I have never thought of using hide glue to reglue on a vintage pickguard. My old Harmony Sovereign has quite a thick original pickguard and hide glue is going to work great. I will make some cauls as well.

I've worked with hide glue on piano action components, but getting that pick guard aligned perfectly 'the first time' looks challenging to me. Thanks for the demo!

One thang I did, as Im a Reg Ga Tech Civil Eng in Ga and Ak, I have some understanding of uneven stress distribution. Hence I never take off all the strings at once. I change them out one at a time. Done that ever since I bght this 1972 D-28 from Sam Ash in ATL. Just an idee fer the folk following you.

Hi. Is titebond glue good for a pickguard

    huh
what's the advantage of this method vs dan erlewine style, just putting a thin sealer finish on the exposed wood then using doublesided tape like modern pickguards have? the argument is that with modern tape the pickguard would never risk further cupping or splitting the wood like the old ones bonded right to the bare top did when they shrank
is it just a thing with reusing original pickguards where they may not be quite flat enough or smooth on the bottom enough for tape to work right?

The main reason is the original PG looks better. If it has not cupped or shrank much it looks so much better than a new taped on PG (especially the black ones). I have done many taped on new PGs with the bare wood sealed, but it is a judgement call.
      Thanks,
      Joe

@@ElderlyInstruments what about tape on the bottom of the _old_ pickguard? does that just not tend to come out well?

@@ElderlyInstruments Totally agree. And this tape stuff is really quite temporary. Especially in a hot car. Ask me how I know.
