the fact that Tony drove his hero's 1961 Indy 500 car is so amazing!
Two of America's greatest... Robin Miller is having a ball, even looks around at one point as if to say, "Are you guys hearing these great stories from Super Tex?" What that would have been like had Stewart & Foyt been racing in the same era. Great Stuff!
AJ, the hardest of the hard men. Out ran Jan Opperman at the fairgrounds in two 50 lap races three days before Indy because Parnelli said he couldn't beat him. Never, NEVER will there be another AJ!
RIP Jan Opperman and Robin Miller
Never
Those deep cockpits ... I do remember my dad taking us out to the stands outside the exit to turn 4, and we'd watch AJ (probably in that car a time or two) work as he'd approach the wall ... and notice how consistent he was at where and how distant he was from the wall - exactly the same nearly every lap (and he'd be CLOSE to the wall). Some laps, he worked harder than others - and as they recalled in this clip - it was fun to see that aspect of racing. I suppose in-car cameras give us a bit of that now. But I sure enjoyed being able to see them work the wheel thru the turns.
I will never forget AJ at Milwaukee with his upright Dirt car show the indy guys how it was done.
Are you talking about the 1964 race in Milwaukee? Big crash in turn 4. I was 8 years old and was there. Saw the car he won with 4 years ago at The Mile on display.
It's the best!
In Milwaukee waiting for his team to arrive, he's told his rear engine Lotus blew up at the shop.
He'd won the night before in Springfield in his dirt champ car... so without his crew, he put on asphalt tires, after a couple of Warm up laps puts the dirt car on the pole!
His crew arrives for the race, he's strong all day, finishing second to Gordo.
That's a wheelman.
@@FOH3663yep. Great moment in racing
Tony Stewart is AJ Foyt from another dimension
One day at Indy, I was summoned by a crew member to see AJ right away...uh oh. By this time, I had made a few wheels for his drivers and he was all paid up. So, I was a little nervous; after all, this IS AJ we're talking about.
Turns out, AJ just wanted me to know that I wasn't the first one to use the leveraging concept on a steering wheel at Indy since he wrapped FRICTION TAPE on the steering wheel of this exact car to aid steering and improve feedback. He concluded by saying, "You just figured out a more elegant way of doing it." On that statement, I walked up and shook his hand for I had just been paid one helluva compliment.
I also enjoyed doing Tony's wheels, too. Like AJ, I found him to be a man of few words, but also very calculated and direct...no small talk with Tony. He knew exactly what he wanted, and we wouldn't stop remolding the composite thermoplastic until it was perfect...we always got along great.
Absolutely priceless interview !
Great job Robin,
just sit back and watch history unfold in front of you !
Three Legends.
Another legend is Ryan Preece
WHOOP WHOOP WHOOP
go get em Ryan ☝️🏆💰💪🏁🤺👏👍👊🤸♀️✊️🧢👞🪠
From here in South Australia - absolutely wonderful to see and hear history and reminiscence of 50 plus years ago.
Just as good from here in Queensland! Shame the 500 doesn't have as big a profile as it deserves here.
SA boy here to
at least you all can watch it live over the internet nowadays! I remember when we didn't even get to see it live in the US! Now part of the biggest race day there is (for us in the US at least) Monaco, Charlotte and Indy!
Tears in My eyes 30 year indy guy here 80' to 2010
Two of the "GREATEST" ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yep ... and Stewart's not bad either.
dang, but aj is a piece of work, always have just loved him. from the fifties when i would watch him in my home town of allentown pa at the fairgrounds, which he said was his most unfavorite track to indy to lemans, the greatest
Oh to be there in person. Chills
Lowkey I really want to see Stewart do the 500 in the 14 or 40 in 2018.
Great video! Thank you.
Thanks for always providing great content!
2 of my heroes, yeah,awesome!!!🏁💖👀👍😁
Absolutely wonderful!!!!
4:40 is soooo true! Kevin Olson at the Chili Bowl several years ago raced with no side boards and an open faced helmet with a white t shirt and hanky over the face. Was so freaking cool! Miss those days
Let’s be real. AJ was not always the most fan friendly, cheerful guy in the pits. As a young fellow I got to see AJ and Mario in their prime. Icons. Mario was in my experience far more fan friendly. I still rooted for AJ. I sensed even as a boy that AJ was a once in a generation phenomenon. I was privileged to see one of the greatest champ car races ever, the 1967 Trenton 200. AJ came from two laps down to win after running the field down twice during 190 green flag laps. Epic.
Two of the luckiest guys in the world! Driving any Offy Roadster is on my bucket list!
A.J.Foyt Jr was the greatest race driver ever.
Love this.
Tony is the AJ of our era
ah the watson style roadsters, they dont race them anymore but for special occasions where they run vintage, though there do build custome vintage style race cars at many shops, one so see a few of is the 98 parnelli jones car, and if you see one up close it is a beauty the lines are something else look like a rocket even sitting still from the side.
This is an awesome video. The ole roadster is a beautiful racing car.
How cool to have the legendary A.J. Foyt to put his arm around you and call you by first name as he starts to tell you a story!
Aj A Man"s Man!
Smoke & SuperTex, two peas in a pod and the best guys to ever strap in a roundy-round car.
Watched him at the fairgrounds at indy many times back in the deadly days of racing. AJ, Lone Star JR, Andretti, Mark Donahue, The Bettenhausens, and many others where Iron men of the sport. Racing today should go back to there roots and have more versatile drivers.
Great video
Took place today may 10th 2017. Indianapolis speedway
RIP Robin May will never be the same without you
Wow , a roadster. Too cool.
Love AJ. Bobby and Al Unser . Mario...
Jim Hurtabes and all the others in the 1960s....Indy Race Car is the Best...📢
I like AJ..real old school. Field of dreams stuff
Love to see a boy and his hero!
Fifty one Indy 500s under my belt, ... my two best Foyt memories include him in USAC Stocks on dirt at the big Indy Fairgrounds mile oval.
Secondly, AJ retiring unexpectedly on Pole Day '93 ... sitting in the stands... as track anouncers describe what's transpiring... AJ in tears on the mammoth PA system... it was magical.
Robby Gordon, his young hotshot team-mate had an incident... AJ felt he'd not focused enough on helping Gordon adapt to the track, including treacherous turn one.
- Daytona 500 winner
- 24 Hours of Le Mans winner
- 4x Indy 500 wins
- 35 consecutive Indy 500 starts spanning the '50's to the '90's!
Foyt was a standout amoung the Titans of the sport, throughout the pinnacle of the sport.
... Parnelli Jones, Dan Gurney, Mario Andretti, Bobby and Al Unser, McClusky, Johncock, Rutherford, Bettenhausen.
All this in midgets, sprints, dirt, asphalt, USAC Stocks on road courses, dirt, and asphalt, Nascar, 24hr endurance cars, etc.
Damn, who'd thought we'd lose R before Super Tex.
GREAAAAAAAAT!
American icons right there.
NM, I see that AJ has had some medical problems lately.
He is a true legend of racing.
I wonder when this meeting took place?
AJ looks great - I really thought he was on his way out - great to see him back in seemingly good health
Yeah he looks better than he has in years, thankfully.
Tony, please consider Oswego and a super! That would be awesome! 🏁
Give em hell smoke!!
Gold
A.J. Foyt Jr is the only driver to win in (front Engine and rear engine Indy cars) this record will never be broken...also 35 straight Indy Starts.
A. J. ' S 1958 Indy run what was he thinking when the big one happened on turn 3 !
The best ever
tony! get your ass back to the indy 500!
Why?
Super Tex. And smoke.
Cut down so ya can see the elbows, that's awesome
Can you imagine the concern the owner of that car feels having Stewart and his legendary temper behind the wheel of this beautiful machine.
Foyt is just as temperamental.
Race Driver's today, couldn't shine A J FOTY shoes.
Oswego Tony!!
What in the hell is with the music in the background, give it a break!
it's just from the track PA system, as it is open to all the teams moving in the garages for the month of May.
Yeah I noticed it too. At least the music that's playing is tolerable.
SMOKEY SAID WHEN CARS DIDN'T HANDLE HE HATED THE WAY A.J. WOULD SHOW UP AND WIN EVERY RACE NO MATTER WHAT KIND OF CAR HE DROVE .
How fast could a car like go ??? 110-125 ?
A.J. would run circles around "Smoke" ....its no comparison at all.....
Lol
@ 2:12 - 2:26 (after 2:27 big mouth starts to shoot his mouth off) as a very knowledgeable Road Racing fan of only 37 years old that didn't see what I STRONGLY feel were the best years ever (approx) '63-'77, A.J. sums it up PERFECTLY for me!
AJ needs to lay off the donuts 🍩 🩺
So sad car in video is not painted like a kite
Dumbest thing Tony Stewart ever did? 🤷♀️
Signing Ryan Preece not once but twice, WTF 🙈
To much politic that what sabotage all racing you had technology it’s done
I'm first
He should be behind the bars not the wheel! Nah fuck that one person that says that nonsense. Stewart is living a great life after retirement! He just gotta get behind that wheel for another Indy 500!!
Stewart is bangin alot of broads 👙💄
hey remember when Tony stewart purposefully killed that guy?
matt sieg: No because that never happened you shit-for-brains.
The idiot runs on to an active race track shaking his fist at Tony driving towards him, not to smart a move !
This is classic.
A.J.Foyt Jr was the greatest race driver ever.
