- I must apologise for the hitch in the voice-over at 1:30 , I am not sure quite what happened but I hope it does not spoil your enjoyment too much. The number of finches visiting our gardens has increased over recent years partly due to the shortage of natural food in the wild and the increase in the use of nyjer seed and sunflower hearts in garden feeders. There has been a significant increase in the Goldfinch, Siskin & Brambling numbers visiting our gardens and a staggering over ten fold increase in the number of Redpolls.

Thank you, Maurice. Great illustration. We're not far from you in mid Powys so see most tho I've yet to spot a Brambling. We're fortunate to have "wooed" 2 pairs of Bullfinches and have seen three males on a few occasions. The Greenfinches seem to be the most 'possessive ' at the feeders.
As a novice birdwatcher I appreciate the learning. Also, my teenage niece commented on your lovely voice and we're both
impressed with your footage. Thankyou, Maurice.
Brilliant footage, was able to identify the small birds in a tiny local woods as goldfinch. There is quite a few of them, very busy birds, always seem to be active. Will have to get some sunflower seed feeders, but they do take from some cheap fat balls when other food is hard to find.
Love these birds you captured on video so nicely! Thanks for sharing Maurice.
without doubt a wonderful use of the internet.
so glad I found this site.
Had to comment on how informative and well put together this video is I'm usually pretty critical and fussy with what I watch but this is top tier stuff, and the voice is easy on the ears.
Thanks for posting. Wonderful footage. Have been getting swarms of Goldfinches visiting this winter. I bought those special Niger seed /Sunflower heart feeders with the slots only finches can access;
filled them with fresh seeds and they have been gorging on the stuff. Lovely sight. Greetings from NE England.
Great footage here which helps so much when you're trying to level up your identification skills! Some inspiration here too for keeping things natural while feeding our garden birds. Thanks
I am a breeder and bird watcher. I hope support for my page and I wish you every success
We currently have a flock of siskins visiting our garden. This is another variety of bird I couldn't put a name to, but was able to identify thanks to your video. You're right about them being feisty.
Great video , with fantastic music and a soothing voice 👍🏻
Great video and useful narration. Thanks for sharing
Wonderful video -- so beautifully filmed and commented. The many beautiful varieties of finches and the very detailed information of the finches are just fantastic. Thank you so much for sharing, Maurice.
Thank you so much for your very generous comments, I'm pleased that you enjoyed watching.
Great informative video with beautiful photography. In my local London park I have only spotted the Goldfinch and the Chaffinch so far. All the Chaffinches seem to have the fungal infection you mention in the video - some more than others. Their song reminds me of a horse neighing!
absolutely beautiful footage many thanks again maurice. nature is beautiful. Thank-you for taking the time to upload. I love it
Thank you Chrissy for taking the time to watch and your generous comments, they are always appreciated.
Thank you for these lovely videos. Splendid filming and such intricate detail on each bird. xx
Thank you Esther for watching and taking the time to comment.
Great film Maurice, love the shots of the roosting and young Goldfinches. We've had a breeding pair visiting our tiny garden in Hackney, London for the first time this year.
Thank you Ian for your comments. Glad to hear that you have had a pair visiting your garden this year, hopefully now that they have found your garden you will get quite a few more visiting this winter.
Fantastic information! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I enjoyed your terrific video very much. The still images and video are beautiful. Thank you for all your efforts.
What an excellent guide to finches!
Thank you so much for this video and likewise I have learnt a lot from it. In your video you said I recall that Greenfinches were slightly on the decline, but there have been about 3 pairs in my garden on the feeder which have been lovely to see, also today I saw the first Goldfinch of this year 2021. I feel very honoured when the birds visit my feeder, the pheasants are also pleased because the small birds drop a lot of food on the floor, though I do feed the pheasants as well.
What a beautifully filmed and narrated video.
Great video thank you
such beautiful birds, loved the video, thanks for sharing this, take care.
Thank you for your comments, they are always much appreciated.
Thankyou Maurice, what a lot lave learned, now must get back to the camera!
Very informative and pleasant to listen to as well as beautiful and relaxing
What a joy! Thank you so much.
Just discovered this video..... wonderful...
So lovely Maurice! Thank you!
Thank you Annemieke for watching and commenting.
I have not seen a single Finch in the garden.
Even though there are 21 feeders on trees and feeding poles as well as dishes and ground feeders, all I get are Starlings ( over 50 ), wood pigeons, collard doves, Blue Tuts and Coal Tits and the occasional Robin and Blackbird.
The feeders have a huge variety of seeds, I also have suet pellets, suet blocks and fatballs, peanuts.......you name it, I bought it ! Unfortunately, Niger seed is never touched.
Honestly, I would love to attract a variety but the Starlings have become pests.
Your videos are very enjoyable and are of great quality. We only have one native finch here in Tasmania called the Beautiful firetail but we also have three finches introduced from Britain - the Goldfinch, Greenfinch, and House Sparrow.
Subscribed!
Thanks for your generous comments. It was interesting to hear about the introduction of the goldfinch, greenfinch and house sparrow as I was just reading about the introduction of the European blackbird in the 1860s and how well it has established itself in South Australia and Tasmania. Thanks for Sub , I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to checking out your videos.
I have all the finches visit my garden daily now for 5 yrs ,theres about 8 bull,12 gold,4chaff,and about 18 to 20 greenfinches i had siskins too but theres only a pair left now.the greenfinches come each day and bully the 9 feeders i have out ,mainly sunflowerhearts, millet sawflower,,nyjer.berry suit cake.
Fantastic video mate loved it well done wonderful filming. Thanks. Terry
Many thanks Terry for your kind comments.
Very Good Maurice
I loved this one
its amazing the work you have done here:)
Thanks for the comment, it was really just a labour of love.
All of this wild birds are so beatiful!!But my favorite is the eurasian siskin!!
lovely film i wish i had all those bird types in my garden.
Thank you Paul, the number of finches visiting the garden this year seem to be down a bit but I'm glad to say that the number green finches is well up after their severe decline a few years ago.
An outstanding video, a joy to watch, and an education. :-)
Thank you Sue for watching and for your generous comments, have a good weekend. Maurice :-)
I love your video - thank you very much 🙂The timbre of your voice is simply stunning. I have been feeding wild birds in the north of Austria in the countryside for 2 years now and today a goldfinch came by for the first time 🤗 Flocks of siskins have been with me for weeks and I really hope they will breed here too? The buffet I offer is rich and there is also a small natural forest behind the house. The long-tailed tits, for example, have now - in March - apparently already flown further north again. Will the goldfinch stay a little longer?
thank you.. i miss these
Seen my first finches after 3months of using bird feeders tables etc!
Very common backyard birds in Western Europe. Nice overview.
Great video, have had bull finches in my garden they love the sunflower Hearts but have seen goldfinch and siskins roaming around in flocks near my garden , probably because of all the conifers but they never seem to come down to any of my feeders. I've tried everything playing calls out to them but they seem to take no notice. How would I be able to attract them in the garden ?
I'm glad I stumbled upon this channel, the videos are great and full of information! Do you get to see hawfinches in the UK? I live in northern France and I was surprised to see one coming this winter in my garden.
Thank you so much for your kind comments. Yes we do have the hawfinches but they are fairly scarce, I have not seen one yet as they mainly seen in the south-east of England
The finch with red head is called house finch in SC USA. They love the mineral bars used for cattle feeding.
Jesus Cristo Reina no it's not this is goldfinch in the UK there is no house Finch in the wild but you could buy it from pet shops
At the minute 11:29 is what I call House Finch. The finches you are showing are simply gourgeous. In South Carolina we have many types of finches but most the ones you showed are not here. I raised and bred many types of canaries in Connecticut and realeased the new born. They flew away in the Summer before the fall. Some people say they cross the atlantic to the canary island. I have many song bird in my area but some of them are not easy to spot.
Jesus Cristo Reina this is called redpoll even in the state I love birds I have Gold finches Canaries and siskins and house Finch
I know they look similar but house finish is much bigger than the redpoll
Your great;)) Thank you for a good video. I LIKE YOUR VIDEO! # 13
What camera and lens do you use? The video is brilliant!
Hello my friend
Best!!
I have a question.
Siskin Please tell us what kind of grain you eat deliciously.
Siskin like grain ??
,brambling , Bull finch like grain ?
Think you my friend
I’ve only managed to get goldfinches so far.
I am new to birding and I find it fascinating, but what is the bird that makes a squeeking bird call throughout most of the video? is it a Chaffinch call?
Hi Mike, the chirping in the background is from a colony of about 40 house sparrow. The only time that they are quiet is when the sparrow hawk visits.

ONELOVE FEATHERED ONES
Is there anything you can do to help the chaffinches with scaly mite? I saw a chaff in my garden yesterday that frequents and he was lifting his leg up like it was injured. This could be it.
Great video but the scientific name of the Linnet is Carduelis cannabina not Carduelis flavirostris that is the Twite.
had a hawfinch in my garden couple of days ago
Nice one!, what a lovely bird to see in the garden, apparently there have been a lot more about this year than normal.
I have not seen a single finch.
Their feeder with Niger seed is untouched.
What is going on ?
Fantastic video Maurice! I just stumbled upon your channel and I have to say, your content is very professional and beautifully put together. I have a few questions to ask if that is allright! Firstly, I am aware of what seeds most birds enjoy but I was wondering if you could recommend any plants and bushes that your birds like, as I am looking to convert my garden into a nature garden but am unsure of the best plants to attract birds of all kinds. Secondly, I have seen a juvenile Spotted Flycatcher around my house and in the paddocks next door and am looking to try and attract him to the garden because he is beautiful, however, I am totally lost on how to attract him, as he seems to only enjoy flies! I was wondering if there was anything I could plant or do to keep him in the area. Thankyou in advance.
Thank you Nick for your kind comments. As well as plants that attract the birds it is important to make the general habitat attractive to birds by providing small trees where birds fist alight when entering the garden, small bushes or hedges where they can find easy cover from predators, and open areas of grass, not manicured lawn, some left rough and some lightly strimmed for ground feeders. Also leave a few areas of bare soil. Water in the form of bird baths, small ponds and particularly running water for drinking and bathing is essential. Rowan or mountain ash is one of the best small trees and cotoneaster or pyracantha as hedges or bushes all are good berry providers. Plants that provide seed such as teasel, thistles, knapweed, ragwort, birds-foot-trefoil, and forget-me-not all help to attract birds.
From my observations of the spotted flycatcher they like to wait on low perches for flies to settle or pass by so I would suggest something like the herb marjoram, which in my garden seems to attract hundreds of fly, planted in a sunny position close to suitable low perches.
I hope some of these suggestions are helpful.
Thank you very much! I plan to buy some plants you have recommended in the near future.
I've recently spotted the bird at 8:40, does anyone know what type of finch this is? So pretty!
Male and then female Chaffinch.
I find that the female Chaffinch can be mixed up with the female Greenfinch if you only catch a glimpse. Lovely song
@@TrefyJot aww thank you yes she is so frequent in my garden!
Anybody tell me what the finch is with the black cap after the bullfinches at 1.25 to 1.34? Thanks.
Had a quick look and think you're seeing the Female Bullfinch.
May I ask what camera did u use here and lens? Thanks
Excellent viewing but annoying music.
