I tried the PRS SE Silver Sky Maple in Nylon Blue - OMG I wasn’t expecting this…

  • Today I popped into ‪@PMTVUK‬ in #Cambridge. I tried out a couple of Fender #telecaster guitars and I have to be honest I felt a little “Meh!” The set up on these guitars don’t make me feel compelled to want to even purchase one. I needed to try out something different and saw the ‪@prsguitars‬ SE Silver Sky Maple in Nylon Blue. I have tried an earlier one with a Rosewood neck so I wasn’t expecting anything different, but I was so wrong! My understanding is that this guitar has not been changed apart from the fretboard. I kid you not the sustain and warmth coming from this guitar took me breath away . It was snappy, and it wasn’t as sharp in tone as what I think a Stratocaster should sound like. For me it brought something different to the S-Type table. This guitar was perfectly set up for me and immediately I bonded with it and spent ages playing on it. The neck seems noticeably chunkier than I remembered the rosewood neck to be and the guitar seemed so much more chimey in a smooth way. If I was to purchase an S-Style in an SSS configuration, I think that I will probably not be getting one from the company that initially designed them!

Nice playing, I’m disappointed to hear that the neck is chunkier than the rosewood version. My fingers aren’t very long , and I like playing barre chords with my thumb unfortunately the neck sounds like a deal killer and I prefer the maple.

In hindsight, I tried a rosewood again and they are much the same. To be honest, that initial 'chunky' feel may have come from the combination of visual aesthetic and actual feel with the maple fretboard seemingly extending the perceived depth of the neck. Purely subjective as the specs are the same in terms of shape (I double checked that because my initial sense surprised me). What did surprise me was the difference in time between the two but again one was tried in a noisy guitar shop and the other a noisy guitar show. I've not been able to get either home to try them out and sadly PRS won't let me borrow one even though I only live seven miles away from their European HQ (I don't have the following on socials to justify it for them.) I really do like the maple SE Silver Sky and could very easily have one but then I would have to let another guitar go...
