A song you never wants to end… A great history teller. Reminds me of Jim Croce, Gordon Lightfoot and John Denver..❤️! Loved your reaction 😍❤️❤️..

I've been a fan of his for decades. He does his own thing and doesn't copy anyone.

Guy Clark was a significant influence on Lyle, and this was the first song Guy ever wrote, he himself never recorded it, he said after hearing Lyle perform it that it was now his.

@Dave Giaimo Dude, it's always a treat seeing your comments in here--you're a music icon and legend in the history of PHS and elsewhere! I agree about Lyle being an incredible artist. He is different, talented, hilarious and serious, made out with Julia Roberts (and probably more). What a stud.

The melancholy from all his songs is thicker than fog in winter and takes me back to days of peace and love.
I hope you have a blessed Christmas and a much better new year, Don

I saw Lyle sing this song in Troy NY when he, Guy Clark, John Hiatt and Joe Ely were touring together. The four of them sat side by side on chairs and reeled off one great song after another. Lyle was at one end of the group and Guy Clark was at the other end. Before he started singing, Lyle over at Guy and said..."this is the best song that Guy Clark never sang". It's one of my favorites.

Just searched for a reaction of this after hearing Lyle do this live in another video. Lyle tells the story in the video of how this was the first song ever written by Guy Clark, which Lyle notes, "just ain't fair" --- no way listening to this or even reading it would you think it is even within the realm of possibility for this to be a first time effort from anyone. Some people just have an incredible innate gift right from the start, and Guy and Lyle are both among that group.

Such a beautiful song, one of my favorites by Lyle, and you're right, it probably was written about a musician, I never realized it til you pointed it out though. I guess we'll never know for sure since the original writer of the song, Guy Clark, is dead as of 2016.

Lyle Lovett reminds me of John Prine. It’s not that they are alike but they both hit that same spot in your soul! Fantastic pick and reaction!

Thanks for this Don, it's a great one. I've become a bigger fan of Lyle's work in recent times - I liked him in the '90s, but his music resonates even more with me now. I really liked your commentary on this one as well. Keep up the good work!

You along with everyone else here should delve more into Lyle's catalog of 'stories'.
As a massive fan, from the early 90's til now I have seen him live in concert 31 times (twice on the front row!) His dry candor between songs are worth the price of admission alone and how he emphasizes EVERYONE else in his Band to show off their talent tells you even more about the Man.
If you can, find any of the ones he did with Francine Reed and his Large band. Those 2 together was magic and man did they put on a Live Show.

@hempchimp Yeah, Lyle is a true musician and artist. Very cool that you got to see him up close and got to hear his. comments between songs. I've done reviews/reactions to five of his songs and one he did with Vince Gill, so I'm definitely a fan and have been for thirty years or so. Not quite like you since you're the resident leader in the clubhouse, but definitely a fan!

Or allegorically,....this is his life. Inside this house being the man himself. There's not much in here. If you come inside, sleep with me, get to know me, this is it. My few internal possessions. You're probably going to be let down because it's all about my music, my dreams. I'm a rolling stone.

I always took the line 'Except this pair of boots maybe, And that funny yellow vest' to be an oil rig workers cloths and uniform, and it explains why he will only be around next fall maybe... could be wrong... I know that Guy Clark's Grandfather (well the boyfriend of his Grandmother) was an oil rig worker, could have been a tip of the hat to him... he was very close to him also... Guy wrote the song, his first song he ever wrote apparently...

As others have mentioned, this was the first song that Guy Clark ever wrote. It was always believed that Guy had never recorded it. Apparently, he thought it wasn’t all that good. After Guy passed, a demo of the song was discovered in his collection and it’s finally been released. I believe he was mistaken about the quality of the song and his version stands up there with Lyle’s. It would be cool to see you react to the original. ruclips.net/video/V9hrL1E_BF4/видео.htmlsi=_kT154TrwsJdrOdV
