    - Footage filmed on top of a Sydney tram heading south down George Street in 1906.
    - American boxer Jack Johnson filmed training at Rushcutters Bay in December 1908, in preparation for his World Heavyweight Championship title match at Sydney Stadium against Canadian Tommy Burns.
    - Daylight saving is introduced to NSW on 1 January 1917. Swimmers flock to the beach.
    - Rugby League representative game, SCG 5 June 1922. New Zealand Maori vs NSW Second Thirteen. This is the earliest known surviving film of rugby league action in Australia.
    - Excerpt from a government sponsored documentary on the major landmarks of the city of Sydney, circa 1927.

    Did they have drones !!! Some of this great footage looks like drone footage to me. In 1901 the population was 500,000 !!! Who built these incredible buildings ? Please don't say the convicts.
    I have many more questions regarding our "history" so I'll be doing my own research, starting with the oldest photos of Australia. Thanks for peaking my interest . I've got a feeling it's a rabbit warren.

      Well there are a few reasons for that
      One is car-dependence. No matter how many people, cars take up too much space in the same area at the expense of other users

    There was a punt across the harbour, not far from where the Bridge is now, that took cars across to North Sydney, grandfather said. My aunt would have just started work as a telephonist at the GPO, when this film was taken. She retired in 1960.

    The Rushcutters Bay 'stadium' was built for the fight between Tommy Burns and Bill Squires on August the 24th. 1908. Hugh D. Mackintosh presented both fighters with a 15ct. gold medal . I used to own the one that belonged to Billy Squires.

    Sydney looked like such a grand city in the 1920s with such beautiful sandstone buildings. .Now it just looks messy and ugly except for the harbour. Thank God the QVB was saved.

      Many of those buildings are still there if you take the time to look for them. My wife and I stay in The Australian hotel in The Rocks now and then, and spend the weekend walking the streets of the city just taking in the history (and stopping at the old pubs for a refreshing beverage when we get thirsty). I highly recommend it.

    It is thrilling to see Sydney as it was when my father was boy. This is the city he grew up in & loved. My how that landscape has changed. The only constant, apart from the terrain leading down to the Quay wd be the terrace houses at The Rocks I wd guess. Must be the only structures apart from the ferry wharfs that are still there today.

    Why does australia looks and feels like a western country it looks like america even tho being close to countries like malaysia and indonesia and speaks English why it's a great country

    • @Religious_man
      @Religious_man 2 года назад

      I still consider Oceania to be Far Eastern, not Western. Yet, not a part of Asia. We already know there are some English-speaking countries in the Eastern Hemisphere, such as Australia. That's why the International Dateline is out-of-place. I suggest putting it on Israel's northern and eastern borders, running it westward then northward to separate Europe and Turkey and running it northward/eastward until it gets on Russia's very long Western border and run it northward all the way up to the North Pole. Then run the rest of the IDL southward to the Red Sea, eastward along and just off the eastern coast of Africa all the way southward to Antarctica. There you go, West and East are separated, like the moon at sky zenith at 12 AM sharp.

      Look when the player is tackled the teams do not try and compete for the ball. Although it resembles a scrum I think this is an earlier primitive 'play-the- ball'
      A few years after this footage the rules were clarified which meant only the tackled player, the dummy-half and two defenders were allowed at the play-the- ball
