I found a source saying that "Sedirea japonica live relatively shortly, usually blooming for no more than 4-5 seasons. It seems more likely that these plants need a cold period to enter the sleep phase giving the necessary rest. When the winter temperatures are too high, the plants just keep growing and eventually die of exhaustion. In winter, the plants need less water and they should dry well between watering, especially when they are grown in cold conditions. They will be less affected by exposure to low temperatures when dry. Fertilization should be eliminated until new growths appear and more watering begins in the spring."

Hi Danny, all of your blooms are beautiful!! My favorite is the Seidera Japonica, my absolute favorite!! I now have three and they are my very special girls in my collection. You spoke about the mini mark, Mr. Mark does not like my face, he didn't like my face on two separate occasions. No more Mr. Mini Mark for me. lol

Me and a friend had the same issue with our Mini-Marks this year. Mine aborted 2 spikes and produces another one currently. Let’s see how it goes with this one. Never had this issue with any other of my phalaenopsis. 😢

I'm so happy I found your channel! I can literally just listen and watch your orchid videos forever 😍
I bought my first Phals about a week ago and every morning that I open my eyes and see them I go "Yay! They are still alive!" I am absolutely in love with them.
I have previously just had succulents indoors, since in Finland the air gets really dry during winters, but the problem has been that the lack of sunlight makes it difficult to keep succulents alive or you can see that their growth gets warped because of it. This spring I threw most of them out.
We have one table in a small apartment next to west window. The four Phals pretty much take up all the space already (I think the Phals were all minis, so I'm praying they won't take over the whole table). I am not that worried about the sun burning the leaves, but if I see damage I'll adjust the blinds or move them away from the window. In winter I'm 99% sure that they actually need to be as close to the window as possible. Because of the cold we have mostly double layered windows, and the heat and light from the sun are minimal in winter too.
I have just been trying to figure out a plant that could thrive in our apartment. After studying Phals a lot, I do think they could do better than succulents. Also the flowers can be an added bonus if I manage to get some 😅
One of the orchids already had yellowing buds when we brought it home. I think one of the flower spikes might be slightly damage. I also changed pots for all of them, I didn't know at the time that that was a no-no, and I was worried of how much they abuse orchids in flowershops. Two of them had all of their aerial roots cut off 😭
But if the flowers go, I won't be too sad about it. The crown and the leaves remind me about succulents anyway, so as long as they look healthy, I am going to be very happy with them. I'm also kind of itching to do a proper repotting with them. It's soon going to be June anyway, so I will probably have to cut the flowers off actually 😅

I was interested to hear you say Phal. Mini Mark could be difficult and I can vouch for that. I have owned mine for about two years and was so excited to find it online as a good size seedling and thought they can flower on a fairly young plant. My plant has struggled and on deaths doorstep since it arrived. It’s back in moss and a ziplock bag to try to encourage more roots and leaves. We are just going into winter so not sure that I’ll see any action until next growing season.

Hey, Danny, thank you for mentioning your observations with phal. Orchid World. The leaves of my Orchid World are also slightly yellowing towards the crown. I thought I was overwatering her (and I gave a lot a water because she has a big root system). I’ll definitely move her somewhere more shady. You’re not the only one - all of my previous phal. Mini Mark (3 of them) have kept only the top leaf, they simply refuse to grow and survive (currently I’m trying for the fourth time).
I gave up my vandopsis Orange Sorbet because I grew tired of him waiting for a single leaf (not expecting flowers at all); two other friends are also having trouble growing other vandopsis orchids vegetatively (not even hoping for a flower spike). So I suspect vandopsis orchids are not very easy to grow and they test your patience to the max.

It‘s actually debatable whether the transfer of Sedirea/Hygrochilus as well as Ornithochilus into Phalaenopsis is justified. They could have been left as seperate genera, however with Sedirea japonica being classified as Hygrochilus japonicus. Meaning that one can decide for themselves how to refer to them, although Hygrochilus japonicus would make the most sense because it belongs to the same group as Hygrochilus parshii (Vandopsis parishii), Hygrochilus tsii etc.
But apparently the leading authorities seem to prefer to include small genera into other genera e. g. Neofinitia or Dendrochilum

Hi Danny and Happy Easter! Do you still have the Phal. Little One (Phal. hygrochila × Phal. japonica), and if yes, does it bloom? I got mine 6 years ago (in flower) and never re-bloomed since. The flowers looked more like japonica (not so dotted like hygrochila - ex parishii). It has beautiful leaves and roots. Thanks for any advice - much appreciated!

Hi Danny! Thank you for this awesome video! I noticed that you said this is the first blooming for your cattle jillicoc, but in your first orchid haul watch you showed it in bloom and talked about how all the buds had been eaten by thrips. Is this the same orchid?

I've got four of these, two plants already produced sheaths that dried without blooming, one of them has now a second, green sheath. I'm really curious how the flowers will look like, I would love a lot of C. mossiae qualities in them, but the plant shape suggests flowers should look more like C. harpophylla
