I stumbled upon this by accident. I was the person responsible for her being on that site and also the one who found a supply of the steel form that is used in the ribs. It is a deformed angle which was common in ship building at that time but is no longer used. By chance I found a company in the UK that still had the forming dies in their store and even better were happy to do a very small run for the project at almost cost price. Sadly I no longer live in Auckland and watch from afar. Toroa was the last of her class to be built in the world and is the only one left still in coal fired steam. She is the largest marine steam restoration project in New Zealand and among the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. She sunk at Birkenhead wharf during a violent storm when a log hit her on the water line and stove a plank in. I was the first on seen as the over water alarm was connected to my phone and went off at 2 am. This started the longest four weeks of my life with 20 hour days becoming the norm. Many experts thought that she would break her back but she survived, testament to her design and build all those years ago.
+Good Evening thank you so much for sharing your history with this beautiful vessel much I didn't know, She's a piece of Art that's for sure. I'm glad you instigated a huge part of its survival and restoration I hope one eat she's back apon the water. Have a beautiful week ahead.
She looks a little rough on the outside, but once you are on board it's really not in too bad of shape, all things considered. That is a lot of history they are putting back together. I hope to are able to finish it.

A lot is being discussed about the water tight bulkheads. The fore and aft engine room bulkheads were in fact originally built as water tight bulkheads, when we first took her over we found the sealing glands for the drive shafts laying in the bilge where they had been for a long time. The fore and aft bulkheads were not water tight as they had only been built as collision bulkheads. Fun fact, at some point early in her life the forward bulkhead has been moved forward to allow the boiler to be moved forward as they needed more space between the engine and boiler to fire her efficiently.
I bought an old stolen and recovered Mazda off the owner, (it turned out to be a good car after replacing the missing radiator, battery and ignition, etc.), and in amongst all the junk inside, I found an entire copy of a survey report for that vessel. I THINK it was done by the Ministry of Transport, but I'm likely wrong on that. This was years ago, and it wasn't pretty reading - much work required. I seem to recall that I was talking about this with someone who knew someone who was involved in the attempted restoration of the old girl, and I'm pretty sure I passed it on to him. I hope so, as there was just an enormous amount of info in that report. I definitely don't have it anymore, and I would never throw something like that away. I truly hope it ended up in the right hands, and was of some use to whoever is tackling that very big job. All the best with the project.
