  • Hello Friends! This week we are reorganizing and cleaning out the workroom. I re-org my white board and put some new stuff on there, clean out some of my fabric stash and show you what is in there, and get a whole bunch of the UFO's on my board crossed off! It was a very productive week. If you need some UFO motivation, this one is for you!

Many a years ago, a costumer suggested saving 1 yard of any project fabric you have left over for repairs and sizing changes. She 'saved' the fabric by tacking it into the clothes they went with; like an extra layer under the lining of a jacket. That way it aged along with the project so it didn't look too different if used for patching/changes.

Oh, yes. _"The PURGE."_ I'm doing the saaaaame thing, and to my whole house, as well.
My Aunt died in October. I spent a month and a half with my Mom and cousin living in her house trying to go through her personal stuff, (so my cousin wouldn't have to), to just...help. SIX _DAYS_ it took just to go through, sort, and donate her clothes, toiletries, make-up, purses, and shoes. Then there was the search for paperwork, (bills, accounts, bank statements, etc.), ugh...so many things, and sooooooooooooo much more to do. I came home completely changed. I told my husband: "That's it. I'm done. If I haven't touched it in years I don't care _how_ much I wanted to do the thing, it's getting donated. If I haven't worn it, donated! Papers are getting shredded, shelves are being built, closets redone, I'm fixing that damn door.... I don't even have any ready cash to spend on bins, shelves, paint, etc, but I'm doing it anyway. A. I'm tired of wasting time thinking: "I should..." but never doing it and _always_ feeling dissatisfied, and B. I don't _ever_ want anyone I love having to go through all my crap after I'm dead when all they really want to do is cry.
Good luck with _your_ purge, Noelle. It feels soooooo good!!

OK, I gotta tell you how I was taught to do pintucks. It was in a "French hand heirloom sewing" course that I took in the 1990s. First you pulled the three threads that de-marked your tuck. Then you re-wove the two outer lines that resulted from the pulling of the threads. It did make tucks that laid perfectly, but the work involved! My sample piece from the course is beautiful, but have I ever done since....no.

      @ritad673 2 года назад +5

This is incredibly impressive. Just genius. I can fully imagine the perfection of it, but hand weaving a thread back through yards and yards makes one hesitate---and we always want LOTS of pintucks, don't we!? Lol!! I think this method would be super for small vertical pintucks on the front of a blouse. I'd love to try it.

Watching cleaning/organizing can be so weird for me. It really depends on my headspace. Sometimes it can be so satisfying to see someone do, but other times it can send me into a guilt-fueled depression spiral.
I’ve been through a couple purge cycles, but for the most part I’m a hoarder. It comes from my Dad, and we both get it from his father. And it has to be genetic because Grandpa was career military while Dad was growing up so they couldn’t really hoard while they were moving around so much… (and yes, cleaning up Grandpa’s last house after he passed was awful, though thankfully pest-free and gross-crap-free)
But yay for you getting things done!
Last week I took a vacation, and I got a fair bit done on my ongoing skirt embroidery! I finished the dolphin pod I was working on and now I’m doing my most complicated bit of embroidery I’ve yet done, which is a giraffe loafing in front of a willow tree. I’ve just got the foliage of the tree to do, and maybe a little bit of outlining on the giraffe (undecided if I’ll do that or not).

I finished cursed secret pants. I don't have a sewing machine, and can't afford one, so I'm doing this all by hand. I'm trying to learn how to sew period, and my body feels weird, and nothing I make fits right, and it's just dumpster fire. This is fine.
    Purging stuff is totally normal.
Listening to this audio book called "The Green Rider". It's very fantasy, and keeping me out of my own head, which is great.

Ha! I was the 13th like! Lucky girl. :) Veronese renamed one of his most epic paintings to elude punishment. Folks got really upset about all the goings on in the painting when it was named for the last supper. It is now called "Feast at the House of Levi". The name was the only thing he changed. Therefore this renaming to avoid crap is an historically adequate action which goes with an historic style of gown. :)

Black and red were popular train colors, so dealing with the ick factor of She Who Shall Not Be Named aside, just keeping to a steam locomotive theme should be fine, especially if you add more black. That would be a way to cover the wonky buttonholes in the front, by adding more black trimming.

Lists are so satisfying, especially when marking things off. If I do extra things that aren’t on my list I always add them after I’ve done them just so I can immediately mark through them.

Yay! Organized workspace, lists checked off, projects done! How productive!
I actually went into my closet this week and pulled out some white cotton fabric that I got as a gift from a buddhist temple for performing for them. I've had it for years and never knew what to do with it. Buddhist monks use cotton for juban underwear kimono, so I've finally decided that's what I'll do. They also gave me lightweight linen, so summer underwear, too! Yay!
That crane, chrysanthemum, cherry blossom fabric is absolutely gorgeous! But, the balance of the pattern as I saw it makes it difficult do make it into anything. Cranes are considered a celebration for long life. There is a proverb, Cranes live 1000 years, turtles live 10,000 years. You will often see these, and especially the crane for New Year's, weddings, and on special certificates. So, maybe with your fabic, a table runner, a banner, or a dressy party skirt. But, it would be very hard for even me to cut into that.

❤❤❤❤❤wonderful clean out! Soon (the next 6 months) I will be renovating my garage into a craft studio. The house I moved into fully in June 2021 was built in 1948. It looks like the garage was an add on. So maybe 1950's or something. So it's too small for my jeep to be going in and out of. And it's storage still..... slowly unpacking. But when it's a studio, I will be able to put all my craft stuff (sewing, fiber related, jewelry making, and paper crafts). This is a dream come true. The reason I am sharing, is I have a dry erase board, and I will be putting mine up too! You have inspired me. Half of the garage wall is peg board!!!! I will be painting it white (kilz white). It's pretty dark. I am going to possibly have glass cube wall for white the garage door opens.... I'm so excited!!!!

Very satisfying to watch you get things done. I am currently felling seams by hand on my early medieval/viking age dress. It takes forever. May be because my gores cosist of several smaller gores. About 6 hours of hand sewing left on it. I really want it done before next weekend, but will see if I manage to squish in that much hand sewing.
I have fallen into the neverending hole of fanfictions, so I haven't prioritized sewing for the last week.
When I have mystery cotton-or-linnen I soak a confirmed cotton, a confirmed linnen and the mystery fabric in water and feel how it takes the water. Then I can compare the feel and how the fabric behave wet. Especially helpful to have the confirmed cottons and linnen samples to compare with, if it happens that the mystery fabric is a blend and the feel is somewhere in between.

I reorganized my fabric cabinet last autumn, sorting by fiber content and labeling each piece with the yardage, width, source and price, if I remembered that. I’m slowly working through the same deal with lace and ribbons. Thread spools are on the wall, organized by fiber and color. It was totally worth it. I used to keep a swatch book, but that seemed harder to keep up to date and not so relevant since I don’t buy fabric on marathon trips to NYC at present. I tend to focus on one outfit at a time and order swatches by mail.

Your board is very inspiring! I've just rearranged my sewing space and it seems fitting to add a board to help keep things organised. Apart from that, I do like the satisfaction of crossing things off the list. It is pleasing and motivating at the same time.
Thank you for just being you and sharing the moments with us. Isn't it a conundrum that fixing something can take so little time yet we put it off for so long?
I'm currently working on a smock dress made from a floral cotton sheet. Its been a hot summer here in Australia and this girl needs a cool dress to relax in! Currently watching the old Inspector Morse episodes after finishing Doc Martin. Yep, I enjoy English series! Also listening to Penelope Keith narrate an Agatha Raisin mystery.

I'm working on UFOs this year too so this was very motivating! It's nice to see other people working on the same kind of project. So far I've finished 6 items and mended 3 others. Gotta tackle my craft room next but it's overwhelming so I've been procrastinating.

Oh, I did the same thing this weekend! I moved my sewing desk, so I have better lighting and did some reorganizing. Purged a bunch of clothes. I started knocking some stuff out of my mending pile, both modern and historical. It was a very satisfying weekend. I'm totally going to copy your whiteboard because I'm so bad at keeping track of my projects, and it's a great idea!
On the train dress. My take is just because the author is a trash human doesn't mean you can't like it. I think it's gotten to the point that it belongs to the fans. Between fanfiction, parodys, cosplays, and historical mashups 😉 we own the story now.
That universe has been a happy place for me since I was in elementary school and I'm not letting go of something that's good for my mental health just because the person who first wrote it down is awful. The HP universe keeps my creative side flowing and is a constant source of inspiration.
But also, you do whatever you feel is best for you. I love your vlogy style videos. it's so nice to just chill and sew to.

I'm so pleasantly surprised to see this. 💕 For a long time, my offspring thought I was transphobic because I'm still a Potter fan. There's a big difference between appreciating someone's skill at a certain thing and what they've crafted vs. endorsing/agreeing with their personal views, and not too many people slow down long enough to think about it. I haven't purchased/read/seen any Potter stuff since the initial 7 books/8 movies, and have simply borrowed from friends/family (or digitally rented on one occasion) if I'm interested, and that's as far as my crapping on Rowling goes lol. I do, however, love crawling into huge piles of fan-content. I know it's Rowling's prerogative what is and isn't canon but dude there's so much potential and the fan content just shines with it.
Oh dear, please excuse my rant. It's just so nice coming across someone who gets it. :)

It’s not her opinion that I’m concerned about. It’s all the people that are harmed by her donating her billions to political organizations and candidates who will pass legislation to actively harm trans people. And the harm that me publicly wearing that dress will cause people because they see it as a sign of support.

Oh my goodness, thank you for showing your board and explaining your lists and project plans! I have a similar board, and list after list and I've been feeling quite badly about it. I have felt like I failed if I didn't complete things I wanted to do, or moved them off and did something else. I also have things that were "done" but came back into the to-do, like my 18th c dress that developed tears in the arms. But seeing yours, I think it's just fine! So maybe I'm fine too.
