the fact that Tony drove his hero's 1961 Indy 500 car is so amazing!

Two of America's greatest... Robin Miller is having a ball, even looks around at one point as if to say, "Are you guys hearing these great stories from Super Tex?" What that would have been like had Stewart & Foyt been racing in the same era. Great Stuff!

AJ, the hardest of the hard men. Out ran Jan Opperman at the fairgrounds in two 50 lap races three days before Indy because Parnelli said he couldn't beat him. Never, NEVER will there be another AJ!

Those deep cockpits ... I do remember my dad taking us out to the stands outside the exit to turn 4, and we'd watch AJ (probably in that car a time or two) work as he'd approach the wall ... and notice how consistent he was at where and how distant he was from the wall - exactly the same nearly every lap (and he'd be CLOSE to the wall). Some laps, he worked harder than others - and as they recalled in this clip - it was fun to see that aspect of racing. I suppose in-car cameras give us a bit of that now. But I sure enjoyed being able to see them work the wheel thru the turns.

Are you talking about the 1964 race in Milwaukee? Big crash in turn 4. I was 8 years old and was there. Saw the car he won with 4 years ago at The Mile on display.

      It's the best!
In Milwaukee waiting for his team to arrive, he's told his rear engine Lotus blew up at the shop.
He'd won the night before in Springfield in his dirt champ car... so without his crew, he put on asphalt tires, after a couple of Warm up laps puts the dirt car on the pole!
His crew arrives for the race, he's strong all day, finishing second to Gordo.
      That's a wheelman.

One day at Indy, I was summoned by a crew member to see AJ right away...uh oh. By this time, I had made a few wheels for his drivers and he was all paid up. So, I was a little nervous; after all, this IS AJ we're talking about.
Turns out, AJ just wanted me to know that I wasn't the first one to use the leveraging concept on a steering wheel at Indy since he wrapped FRICTION TAPE on the steering wheel of this exact car to aid steering and improve feedback. He concluded by saying, "You just figured out a more elegant way of doing it." On that statement, I walked up and shook his hand for I had just been paid one helluva compliment.
I also enjoyed doing Tony's wheels, too. Like AJ, I found him to be a man of few words, but also very calculated and direct...no small talk with Tony. He knew exactly what he wanted, and we wouldn't stop remolding the composite thermoplastic until it was perfect...we always got along great.

Let’s be real. AJ was not always the most fan friendly, cheerful guy in the pits. As a young fellow I got to see AJ and Mario in their prime. Icons. Mario was in my experience far more fan friendly. I still rooted for AJ. I sensed even as a boy that AJ was a once in a generation phenomenon. I was privileged to see one of the greatest champ car races ever, the 1967 Trenton 200. AJ came from two laps down to win after running the field down twice during 190 green flag laps. Epic.

ah the watson style roadsters, they dont race them anymore but for special occasions where they run vintage, though there do build custome vintage style race cars at many shops, one so see a few of is the 98 parnelli jones car, and if you see one up close it is a beauty the lines are something else look like a rocket even sitting still from the side.

Fifty one Indy 500s under my belt, ... my two best Foyt memories include him in USAC Stocks on dirt at the big Indy Fairgrounds mile oval.
Secondly, AJ retiring unexpectedly on Pole Day '93 ... sitting in the stands... as track anouncers describe what's transpiring... AJ in tears on the mammoth PA system... it was magical.
Robby Gordon, his young hotshot team-mate had an incident... AJ felt he'd not focused enough on helping Gordon adapt to the track, including treacherous turn one.
    - Daytona 500 winner
    - 24 Hours of Le Mans winner
    - 4x Indy 500 wins
    - 35 consecutive Indy 500 starts spanning the '50's to the '90's!
Foyt was a standout amoung the Titans of the sport, throughout the pinnacle of the sport.
... Parnelli Jones, Dan Gurney, Mario Andretti, Bobby and Al Unser, McClusky, Johncock, Rutherford, Bettenhausen.
All this in midgets, sprints, dirt, asphalt, USAC Stocks on road courses, dirt, and asphalt, Nascar, 24hr endurance cars, etc.
Damn, who'd thought we'd lose R before Super Tex.
