks  5 лет назад +7

Dog training doesn't translate to parrot training... you can also train a dog a lot longer, and dogs will often do things to please you. Birds need short sessions and are self serving animals. Also, I am working on conditioning with Morgan to get her in good enough shape to be able to handle long exploratory flights outdoors so a few reps isn't going to accomplish my end goal.

This isn't any different than training the owner with a more common animal, such as a dog, where owners do terrible training mistakes.
Also, if patti would use a normal speaking voice, instead of the high pitched, and somewhat anxious sounding "baby talk" voice, the bird AND patti would probably be more calm. Patti is more nervous about being accepted by the bird and about doing the training correctly than the bird is about flying and being caught.
The other problem here is that jamie is having to train multiple issues out of patti. As intelligent as we are, even as humans, our brains only like to learn 1 correction at a time.
It's really impressive to see the trainer do as much as she can to NOT hold the bird's attention. It's human nature to want the attention.
I know this was filmed months ago, but patti and any new bird owner could learn a lot from watching how the trainer interacts with the bird, body language, body positioning, etc.
I know people are giving patti grief, but I've seen plenty of dog owners do the same kinds of errors with command words, mistimed rewards, "good boy" all the time leading to dogs who won't sit or stay, etc.
Lots of dog training is training the owner and that's what's going on here. But, nobody gets hate from learning to train their dog like people in bird vid comments seem to do.

14:35 Idk why but to me she came off really rude and mean. I understand if she did it 7 or 8 times, but that was her first time doing that.

I am really frustrated by this. I hate to say it. Patty just isn't enough in tune with bird body language atm

I feel like that you make Patty look like a bad owner... I bet Patty doesn't make mistakes all the time but your videos let me think that Morgan should not be the pet of Patty because of all those mistakes she makes, or at least, all the mistakes you choose to show us.

Patty is not a bad owner, but NO ONE has been able to be a good one to THIS bird yet. That's what this training is all about - and that's what my videos are about - showing the failures AND successes. If you want to only see people succeeding, check out another channel. That's not how I believe people or animals learn, we learn through our mistakes. And although it gets better (as you will see in future videos) it gets worse before it does get better. This is new for everyone. And nothing against Patty, or any other parrot owner out there, she is not a trainer so this is all new for her. She's allowing the world to witness her learning process. But yeah, the second day of training was pretty awful. There was not a lot of good to show, unfortunately. But she learns from all of this and greatly improves over the next couple of days. I just don't have every video edited and uploaded. It's a big emotional struggle for Patty to know she isn't being natural with Morgan, but unable to stop herself from doing so.

Good response. Success and failures is real life and hell ya to Patty for being vulnerable and showing us the struggle!! Reminds everyone that owning and training a bird takes work and hopefully makes everyone think twice before running out to get one before doing proper research and inner thought.
