- KYOTO VIDEO takes a look at the Blue Blur's anime debut from the 90s. Does it belong on any "Worst Sonic Media Ever" lists or does it do the Fastest Thing Alive justice?

Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie was licensd by ADV and is currently out of print. - Кино
I used to really like this ova because I LOVED the backgrounds and the general mystic of the Planet Freedom setting. Between Sonic's home being a made from junked airliner, to Land of Darkness being a post-apocalyptic New York City, and how the "moon" is planet Jupiter.
Which begs the question does the Sonic OVA even take place on Earth (and for that matter the games/are they Earth?)? Or an alternate universe where Earth's been through a near biblical disaster?
Not even Sega can make up their minds on that.
The original sonic game's art style was influenced by eizen suzuki's paintings. Sonic used to be all about that aesthetic.
There are times when I wonder how deep did the animation team dive into the available lore a dev notes when making this OVA. Sarah has elements of of not just a future Amy, but also the original pitched version of Sonic 1 where Sonic had a human GF named, and I wish I was making this up, Madonna.
God that part where you talked about how people in the past called this OVA the worst reminded me of certain channels that used to be awesome had a review where someone said that.
God good our media literacy was bad in the 2000's and early to mid 2010s. I blame penny arcade and yahtzee.
Oof, that era where the internet let Channel Awesome be the final word on anything it reviewed was unforgivable. I knew someone who didn't watch Perfect Blue for years just because Bennett the sage didn't like it 😑
@@dabunnydabunny1243 that's not the reviewer faults. that's your friend that can't make an opinion of his own
Yeah, Bennett's a hack of a reviewer.
Thank goodness all online reviews today are only made by the most capable, articulate and educated experts making entirely good-faith criticism. We'll never get bad online reviews by total amateurs ever again.
Never, ever, ever again.
Ever.
I own this OVA on DVD. To me it's the REAL Sonic the Hedgehog Movie.
It's so awesome. It's the only animated or live action work I've ever seen that actually conveys the necessary sense of speed.
Well done for acknowledging and absolutely nailing the description of the soundtrack. Perfectly epitomises 90's SEGA for me.
Is it just me or does the music from the Sonic OVA feel like it’d be right at home in Sonic CD?
Studio Pierot and Toei did more with Sonic on a shoestring budget more than Hollywood ever could.
Toei made Sailor Moon and Dragonball Z
Pierrot made Naruto Shippuden and that anime about the blue haired guy who has an appetite to rival Goku (I don't know what it's called)
This is my sixth favourite anime film
That freedom planet joke was good
I wish they would release a Blu-Ray HD remaster of this movie.
This is honestly one of the best “modern” interpretations of sonic to date Including the recent movie
HEY Sewer shark is fucking amazing I still play it
I watched the VHS tape so much that I almost broke it from a rental store
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic &Knuckles was my peak Fandom when I was a kid.
I still have my old Sonic: The movie VHS tape that I bought at Suncoast at the Wayne Hills Mall in the 5th grade...oh the memories.
Oh, and also "You might know everything I'm going to do, but that's not going to help you since I know everything you're going to do! STRANGE, ISN'T IT?!"
Now now you two, perfectly symmetrical violence never solves anything.
And I still have my VHS purchased from Sam Goody in my local mall.
I may not have an easily accessed VCR anymore, but ah well! Still got it.
fun fact: The voice actor who plays Dr.Robotnik in the english dub was the same hill billy hick that was in the original Texas Chainsaw massacre film
This ova for me was basically a culmination of everything that defined the bright vibrant world and spirit of Sonic the Hedgehog that was teased in the animation for Sonic Cd , especially with how much it completely embraces what sonic was, one thing I loved a lot about the 90s video game adaptations was how much they clearly took place in the same world as the game did but was in a tweaked version of it, Angel Island from Sonic 3 became South Island . It captured the Spirit of Sonic in the 90s in way that ignorant Americans never could. Street Fighter 2 does the same exact thing but even better. Japan knows that first and foremost Video Game adaptations are always meant to be the fan service equivalent of cookies, not a three hour CGI tech demo before they bust out the next one.🤷🏾♂️
I think Japan knows the feel of the vodeogame in their Anime not just Sonic but also Mario, Kirby, Bomberman and Pokemon
@17:53
Just FYI, they finally got the original soundtrack of the OVA, along with the complete song of "Look Alike": ruclips.net/p/PLbGNUtFOh-FjQKLgGsvWCK9e75MSQRG05
An old favorite of mine. Excellent score
I had saw the trailer for this ova on sonic jam for Saturn. When I saw the vhs, I got it
Sonic is way past cool.
and this video made my Monday better.
"Still better than 'I'm Too Sexy.'"
Hahaha, *NO IT ISN'T.*
i dig how this film looks wish they had done more stuff like it . what i love about the uk sonic comic was sonics attitude he was brash and had a punk attitude was brill
I find it strange that, with Sonic R, Underground, 06, and certain things in the Archie comics, that this OVA would even be considered to be among the worst things in Sonic's history. Weird how time changes our perceptive on things.
06 always been considered the worst ever since it came out
17:42 I keep looking at that weird dish in the rubble and keep thinking its the Enterprise
I’ve loved the Sonic OVA from way back in very early 2000 when I was 10 years old n I still luv it 2 this day not just as a guilty pleasure, but also as 1 uv my earliest introductions 2 anime.
I first learned about the 'Sonic' OVA from a Japanese promo that was featured in 'Sonic Jam' when you go into the in-game 'theater'. Overall, I liked the OVA. It was definitely A step up from 'Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog', or 'Sonic Underground' (I had yet to see 'Sonic SatAM' since my local ABC affiliate didn't air it. Opting for ''local news' instead.) Not the best, but far from the worst.
I can't believe the sonic ova is in licensing limbo :/
I heard a rumor that this anime was supposed to be a full series but wasn't sucessful so when it was brought to the west they called it Sonic the movie
In the footage credits you forgot about that video that tried reimagining Sonic (1:42)
This movie was what got me into sonic in the first place.
I've never seen it, but it looks too good to pass up
Great video. I've thought the same thing in regards to the OVA being like a send-off to the classic era of Sonic.
I was so hoping you'd cover this!!
...Heeeeeeeeeeyyyy, Freedom Planet! I hope you're excited for the sequel! We're working hard on it.
6:23 Excuse me?! Magic Knight Rayearth is anything but "poor third-party support". Sure, it released extremely late in the Saturn's American lifespan, but it's still a great game and one of the system's best!
I probably need to try it out once I get my MODE installed.
honestly the OVA is an utter trip, while i enjoyed it... it kinda aged quite poorly in regards to its dubbing(part of its characters are also flawed), however the animation is still beautiful to this day.. also if i had seen the sega saturn ads if i was even alive then, i'd still buy it or at least convince my parents to buy it. i love weird shit man, same with the dreamcast.
edit: also yeah... a lot of the sonic shorts aged like milk, some jokes are old meme stuff which to me will always hold timeless nostalgia. some jokes also just did not age well at all regarding *some* topics, then again I won't outright say the animators and team is homophobic, transphobic or whatever. they were likely teenagers and young adults in their late teens, so i'll give them the benefit of the doubt.
For Tails, they cast a child to be Tails in Sonic Heroes. It went well
You didn't happen to be on the Sonic Retro Forums back in the day, did you?
15:10 Believe it or not, there is one critic who does.
Sonic Live is definitely the worst. It's a good thing it's caught up in so many legal rights issues that it's never been reprinted and probably never will...
What song is on the first part
Check the credits
Being one of the first ovas ive seen, this movie has a special place in my heart.
Regardless of a setting's logic no matter how lore creative, and reality defying it can be, it's total bullshit that a fucking _Ice Bridge_ containing a stream of _Magma_ is the only thing keeping two separate realms of existence apart from from collapsing in on one another or from falling apart. No amount of Sci-fy bullshit can explain that.
And I always thought Sara was just the first incarnation of Mimi from Digimon.
Similar design, similar spoiled bratty personality, can't be a coincidence.
They're only 3 years apart from each other.
Honestly I think this does a better job of bringing the games to life as animation than either of the two animated series' did in the 90s. It gives you a lot less that conflicts with the game world. Both of those shows, for different reasons but in equal measure, had a kind of alien feeling that kept them from being a 1-to-1 conversion from the video games.
all I can say this video is WAY PAST COOL ^_^ can't beat Sonic ever,
the fuckin animation tho
Fascinating
Better than sonic boom at least😂
The games or the cartoon, because the cartoon is hilarious
@erichfiedler1481 Both,the cartoon sucks(thats why is cancel)
@@danielanjos1986 you have poor taste if you think the cartoon sucked, it was fun, it made me laugh with it's clever writing and fun animation, also Sticks was the funniest character for how bonkers she was
@erichfiedler1481 you have bad taste, you may like garbage but don't blame me or everyone else for thinking you are wierd, that show sucks balls LOL
Not a good movie by any standards, but still better than Sonic Shuffle. (But then again, taking a hard whack from a claw hammer to the testicles is better than Sonic Shuffle)
The ova is better than sonic x
4kids voice cast sounds better than this.
First
Naw the ova is awful. Only the action scenes are good.
At least it’s not dubbed by 4kids.
