  • I was Loblaws evangelist for two decades, but they've turned mean. Reddit's r/loblawsisoutofcontrol is speaking up about Real Canadian Superstore and other Loblaw grocery chains. Here's my story that went viral in Canada.

During covid grocery stores made record profit. They were in no way hurting...I used to go to Zehrs because they had better produce. Now, it's ridiculously over priced and the quality of the produce and quality of service is abysmal. Also, they have greatly reduced the Vegan options to the point where I gave up completely at buying those products there. I've boycotted their stores and have taken my business elsewhere.

As a retail worker 1/3 of it boils down to the workers and/or lack there of with less people wanting to work these jobs making places hire who ever they can and the other 2/3's being corporate making dumb decisions/ being greedy not conducive to the customer and employees.
An example would be I as an Dollarama employee make min wage and due to the outrageous prices of the grocery stores more people have started shopping with us. Well the bagging section is to small meaning that I have to bag the big bags on the floor which slows me down meaning the customer is standing there waiting for longer along with the company polices of only having one till open at a time mixed with the available hours the manger has to book people per week at times it can seem like we're understaffed but we aren't (no self checkout due to it being a small store) also it's a 4 to 1 ration of cashier to customer for checkout.
Now you may say well can't I call someone up, yes I can but they are doing other things and most of the time can't come right away or didn't hear me so I have to wait the if that takes to long call them again (and risk getting told off) and/or someone else (if the line is longer than when I first called) all the while I have a growing line of people getting mad that they have to wait telling me to call someone else up If I don't do it fast enough for their liking if I'm dealing with another customer. And it being a min wage job people can rush up to a casual walk like they got all the time in the world.
Now on the employee end record profits but they can't do the bar minimum of an employee discount, they tested it and got rid of it after a month. There's a button on the till marked error correct to take off the last thing scanned within 7 seconds but they don't wants us using it, mangers have to bag checks in front of the store cameras that might be being watched somewhere else, along with store temperature also being controlled somewhere else.

Grocery stores are like this in the USA now too. No more baskets, 1 employee hiding in the back of the deli, bare minimum self checkout lanes open and then 75% of your items ring up higher than the listed price. I don't see it getting better and AI is already taking over fast food drive thrus...

Having a organized boycott can help speed things up but we can still do it on our own. I've been boycotting Sobeys (they are even worse than Loblaw) by myself for a year now and did most of my grocery shopping at local meat and veggie markets as well as dollar store. Now I'm so used to it, adding Loblaw to my boycott list doesn't affect me at all, plus I've also saved up so much by shop locally (they are typically 20%-50% cheaper than those greedy grocery chains). We could all do it, it's not hard. At first it may sound like a big change, but once you make the change and make it your everyday life, you can continue it months after months without feeling any inconvenience. 👍 Also trust me, if we really want to make this boycott work, we need much more than one month.
