A lot of people don't remember the days when Britain had a CATOBAR navy. I've always said that if the old Ark Royal had been around in 1982, with those Phantoms and Buccaneers, the Falklands War would never have happened.
CATOBAR is a system used for the launch and recovery of aircraft from the deck of an aircraft carrier. Under this technique, aircraft launch using a catapult-assisted take-off and land on the ship using arrestor wires. Although this system is costlier than alternative methods, it provides greater flexibility in carrier operations, since it imposes less onerous design elements on fixed wing aircraft than alternative methods of launch and recovery such as STOVL or STOBAR, allowing for a greater payload for more ordnance and/or fuel. CATOBAR can launch aircraft that lack a high thrust to weight ratio, including heavier non-fighter aircraft such as the E-2 Hawkeye and Grumman C-2 Greyhound.
I agree Les but if the Argentines had waited a year it would have Malvinas thanks to the defence cuts that would of happened ....luckily they didnt and she was a lucky lady (thatcher). BTW not an armchair admiiral....did my 22
@@daveco4645 absolutely spot on. The knott review under thatcher would have left the door wide open. Both the Hermes and invincible would have been gone.
Many Ark Royal veterans involved in the task force must have felt the same way.... Andy Auld, from phantom to sea harrier..... Can't remember his name, but the chap flying choppers whose wife was on the supply ship alongside Ark actually flew the helicopter which got the Santa Fe in South Georgia...... Beautiful old ship, sadly scrapped with no dignity..... Let's hope the old Hermes yet escapes the cutters torch
I think the original music suited far better, and not just because I was playing drums on the recording, but because it is strongly associated with the program.
Remember the M A A at h m s Raleigh 1964 Mr. R P CALNAN a very fair man. Dealt with me for going walkabout for a few hours. Captains table, 5 days no9s
The series was broadcast in my native Finland in 1977 or so and was a great success.
Made when the RN had a fleet and the BBC made real documentaries
In the current climate, the BBC 'edit' would have the captain as black ............. innit???
@gregtaylor6146 plenty of black crewmen aboard Ark Royal. Shown in the original documentary.

Not Ex military or British (proud NZer) but imagine the Phantons from Ark Royal taking on the Argentinian AF
I have the series on DVD, very enjoyable. Time to watch it once again.
Was it officially released or just recorded from the TV? I am looking for these series... Thanks for the answer.
Cool TV series.. a mate of mine flew Sea Hawks on the Ark Royal long before this series was made... thanks from NZ 👍🇳🇿
With all the repeats the BBC put on these days I wish they'd put this TV series on I used to love it as a child growing up in the 1970's
I watched this while my husband was somewhere in the world and clock watching until he was home safe from his duties 🙂
Just heard Rod Stewart, Sailing, on the radio, so had to look up this fantastic series.
One grate ship I had the honor of been on board
I didn’t know it only had one grate, the US carriers have seven grates
Old days, I joined early 1982, just in time for the Falklands, had Ark been about, no Falkland's war.

Remember the series like yesterday
when i worked for the navy i was a fighter pilot and flew the sea vixen, then the phantom, before moving to dundee to fly the new tornado.
Fabulous thanks for Sharing, although I have it on DVD good to see on RUclips, I served on her 1969-72
Was at HMS Sultan when this was shown in 76... Wafus getting sea time in 😮
While you were on a concrete frigate😅
I was a PTI on her great time indeed
My old beautiful shipm1976/77. Tractor Driver / Chockman nickname GANNETGARFORTH
I wasn't in the series because I joined the Ark in 1977, but loads of the faces are familiar.
Nice 1,i'm on there somewhere
I knew someone called And y Green from the Ark Royal I wonder if he's still about ?he was from Pembrokeshire
That deck looks ridiculously small. Love your work. Ric from Oz 🙍♂️🇭🇲🦘😎👍
We had 38 of these carrier after the 2nd world war.
Only 2 of this type, and 6 fleet carriers made during the war

HMS Hermes could manage the Bucaneer surely although I know the Centaur a sister ship couldn’t.
76 l was there..

Había que ser muy valiente para atreverse a apontar ahí.
prefer the original series with the original soundtrack!
😄😀😃😁
What does the RO stand for?
The letter 'R' is the flag superior for aircrft carriers, and each carrier is given a number......in Ark Royal's case 09, hence R09.
